Hamlin officially wins PFWA Comeback Player of the Year

Congratulations.  To be perfectly honest, he wouldn't be my choice for that award.   My thought is that the award is for players who made a comeback that had relevance on the field of play.  Hamlin played special teams and had a few reps on defense, but his role could have been filled by any safety who was signed by a team as a fringe member of the roster.  I'm glad for him though, not just the award, but for his good health.

I don't care what anyone says.  The minute he even stepped foot on a football field after what he went through, that is amazing.  He played special teams all year that he was active, so its not like he wasn't doing anything at all.  People just love to complain about something.

You’re right. It is incredibly amazing he set foot on a field in such a short time frame.

Though maybe they should have gone for the Walter Payton Award instead…

With what he did regarding all the donations to his charity causes it was definitely worth a shout.

Should be Baker as CPOY.

It should be hard to argue the distance he “came back” relative to the distances others came back. From nearly dead on NFL field and back on NFL roster. . He was never a great DB but he came back the most. See Alex Smith

I've come around this. didn't think he deserved it in the spirit of what the award was made for, but this is a very special case. we don't need to be so rigid all the time.  the man was dead for several? minutes on national TV. I sat in my living room and cried for him and his teammates, along with millions of others. this transcends what the award is meant to be. I applaud the choice, and hope everybody can see it is something meaningful and special and not just another participation award.

he came back to life. literally. he is THE comeback player of the year

The award has traditional recognized excellence on the field, apparently no more. The NFL is so entangled in feel good, identity politics and programming that upon nomination this was fait accompli.

At its core do you think Comeback Player is anything more than a feel good award?

Thanks for sharing. The really crazy part of the list is that Chad Pennington won it TWICE in the span of three seasons! Is that even possible?

Well it was going to be who Joe Flacco but then the Texans happened.

Votes were already made prior to the playoffs beginning.

Cut him and I suspect he’s out of the league or catches on to a practice squad somewhere for a year or two and then quietly exits the league without fanfare.

Not necessarily. There are a lot of teams that could use help at the S position. He's not a starter by any means, but he's good depth and can carve out a role on STs for a lot of squads. Heck, I would bet a substantial amount that if we cut him he's on the Pittsburgh Steelers roster within a week.

He was in fact clinically dead on the field. I’m not sure what his future (career) holds, but I’m happy he’s resumed a completely normal life.

The award itself is stupid, really.

It’s a great award, in my opinion.

But its intention has never been to give it to a depth player who has literally zero impact in any game throughout the season. Like Hamlin.

Yeah, I'm happy for him, but in my opinion you have to have been somewhere to make a comeback to it.   He was a backup safety, and he came back to being a backup safety.

I guess I’m just missing something here? It’s literally in the name—“comeback player” that says to me coming back from…[whatever you choose to insert as the place you wound up], where you might not have ever come back from. Pointing out previous winners can’t account for an on-field event that’s never happened before. How many other clinically deceased players have come back to suit up for their team after a year? I’ll hang up and listen.

Yeah because of his relationship with Tomlin, he’s just not a good player

Trouble is he's IS a "good" player. But that's likely his ceiling. Good.

Fans have 2 categories for players. They are either awesome or trash. A roster needs role players and Hamlin is a good role player. I don't think he would ever be a Pro Bowl level talent but he is good enough to be on a roster.

Look at it like this. There are 32 teams and I would estimate in total teams average 4 safeties per team. That's 128 players at the position league wide. There aren't 128 safeties better then Hamlin.

We’re all behind Damar and always will be. What he went through last January was some scary stuff. I am glad he recovered and is healthy. Life is so much more than just about football and I am happy he deservedly won this award.

With saying that it is now time to move on from him as a player for the Buffalo Bills.

I fully expected this award to go to him, but Flacco really deserved it.

I mean I think Damar winning is a bit silly (he did almost die and played in the nfl again which is pretty amazing) but Flacco played in what 5 games and throw a ton of ints.

if anyone should have gotten it, it should have been Baker.

Great human story that he came back. But, like many, I don't think he should win this award for riding the pine as a backup.

Classy comments from Flacco but I'd rather give it to him for actually helping his team win. Whatever. It's political and it's over.

You make a solid point on Baker, and since I’ve seen all of his games living in Tampa, he had a tremendous year.  People down here in Tampa really love what he accomplished.

It’s wild Cleveland could have just kept him and been in great shape

I get how people feel about Hamlin over someone like Lamar or Baker..I get it..but has anyone else died during a game and played snaps the next season? He literally came back from the dead and resumed his career.

Hamlin wins fake punt of the year

Talk about a botched play starting with not running it to the wide side of the field or if you like calling it at all, but I digress, good for Damar!
