RD3, Pick 96: Harrison Phillips DT - Stanford

Recommended Posts

I'm assuming someone already posted this, but he's #42 on Mayock's top 100 and #43 on Jeremiah's top 50... and just look at Jeremiah's description of him:

Phillips is a powerful defensive tackle with excellent production and a non-stop motor. He dominates against the run. He jolts blockers with a quick, explosive punch before locating the football and collecting tackles. He understands blocking schemes, routinely defeating double-teams with his quickness and awareness. His lateral range is exceptional and he never seems to tire out despite rarely coming off the field. As a pass rusher, he generates a steady push with his bull rush and flashes a quick slap/swim move. He needs to improve as a finisher. He has some ankle tightness and struggles to flatten out once he gets upfield. Phillips offers immediate value on run downs and I believe he's going to improve as a pass rusher at the next level. He reminds me ofKyle Williams coming out of LSU.

Wow, I liked the pick, but he's really killing it with his statements. What a great kid.

In fact, all three of our draft picks so far are doing everything right...I don't usually put much value on "high character" guys, but these three are impressive.

Listening to his interview with the media now on WGR. Wow. Very articulate and sounds pumped. He's mentioned guys on the team by name like Trent Murpy, said "we traded up for a franchise QB so that piece is in place", said that comparisons of himself to Kyle Williams are unfounded because he could never compare himself to a player like Kyle who will have a "special history in the game". Looking forward to Kyle taking him under his wing. The kid is knowledgeable, excited, and humble. Fantastic get if it all translates on the field.

That's awesome, it's nice to draft players who are legitimately excited to be here

"I kind of say the saying that my position is like the fire hydrant at the dog show," Phillips said. "You're the guy in the middle right there and everyone's kind of coming up and pissing on you. I was able to be a really shiny fire hydrant at the dog show I guess."

The Bills overachieved last year, heart and chemistry being a part of it.  They were the underdogs with a "Band of Brothers" feel to them.  I'm getting the feeling that character is very much at play with these draft picks thus far.  Yes, the usuals are talked about...ability, filling a hole and such...but there has been a lot of talk about how all three fit the team's chemistry.  This pick just galvanizes the suspicion.  This kid is a work horse, leaving it on the field every play.

Remember when the Sabres were "The Hardest Working Team in Hockey"?  At this rate the Bills are going to be the hardest working team in football.  Love this pick.

Beane and McDermott are building the core of this team.  Tre' White is getting a lot of company from this draft.

I know some will talk about player talent on the field being the only thing that matters, but I am "sappy" enough to say the other things matter too.

Football is a game and both the players and the fans should have fun and feel good about watching it.

Keep it Beane, another big day tomorrow!

Great pick!

love it. He’s got such great hands. A D-Line rotation with Hughes-Lotulelei-Williams-Murphy plus Lawson-Washington-Phillips-Yarbrough behind them is really really great d-line depth.

Also, member of the “40-40 club”.

40 bench reps

40 on the wonderlick

that sounds like one big lollipop....   40 licks must be a lot !

Beat me to it. Love this kid

At one point, Phillips was thought of as a potential first or second round pick. He doesn't have the same measureable as other defensive tackles in this draft, but if there's one thing about this kid, he'll embrace the grunt work.

"I kind of say the saying that my position is like the fire hydrant at the dog show," Phillips said at the Senior Bowl. "You're the guy in the middle right there and everyone's kind of coming up and pissing on you. I was able to be a really shiny fire hydrant at the dog show I guess. Thank the linebackers for sometimes pulling off those double teams on me. I appreciate the coaching staff not seeing me as some 340-pound guy who can't move and understanding my abilities, understanding I'm more athletic than the typical nose, faster than the typical nose, knowing my strength. When a play needed to be made and we would call a timeout, coach would say, 'Hey, go win. Go do what you have to do and get us the ball.'"

Just watched his highlight film. His lateral movement, even while being blocked or doubled is exceptional. With Edmunds behind him to clean up, we shouldn't be giving up 200+ on the ground anymore.

I’ll jump to Kelsay’s defense - he was high motor and a much better player than he got credit for.

Kelsay was a good role player, a good 3rd DE rotational type player. The hate from fans seems to stem from the fact that he got overpaid by the Bills twice for some reason. The Bills weren't getting zero production out of him but rather they weren't getting anywhere close to the production needed considering his salary.

First knock on the pick: he apparently is into golden showers.

Prisco gave the choice an A+ and had high praise for the team. Here is what Prisco wrote following the pick:

This is a steal. This kid has first-round talent. Bills killing it.

From espn:

Pre-Draft Analysis

Phillips is a highly disruptive run defender with elite intangibles who led the nation in tackles for a defensive lineman with 102. He grades out as a starting defensive lineman if he's used as a three-technique, 4-3 nose tackle or 3-4 defensive end (or some combination).

Post-Draft Analysis

The Bills signed Star Lotulelei to start inside next to Adolphus Washington, and Kyle Williams signed a one-year deal. That said, Harrison is the 43rd-ranked player on our board, making him an outstanding value pick. -- Steve Muench

Petey has given us 3 A+ grades so far. He has never been so high on the Bills.

Thought he gave Tremaine a B+?

Still, we're doing amazing in this draft.

Potentially 3 starters for a very long time with the Bills.

Oh I just double checked and you're right.

After the 1st rnd draft they had each of the NFL network hosts name a team that had the best round, Casserly picked the Bills. The Allen pick generated a wide difference of opinions, but Casserly was a scout with the Skins and then a GM for 16 years and has 3 SB rings so I will take his over the former players and sports personalities.

You sure you aren't taking his opinion simply b/c he likes the guy your team just drafted?

I figured that was implied, that said, I respect the opinion of an actual successful scout and gm more than some talking head TV guy.

Just saw that Phillips did more bench reps than anyone at the combine, 42. I saw him play a lot in college and once in person and he was always hard to handle. Led the nation in tackles by DT last year with over 100. So ya, I am pretty happy with this pick.

Me three. Ever since the very first time I read about him, he stood out as the most obvious Sean McDermott player that will ever exist.

Wrestling champion, member of the 40-40 club, off-the-charts intangibles, high motor, team captain...he may be more McDermott-y than McDermott! If they could just draft 7 Harrison Phillipses every year, I'm pretty sure they would. If you want to know what "Bills DNA" looks like, just check out this dude.

And now to hear that the first time he ever met McDermott, coach immediately tried a wrestling move on him! Pure gold. Makes me like coach even more.

Outstanding pick and just like Mayock said: "Kyle Williams Jr". Love, love, love it.

You forgot to mention that he's also a devout christian

Right, that and  42 bench reps, 3 time state wrestling champ, 40 Wonderlic Stanford grad; I think other teams were too intimidated . McD the former wrestler must be lovin it.   http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2769386-harrison-phillips-nfl-draft-2018-scouting-report-for-buffalo-bills-pick     check out the NFL comparison. He led Stanford in tackles from the nose tackle position.:pirate:
