12/1/2022 - NFL Week #13 - Bills at Pats* - Post game thread

Some random thoughts on the game:

  • I love Motor. He may not be a breakaway threat like Shady McCoy, or stiff-arm power back like Fred Ex, but he can shoot the gap like nobody's business.
  • Boy do we miss Dawkins! A hobbled Quess was actually better than a healthy Hart, but both of them literally just fell over at times.
  • Allen was utterly calm at all times, and that makes a difference. And my God that sideline TD throw to Davis was bananas!
  • Speaking of Davis, he hasn't been the #2WR we all hoped he would be. Maybe he pulls it together, and finishes the season strong like he did last year...?
  • I have developed a visceral dislike for Mac & Cheese Jones.
  • I know I'm probably just being a homer, but I didn't agree with overturning Poyer's interception. The ruling on the field should have stood.
  • The Patriots* fans booed like they were Jets fans.
  • Tre White does not yet look like his old self.
  • Nice game by Epenesa, Groot, Basham, and Shaq. Phillips got plenty of penetration, but when he did, it sure wasn't hard for Mac & Cheese to outrun him.
  • Shakir got one target (and catch). Wish we'd see more of him. Nice game by Lil' Dirty.
  • Damar Hamlin is going to get fined. Unnecessary roughness was the right call. I love his intensity, but no Bill wants to get a reputation for being a dirty player. He needs to learn from that.
  • I wonder about the Pats* locker room. They looked almost disinterested at times, and you don't see a lot of chemistry-- like they barely know each other. Or like they lack leadership (which I think they do).
  • Great play calling, and scheme by Dorsey. Considering how easily Uche consistently ran around Quess, or Hart, it's impressive how efficient the offense was.
  • No one should be complaining about Edmunds, IMO. His return to the field improves this defense.
  • As important as Dawkins obviously is to the O-line, the same can be said for Mitch Morse, IMO. They are better with him out there. Motor especially must love him.

What do you expect from an ex Chiefs player.

I just wish Josh could have been a dick to him in the postgame if he knew all the crap Gonzalez was talking about the Bills before and after Allen came out. But I know Josh is way too classy for that anyways.

Agree on most of your thoughts. Not sure about play calling, it looked dis-interested at times too. Mostly, agreeable just a few one offs. Happy for the W.

 Go Bills!!

  • Agreed, once the ball in his hands. His inability to catch is a problem, however.
  • Boy do we miss Dawkins! A hobbled Quess was actually better than a healthy Hart, but both of them literally just fell over at times.
  • What about Justin Murray? He was the temporary replacement at LT, I thought? Wasn't Hart just doing his 6th OL/TE thing?
  • Allen was utterly calm at all times, and that makes a difference. And my God that sideline TD throw to Davis was bananas!
  • Speaking of Davis, he hasn't been the #2WR we all hoped he would be. Maybe he pulls it together, and finishes the season strong like he did last year...?

  • I love telling people to do a Google image search for "Mac Jones ankle injury." What a wimp.
  • I know I'm probably just being a homer, but I didn't agree with overturning Poyer's interception. The ruling on the field should have stood.
  • The Patriots* fans booed like they were Jets fans.
  • Tre White does not yet look like his old self.
  • White was never a violent tackler, but I did see some promising coverage reps out of him. Once or twice he read the play and drifted off his assigned responsibility to show up on another route; good to see.
  • Nice game by Epenesa, Groot, Basham, and Shaq. Phillips got plenty of penetration, but when he did, it sure wasn't hard for Mac & Cheese to outrun him.
  • Those boys did a great job of beating their blockers, only to mostly be out of control and unable to bring down that lame excuse for a QB. Gotta break down and corral him.

  • THIS is the perfect example of why a run game matters.
  • No one should be complaining about Edmunds, IMO. His return to the field improves this defense.

I'm not just saying that....

He genuinely seems like he is above everything and everyone.

No doubt.  MJD will be lucky to have a job next year.

Its always the the good but not great players that are tools

MeShawn

MJD

Bart Scott

James Jones

i guess Steve Smith would be considered great, but he’s often out of line imo.

Yes it was… Boring is good when you control the game … Championship level teams take care of business on the road against average ( at best) teams  do this …

Not used to seeing it from our guys..

Maybe … just maybe ..they have come out the other side after an ordinary month and can now get something cooking…

Davis has been a little inconsistent this year in his new role, but 650 yards on pace for 942 yards and 8-9 TDs is not exactly terrible for a #2. Not sure what people are expecting.

1. Von who?  I kid.

2. That drive of 94 yards won the game for Buffalo

3. There was evidence of a run game tonight.
4. Shame that TD bomb to Diggs was called back.
5. Two more significant injuries.  I think.  Knox and maybe Phillips.
6. Cook’s game is coming around.
7. Dink and Dunk won the night.
8. I’m in the Hamlin was wrongly accused camp.
9. A rushing TD.  Yeah.
10. 3-0 in Foxboro and 3-0 on Thursday night.

Don't know about Phillips, but Knox did come back in the game.

Him not to drop half the passes thrown at him.

I'm reading the comments from Pats fans in response to a Boston Globe article that basically says the Pats suck, they didn't fix anything that the playoff shellacking last year revealed, and that the lousy Pats teams from previous years are now once again on display.  My favorite comment from one of the Pat fans:

"Yes, that last drive was terrible. Once they got to the red zone, it felt like they had at least a ten shots at scoring. The Bills and refs were essentially saying, "Here, let's try that again." Woeful."

With about 5 minutes to go, the Pats needed three scores to win, and they had a 3rd and long.  I told my brother they should kick the FG now and then get on with the onsides kick.  Instead the Pats floundered around for three more minutes of game time, and then ... kicked a FG.  At that point even a miracle onsides kick recovery was too late to save them.  Which they didn't get anyway of course.

He doesn't. You simply don't understand what catch percentage actually means.

Overthrows, uncatchable passes and throwaways count as a target if he was the intended receiver.

Absolutely.  He does make some difficult catches but any NFL WR should make them too.  And he doesn't seem to be getting open.  On his TD catch, that would never have happened if the Pats DB hadn't decided to walk away from Davis before the play was over, and go have some Ovaltine to get warm.

Could easily been 12-0

Yeah but it could also be 8-4, or 8-3-1 if Josh doesn't hit Diggs at the end of the Detroit game.  That one was too close.  All three losses were in winnable games but you have to take the result, win or lose.

Both Singletary and Davis dropped two passes, each.  It's no wonder Josh just looks for Diggs.

Wasn't Knox in the pattern, somewhere?  Is he just not getting open?

Obviously not because you wouldn't say he drops half the balls thrown to him. Do some reading up on it. You might learn something.

No wide receiver (other than Gabe) on the Bills has below a 67% catch %.

Diggs is over 70%. Knox is near 80%. Even McKenzie is near 70%.

Gabe is in the 50’s! He is BY FAR the low man on the totem pole.

His hands are not good.

What are everyone's thoughts on the Poyer interception being overturned?  I think he had full control of the ball as he got both feet down, and then proceeded out of bounds. Then he moved the ball but never lost control of it.

If he had tossed the ball to someone after getting out of bounds, having gotten both feet down and made a football move by taking two or three steps, wouldn't that have been enough for the interception to stand?  I've seen receptions by WRs where they catch the ball in bounds, then immediately put it down or toss it to the ref.

if that play was in the end zone or just in the middle of the field, it's a catch. That was an INT

Just got home from the game.  By the time the game ended there were more Bills fans in most sections than Pats fans.  Hell by mid 3rd quarter NE fans were leaving in bunches.  The defense looked much better.   Offense looked solid.  Love the lean on the running attack from the last several weeks.

4th straight winning season (5th in 6 years).

first team to win 3 Thursday games in a season.

first team to win all 3 thanksgiving time slots (and in four years).

first team this season to get to 6 road victories (to hell with “that was a home game”).

first team to win 3 games in 12 days.

Damn, I am so proud of these guys.

Morning After Pill:

1. I actually slept last night after a evening Bills game.  That more than anything is a testament to how calm I was throughout.  And that is a direct correlary on how that game really never felt threatened.

2. Oliver and Phillips were constantly crashing the middle.

3. I didn't even know Dane Jackson was playing until late in the game.

4. That game had to shatter Mac Jone's confidence.

5. First game in four where the Bills secondary wasn't a dumpster fire.

6. The wonders of a full week of practice.

7. Stevens is a beast.  Had a lot of Marshawn in him the way he was moving the pile.

8. Guys stepped up in Von's absence

9. Big plays in the game:  Holding on DIggs TD, Folk crossbar doink on a kick that look great from the moment it left his foot, Poyer dropped INT, Uche strip sacking Allen and Allen's TD throw to Davis

10. Phillips SHOULD NOT chase QBs down.  He should be limited to a QB tackle box.  His value is quick bursts up the middle.  When he starts hunting QBs he seems like he gets hurt.  Love the man's hustle, but a man's got to know his limitations.
