Leslie Frazier "taking a year off from coaching" per Bills PR

Frazier is a class act of a person.  Good defensive mind.  Consistently had top flight defenses in the regular season.

However, we are no longer a regular season accomplishment team.. It's all about the Playoffs, and in the Playoffs his defense has been a massive letdown.

It was time to part ways and thank him for his service to this team and applaud the ambassador he was for the Buffalo Bills.

celebrating a good guy not doing the thing he loves to do (and not knowing the reason) seems like very bad mojo.

Top ten don’t cut it and the job wasn’t getting done. I don’t think anyone is wishing him ill, just glad he can find his bliss with another organization.   I’m one of his biggest detractors but believe he’s a good guy.  Just not a gods enough coach and he cost us big too many times.

WHOA. Who gives up a DC job in the NFL to take some time off? It smells of trouble of some sort. Not a decision I would expect unless it was an issue more important than football.

Well Now our team Does need to hire someone new. Im surprised personally. I hope all works out okay with whatever caused this decision.

What was Bills average last 3 post seasons again?

You are deflecting.  The fact is that very few defenses look great throughout the playoffs consistently.  I certainly hope the Bills improve their defense and perform better next post season.  I am simply stating that you can pick apart almost any defense when they are playing the best teams in the playoffs.

I bet you’re a conspiracy guy aren’t you?

Reid’s actions in front of the owners were documented by Peter King.  He’s one of the most respected reporters in the game. Kim’s internal memo is widely available. Beane himself admitted what I said about Azaria during his press conference about it. Not exactly conspiracy theory stuff…hahaha

Answer these questions below:

1) Does this move sound like that of Super Bowl contending team?

2) Are the Chiefs and Bengals concerned about this move or are they laughing?

He will be 64 in a month.  It isn't like some 30 year old guy just walked away from a job.

Frazier stubbornly stuck to his plans.  He showed no ability or desire to adapt.  When the plan worked it resulted in elite play.  13-3.  When the scheme was figured out or simply outplayed they got wrecked as he just refused to adjust.  13 seconds.  Bengals game, when he got torched for almost two full drives and didn't change a thing for the playoff game.

He's a great DC, who can gameplan well and get the most out of his talent.  However, his critical fault is being unable to adjust if his scheme is overcome.  In a playoff system where one loss eliminates you, we're going to get tripped up somewhere each time, be it a collapse like 13 seconds, or a beatdown like the Bengals game.

We will miss him more than we we think.  He’s kind of like Edmunds to me.  Better than his detractors think.  Probably not as good as his proponents believe.  Overall he did a really good job.

But, philosophically, it probably was time for a change, or at least for a fresh set of eyes.

So that doesn’t make a lot of sense if consistently good defenses are not consistently good through the playoffs, then why are we bitching about our defense which did just that?

Anyway, it’s done let’s just see what they do next

I don’t think anyone expects the bills defence to be great against Great QBs.

But just get SOME stops

Cincis defence over the last two years in the playoffs is a prime example in my opinion

Yeah but some get picked apart much worse than others...and Bills defense has been one of the worst in the playoffs the last 2 or 3 years. I think you can agree with that much I would think

I hated the Bengals game.  I thought we were in trouble when I saw the inactives and Benford on the list.  Not enough corners dressed and headed for too much zone.   First play Burrow looked at Edmunds (over Chase, I believe) and threw right at him.   Easy pitch and catch, just like the rest of the day.

Definitely a strange way to part ways with your DC but it fits with how dysfunctional this management team is within the Bills. I guess they wanted to put a little time between the end of the season and this move so as not to embarrass Frazier so hopefully they have already had someone lined up to be the DC for some time.

This team is too funny. Trying to be cute. Love how they word this nonesense. ‘Taking a year off’ rather than firing him which they should’ve right after the Bengals game. Happy his gone and hopefully we get a real DC to replace him.

“Classy” and “likable” mean nothing in sports if the job isn’t getting done. It’s a cutthroat industry, all that matters is results. If Frazier was a total d*ck, but called a defense that played above the talent he had on the field. No one would care.

McD has now parted ways with both of his initial coordinators. Our HC is classy and likable as well, but if the Bills don’t show progress, guess who’s next on the chopping block?

I mean, it did.

A dysfunctional management team? This team has made the playoffs the last five years

Dysfunctional teams don’t make the playoffs every year they don’t go 13 and three

Did you forget the multiple threads after the game calling for Dorsey to be fired or that Josh needed to be better?

I don't think the conversation was like...

"Sean, I think I need a break. I'm going to take a year off and recharge the batteries."

It was more like,

"Leslie, you look tired. Why don't you take some time off. I think a year would be good."

I agree with this

It also might tell us just how much the defense really is McDermonts and how much input he really had into it

We really don’t know what goes on behind the scenes on these things there may have been points this year we’re McDermott had to step in and take it over we just don’t know

But we’re about to find out

It was the OC's first year.  The DC, not so much.  They looked terrible both sides of the ball.  But it wasn't Frazier's first playoff failure.

It's a respectable way for a long-time professional to save face as he retires (or is forced into retirement).

It is the opposite of the type of treatment Coaches received under Ralph for decades which went to put the org into a position we couldnt hire any quality coaches. Now they see this level of respect and will only help our image when it comes to attracting coaches.

Al Holcomb was Carolina's interim DC last year. He was just hired as our Sr. Defensive Assistant. My guess says McD will be more active on the D side and Holcomb will fill in the gaps and maybe call plays.

Finally, someone who read the article.

Let's be real here.  December 2020:

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/bills-leading-the-charge-for-defensive-coordinator-leslie-frazier-to-merit-strong-head-coaching-consideration/

"Buffalo could end up losing their defensive coordinator and that's fine with owner Kim Pegula"

Ditto McDermott quoted supporting this back then.  No way this goes on record if they're completely happy with the job Frazier does.  IMO Frazier is not a guy who likes to make in-game adjustments, and that's what killed him.  Too slow to recognize he needs to quickly figure out how to pressure the QB in a playoff game instead of riding it out and hoping.

I didn't even watch Bills/Bengals playoff game.  In Cinci, they were abusing our defense before Hamlin went down, but it was early and I knew Frazier wouldn't change much up for the playoff game.  Ironically, without the tragedy, we would have got our asses kicked in Cinci but stood a better chance in the playoffs.

Class act and thank-you Leslie, but we need more than you seem capable of.

this depends on who they get... If they find a way to bring a well named DC in the house then its his defense... Not McD.    Will McD have his voice in things yes! but unless its another first or second year student? EXPECT changes....

Sounds like McD is planning to run the D from what Beane said.

Yes, dysfunctional. Look how they handled the 13 seconds last year. Who took accountability? Then we have Beane whining in the year end presser about the Bengals and how bad they were to be able to get Chase, when he has repeatedly whiffed on picks. I think there has been a lack of accountability and willingness to call it like it is with this front office.
