Draft a QB or pay for one?

Pay a QB or draft a QB?

  1. 1. Which route do you take?

    • Pay premium dollar for an FA QB and keep the picks
    • Use those picks and potentially trade up for a top prospect QB?

If we currently have the space...I wouldnt mind paying top dollar for a quality QB.

It allows us to use our stockpiled draft picks on players. If you could have an Eli Manning/Kirk Cousins for 3 years at a premium and keep our high picks (Rookie wages to keep cap in good shape.)

Or do you give up your draft for a QB and look for FA finds?

What say you

I really want Mayfield but don’t want to trade up to get him. So I’d be ok with getting an Eli Manning, Alex Smith type vet and keeping our picks and hopefully getting Mayfield. But if he falls is the question. Even still, they probably have a QB in mind that would be there where they draft. Do that if you like a guy there. If not, use the picks on getting the O and D Lines right. Another WR. And some nfl caliber LBs. Have Eli or Smith for 1-2 years and groom your rookie. If one starts to decline or gets hurt, it’s time for the Rook.

Both wasn't an option, but thats the route i would go.  Bring in a Bradford, McCown, Keenum, Smith (probably not a Cousins, that pricetags very high) - and then draft a guy.

Philly basically already did this with bradford, because you have to sign a free agent first since the draft is so much later.  They ended up recouping a 1st for Bradford, which I don't think we would be able to do - but it'd be a much better QB room than we've had in a very long time.

what is brees record over the last few years? need a team around the guy to succeed. if we can get him for nothing or very little. then surround with a draft class like last year we will be on our way to long success

I don’t believe that Eli has 3 years left in him ,

I like Kirk Cousins but let me ask you this - if you had to pick the top 10 QB’s would he make that list ?  What we do know is that who ever will consider to sign him will have to make him the highest paid QB in the league ,

i think drafting a QB is the way to go ,

now are we willing to move up and give up the farm for a top 5 pick ? Or maybe we can still get one in the middle of the first round ,

i mean trading for his rights.  he's a ufa but  if they tag him we'd have to trade for him i believe. i'd absolutely make a move for him.  the problem we have is that the draft is after free agency so we need to sign a qb in free agency if we aren't able to get a guy for next year in the draft. if we sign cousins we have a whole bunch of picks to fill out the roster

Personally, if we could land Cousins, I'd sign him and keep the picks especially if both Buffalo and Kansas City end up with picks in the lower half of the 1st round.  The cost of moving up would be steep and personally I would rather have a QB (I consider Cousins a franchise QB watching him here in VA all the time) and 4 (4 picks in the 1st 2 rounds) more players.

Given Buffalo's current picks, they could package their 2 -1sts and 2 2nds to move up (using the trade value chart) to the 3rd pick w/SF, and their would likely be 2 QB's off the board already, so they would be getting their 3rd choice likely...

IMO: Cousins + 4 picks in the top 64 > 3rd Choice of QB in draft.

or

Cousins + 4 picks in the top 64 > 4/5/6th QB choice at 18 and 3 more picks in the top 64 or any other combination or moving up and losing picks.

However, I dont see us landing Cousins so....

Yeah, both would have been my vote too.

Trade for the better draft pick to get one. Yes, it would be wonderful to have all our picks to fill holes immediately. However, the Rams and Eagles both show that if you have a little patience, you can get your guy by seemingly trading too much, and still build your pieces and contend very quickly. 2 examples slapping us in the face head to head this past week. It's a no brainer. Couple that with Beane's quote about the first thing a GM needs to do is get his QB to build upon, and it's not a mystery.

We should not throw a rookie QB to the wolves as a day1 starter IMO and break him if we go this route. If not Tyrod, who is the best bridge QB for a year that the rookie can learn or develop behind?

Tyrod

McCarron

Bradford

Bridgewater

Cutler

Smith

other?

I'd be tempted to go Bradford personally if the dude could stay healthy. Just not sure that is possible?

I would support adding a legit franchise QB. Unfortunately, your 2 examples aren't. Eli is a declining mediocrity and Cousins is a "never will be" tease like Cutler.

Tyrod will want to get out of here as fast as he can.

Bradford worries me with injuries, but he's very good when healthy. I'd take a chance if he'd come here.

AJ McCarron would be interesting. I have always been a fan and think he'd be a decent stop gap guy.

No thanks on Teddy. I am not sold he'll ever fully recover...and even if he did I do not think he was ever a top level guy.

Cutler will retire.

Alex Smith / Kirk Cousins for me. Draft your replacement to sit on the bench and LEARN for at least 1 year.

I'm all for whatever would work. It is my opinion that we need to be able to develop our own QB. I'm open minded and will give the benefit of the doubt until it doesn't work.

I want this organization to learn how to draft and develop a QB. I'm skeptical of taking some one else's cast off and making it a success. In the end I am neutral and just say do whatever it takes.

If you spend the draft picks to get one of the top QB's you had better have someone who can develop him into an elite franchise QB and also upgrade the line to protect him.

Jim Kelly had Ted Marchibroda who taught him the playbook and also taught him to call all his own plays. Over the years the Bills haven't had either the QB or a man to develop him properly. Much less a decent Oline to help them develop as JP was always seeing/hearing phantom sackers after getting pounded on so often and Trent was concussed out of the NFL.

Then considering this team passed on Deshawn Watson, I'm not so sure they can even properly evaluate a college QB as to who to select.

It's for certain this team needs more than a game manager like Tyrod or even a more advanced version much like Alex Smith. Jim Kelly was a gunslinger but he also had a very solid team around him, line, receivers, coaches. He also had Thurman Thomas to hand the ball off to who was 60-70% of the offense. Be nice to see this team finally find the next Kelly. They already have the RB in Shady.

Draft.

Real legit QBs almost never change teams, so if you go FA you get a midrange starter at best, but pay him like the best ever (literally, any decent qb hits the market will be highest paid ever).

Draft a guy, he may bust... But will be cheap, and there is a chance at him being a true "franchise QB", meaning an elite, 10 year starter that is capable of getting you a ring.

DRAFT by a mile.

If you hit on a QB drafted you get a nice period where they are paid far below market value which you can use to build quickly a strong roster. Second a young QB is far more moldable then a guy who has seasoning already.

I think this is what will happen -- and what should happen.  I'd like to have a shot at Rosen or Darnold, but I think we'll be aiming for third choice.

Mayfield, Jackson, Allen, Rudolph is my current order 3 - 6.  I see more Brees than Manziel in Mayfield, despite the immaturity which I think he'll grow out of.

These are estimates.

Right now, looking at standings our 1st from KC is 16 (1000pts),  our pick is 20 (850pts).  Our second round picks will be worth about 420 and 380.  The list of teams ahead of us:

1. (3000pts)  Browns: QB is very likely (new GM, Kizer underwhelming)

2.  (2600pts) Giants: QB is very likely

3.  (2200pts) 49ers: QB is possible (but less likely due to Jimmy)

5.  (1700pts) Broncos: QB is possible (no sign they are sold on Lynch)

9.  (1350pts) Redskins: QB is necessary if they lose Cousins

10.  (1300) Jets: quite probable

11.  (1250) Bengals: possible

A move up to 3rd or 4th pick would require both firsts, and a second.  and that gets you the third QB off the board.  Is anyone here sold on the idea that the third selected QB in the draft is worth 2 first round picks and 1 or 2 second round picks?  Is one first and one second round pick worth trading for the 4th choice of QB in the draft?

2017: 3rd qb: Mahomes, 4th QB: kizer

2016: 3rd qb: Paxton Lynch, 4th: Connor Cook

2015: 3rd qb: Bryce Petty, 4th: Garret Grayson

And yes, I know there are better QBs in the 2017, 16, 15 drafts than those listed above, but they were taken later and wouldn't need to be acquired by a trade-up.

I'm not sure selling the farm for 3rd choice is the way to go.

He's not as good as Brees, never was.

I'd like to put it out there as "crazy talk" that the best answer might be....do both!

I thought the Eagles were pretty nuts when they traded for Sam Bradford while they had Nick Foles.  I thought StL got the better end of that swap.

I thought they were even nuttier when, having traded for Sam Bradford, they signed him to an extension - THEN traded up for Wentz.

But how do they look now?  They got a 1st and 4th round pick for Bradford.  Wentz has been playing well.  And they were able to resign Foles as a capable backup.
