That being said, the lack of a dynamic edge athlete is preventing this defense from making the jump from good to elite. Too many TD's in the RZ. Get a freak athlete coming off the edge and I believe that works itself out. Does anyone have a better idea as to how to fix the awful RZ defense? Love to hear it. Resigning Lorax would not prevent us from doing htis....he makes virtually peanuts

I have no problem resigning Lorax to a one year deal, but they cannot neglect the issue. The best way to come up with big stops in short areas is to have dynamic athletes with the ability to contain screens, etc. That is my solution to fixing the RZ issues and I've yet to hear another. Agreed. We're a unique defense given that we're a) good and b) don't really have a game changer. Tre is fantastic and Edmunds might develop into one someday, but presently we don't have one. I'd advocate to extend him again at a team friendly price. He makes ~3M per right now, but I don't want to offer him ~5M as some suggest.

Edit: The more I think about it, the more I lean towards Edmunds being that guy on the OUTSIDE. If he continues to struggle with recognition, he could thrive in a role that requires less diagnosis and more raw talent. Middle linebackers are not nearly as valuable as they once were. Meazy26
Based on his production the last few years, he’s been extremely underpaid. Considering we have plenty of cap space ( probably won’t even spend half of it), I’d give him 6+ mil for next year based on appreciation alone. He’s earned his damn check. MrEpsYtown
Love Lorax and want to resign him...but you know who the perfect replacement is? Josh Allen from Kentucky. Can play off the ball, on the ball, can line up as a defensive end in nickel defense. He's the perfect hybrid player for his defense. Not the athlete that Shaq Thompson was coming out, but he's a much better football player. First Josh Allen is working out. Might as well get the other one. Heck let's sign the backup center Josh Allen, formerly of the Bucs to corner the market on Josh Allens.

BillsFan4
Yes, 100% he should be back in some role on this defense next year. I cannot see any reason why he shouldn’t and lots of reasons why he should... - he has played damn good this year - Bills have boatloads of cap space. More than they are going to use next season - he is one of the main leaders in the locker room. He has fully bought in and embraced this new regime’s philosophy. Plus he’s really embraced his role as a leader and taken a number of thr younger players under his wing. - he’s embraced the buffalo community and does a lot of charity work off the field - he’s a model NFL veteran that does everything the right way (exercise, diet, film study etc) and is a great example for all the young guys that are already in buffalo and the ones coming from our (at least) 10 picks in this draft. He also just recently said that that he wants to retire in Buffalo. With the amount of cap space buffalo has I don’t see any reason they wouldn’t offer him a deal. They may possibly want to go year to year with him (if he’s willing), but I’d be shocked if the Bills didn’t offer him a contract.

HalftimeAdjustment
There is a very good chance he will be OK with a 1 year deal with enough of it baked in as a signing bonus. And of course the remainder would be guaranteed as of week 1. So he has little to lose unless he is really sure he will play more than 1 more year. T master
DUH !! Sorry ? But the guy said he wants to retire a Buffalo Bill if that isn't a direct line message toMcBean i don't know what is . This guy & Kyle are the heart of the D & both should be at the very least be given a good offer to come back & be in the rotation if they don't feel they can still play a lot of snaps !! Plus Lorax gave the Bills one heck of a contract because he wanted to stay here given what he did the year prior to them re upping him so that in it self i think he needs to be rewarded with another decent contract to show the new rookies how a true vet does it !! boyst
Yes, and I'd be sneaky with the pay though we have cap room. I don't know if we will spent all $90mm in cap or not - but I know they can always do that 2 year structure payout on a 1 year deal that I'd be fine to do because id like to go hard at OL
BuffaloBillsGospel
You can never have too many of these team players, he is a leader in the locker room, a special teams standout and makes plenty of plays on defense, I see no reason why the Bills and Lorax wouldn't come to another 1-2 year agreement unless he's asking for an outrageous pay increase which i don't forsee at 35 years of age. HalftimeAdjustment
Since he has now stated that he is only looking to go year to year, this becomes very clean. His numbers are good and probably the most important thing for an older player, he was still playing well at the end of the season. He played in all 16 games and compared to 2017 he had better stats in most categories (sacks, Int, passes defended, tackles for loss; almost all but forced fumbles). On the other hand time catches up quicker than you expect. So... his salary in 2018 was basically $3.1M considering bonuses. What is fair for 2019? Looking at the increased cap and weighing against his increased age, I would go in around $3M. Yes there is a risk that he hits the wall but the loss in that case is not even as bad as the risk we took on Corey Coleman. We ate $3.5M in cap and a 7th rd pick on that. So, something in the $3M range, give or take a little, seems like a no-brainer??

RochesterLifer
The easiest part about this decision is his leadership and team-first focus. If his play declines (a real possibility at his age), we know he will shift to a mentor role and continue to contribute. Bring this guy back until he proves he can't do it anymore.
LSHMEAB
KW's decision to retire has really made this an easy call for Beane. I wouldn't have been opposed to re-signing both, but it would have given the FO something to think about. With the new direction of the team, do you really want to use two front 7 D roster spots on players 35+? Again, not saying I wouldn't want both back, but it would have been debatable. Everyone is focused on offense and rightfully so, but I'm really hoping they add a dynamic edge player either in FA'cy or the draft.
