Do you want Daboll to leave for a HC job?

Is your mind made up on what you want to have happen with Daboll or will it all depend on tonight (and potentially the rest of the playoff run)? He’s been here 4 years and the entirety of Allen’s career thus far so it seems like his body of work would provide the sample size as a fan to determine whether you want him to stay or go. But does it more depend on what happens now?

 

he’s not a shoe in for one of these jobs, especially if they lose tonight/the offense looks bad, and because of Flores getting thrown into the mix as another candidate. Even Jim Caldwell is now being interviewed for the Bears.

Considering that we’re probably going to lose Frazier (and maybe Dorsey with him) along with schoen has me thinking it’s in our best interests that he stays one more year.  That said, let’s see how he calls these very important games

McDermott is clueless with offense,  God no we need Dabol in the worst way. I don't trust Dorsey at all.

Dorsey might leave too. If Frazier is hired before Daboll, we could lose all 3

I believe he deserves a shot at being a HC, and I wish him well. But I will be sorry to see him go.

let me rephrase, i think Allen will continue to improve with or without Daboll, he was good for Josh early on but now with Allen beginning to enter the veteran phase of his career he knows what he gotta do to keep it going.

Daboll's redzone play calling is what drives me the most crazy. I don't get the obsession running on 2nd down in the redzone. In 2019 (if anyone remembers) he was much more creative in the redzone. Granted the bills had less talent then, but I feel like he should still be a bit more creative in the redzone

I said yes. I'd want to keep him if he could learn from his mistakes but he hasn't really shown the ability to do that. He will have a game or two where he shows improvement but will go back to head scratching calls again.

I am totally ambivalent. I don't mind Daboll. Think he is a decent coordinator. Would not be at all upset to see him back. However, if he goes I don't think it will have some major effect on the offense so if he goes I'd just check with Josh what he wants to do and if that is promote Ken Dorsey, do that.

Dorsey is a McBeane guy tho. I don't think he makes a decision until our season is over unless he for some reason gets a HC job.

We've had so many bad coordinators over the years, that I'm spectacularly thankful for Frazier and Daboll even while they both sometimes frustrate me.

 

Granted, Daboll has Allen to help him look good.  But Daboll is also working with a poor offensive line.  Yet the Bill have - again - one of the best offenses in the NFL.  I won't minimize that accomplishment.

Just curious...  When was the last time you sat down with McDermott and talked to him about modern NFL offenses?   What criteria did you use to evaluate his expertise?

This was their best year in terms of redzone touchdown %. 7th in the NFL at 62.34%. 

 

I agree it hasn't always felt like that.

Here’s the thing Daboll is a disciple of the Patriots Chris Simms has even called our offense Patriots light do to it’s concepts…

finding old Hoodie assistants to run a similar offense isn’t hard but I’m of the belief for Josh’s long term health to institute a shannahan like zone blocking scheme and use Josh’s play action skills more often

I disagree totally. I want Josh in a scheme that gives him maximum freedom and doesn't manufacture lots of half field reads which is what that Shanny scheme does.

Oh I disagree I think he would excel in such an offense even Kyle Shannahan himself has said when they drafted Trey Lance they thought they where getting Allen which as we’ve seen isn’t easy to replicate

After the season…..Daboll might get hired away after Frazier get hired as HC.  He might have a decision to make

I’m just curious to to see what Ken Dorsey brings. Offense stays the same, but you put the play calling in the hands of actual QB who played at the highest level in college and many years in the nfl.  People need to remember Daboll wasn’t an OC in the nfl until he came here. Sure he called plays at Alabama. But I’m curious to see what Dorsey can do and what he will add to make it his offense…..

We didn't run a predominate spread/RPO based offense in 2019. I think that plus our lack of physical talent inside on the OL has affected the play calling in the red zone.

I stand corrected…. Looks like all were 1 year stints. Doesn’t look like he had a lot of success. I still like Dorsey in that roll and even Chad Hall. I think Hall is a future sleeper in this league.

Absolutely agree. But also he needs to design game plans and call plays that maximize the talent and take advantage of mismatches

After the first Pats game I was ready to show him the door.

 

But then he did something I've not seen from him before- he adjusted and started the run game.

 

I still think he's "too cute" sometimes and doesn't need to be. Josh will make plays.

 

Last year I was terrified he'd leave but right now I'd be like "ok, who's next?" The idea of him going and taking dorsey and Frazier leaving at the same time tho... Too much for one off-season.

I do, however my main focus isn't because I believe he's terrible.

 

First off, I would like to see him get an opportunity. If Dave Culley earned one...then so has Daboll IMO. While I believe that Daboll falls into the same category of Nate Hackett and Leftwich (OCs that look way better because they work with a top NFL QB) he is very well liked by his players and could do some good things in the right situation.

 

Second, I'm not sure how much more Josh can learn from him. Maybe a new OC has lessons that Daboll does not have and it would add more to Allen's growth and the growth of others in the offense.

I'm on the fence. On one hand, he deserves some credit for helping Josh develop. On the other hand, his play calling is somewhat questionable, so it may be time for a fresh perspective. I'm leaning towards the latter, but I'll accept either outcome.

Love his offense sometimes hate his play calling.  If the same offense stays with a new play caller I wouldn't be upset.

But it won't be a disaster. With a good choice for replacement it shouldn't hurt too badly.

I'd prefer to keep the coaching staff continuity, but I've already accepted that we're likely to lose both coordinators.  It doesn't concern me at all, because I trust McDermott/Beane to replace them with capable coaches.

Daboll is a very, very good OC.  I’d like him to stay, but he’ll probably get an opportunity to move on and get a HC job this off-season.  Also it’s getting to be a better time for him to do so in his personal life.  (Nothing nefarious on the personal side.)
