Welcome to Cleveland! There is a pretty active backers bar on the west side. I've run into quite a few Bills fans when I have been out and about as well. 

 

Not sure where you will be located,  but Beachwood schools use the Bills logo, but their colors are brown and yellow, so that takes some getting used to.

Congrats on the new job. Grew up there and lived 40+ years in Ohio. I moved to Buffalo from Cleveland 10 years ago so my info might not be the most current, but PM me if you have questions. I’d recommend:

- The West Side Market. Bring a cooler. Lotta great food there. https://westsidemarket.org

- The Cleveland Orchestra. It is world class. Seeing them at Severance is great, but outdoors at Blossom in the summer is special. Pack a picnic and some wine and go a few hours early. Kid friendly events are done regularly too.

- Surprisingly the Cleveland Museum of Art is quite nice too.

- Little Italy. Since you’ll be working right by it, you’ll want to go find your favorite places/food. 
Lots to do on the East Side in general. Good luck.

My sister has been on the East Side of Cleveland since she went to JCU in 1995. Depending on how far east you are, you can get to the stadium in 2.5 hours. I’ve gone right from her house to games a few times. I’d leave between 7-7:30 AM and be in the parking lot between 9:30-10. It’s an easy trip.

Congrats on leaving Portland.  I was there 2 months ago and it was like I was on an episode of the Walking Dead.  Junkies on the sidewalks and in tents everywhere.

I was staying at a hotel downtown.

Portland downtown is a warzone now. Truly awful. The east side of Portland is even worse with tent cities in neighborhoods.

After 20 years in the Pacific NW, I'm heading back east. I took a job with University Hospitals in Cleveland and bought a house along the lake on the east side. Movers are coming on Sept 7 and will be driving one car with my wife and two cats 2635 miles.  Will have to listen to the Rams game on the radio probably somewhere in Montana. 

Super excited to be so close to Buffalo for this upcoming season.  Should be just under 3 hours from my house to the stadium.

I'm going to need to get used to 1pm start times again. Prime time games will be easier to watch.  Looking forward to a quick trip to Detroit for Thanksgiving game.

Thanks.  I lived there from 88-92. Love the West Side market.  Severance Hall is world class music, but I never did the outdoor event. Thanks for the idea! Museum of Art is much better than anything Portland has. 

My recruitment dinner was in Little Italy. There are a few good Italian options in Portland but nothing like Little Italy!

Agreed.  I moved from the beautiful Pacific NW (Seattle) to the Midwest (KC) but quickly regretted it.  I missed the forests, mountains, ocean, diversity, foodie culture, and more.   Moving back West (NorCal) next month.  

 

But I hope you like Cleveland better than I like Kansas City.

Just wanted to second the bolded part. The easy access to unmatched, plentiful, and diverse scenes of nature (mountains, crystal clear rivers, rain forests, coastline, high desert), culture, food and drink, coffee, high quality and legal cannabis, kind people...all make the pacific northwest a truly beautiful and special place.

Plenty will (and have, in this thread) talk(ed) smack about the homeless populations on west coast cities or various other socioeconomic problems -- and admittedly, it's been a really tough few years out here, and homelessness IS a big problem -- but I don't know many cities in the U.S. without problems of their own -- including Buffalo, Rochester, Cleveland, and all the other rust belt cities. Those places, just like the PNW, also have their virtues that balance out the less than desirable aspects of living there.

No place is perfect, but the pacific northwest is a beautiful place to live, and it gets old seeing people who haven't spent much time here (if they've even ever been here at all) sh!t on it.

Moved from Seattle to Williamsburg VA., in 2003.  Made the drive 2x.

 

My recommendation is look for a route that bypasses all the tolls in Illinois, Indiana etc.  We took I-90 E to W Montana, dropped down to Denver, I-25??, then I-70 to St Louis then I-64 to Williamsburg.  I know, you will have to bite the bullet somewhere to angle up towards Cleveland, but avoid Chicago at all coats.

 

In 2003 there was no wide spread GPS, and very spotty cell service, especially in the west prairie states.  Once you cross the continental divide, it's a very long, boring drive.  Got lost at St Louis on both drives.  Have seen the Arch from many sides and angles, but remembering the Vacation movie, kept driving for another 100 miles before looking for a hotel.

I Spent my early to mid 20s in Seattle and it's an awesome place. I still miss the fishing/boating.

University Hospitals is a top company. Congrats.  We lived in Ashtabula for many years and always enjoyed trips

to Cleveland.  Good peeps, just like in Buffalo. 

You'll have a 3 hour drive to Highmark to see the Bills.

If I knew how to change "Ethan in Portland" to "Ethan in Cleveland," I would have changed "Hondo in Seattle" to something else since I moved out of Seattle a year ago!  

 

If money wasn't an issue, my favorite cities to live in/near - in no particular order - would be Portand (OR), Seattle, San Francisco.  But after visiting 45 states thus far, and however many towns and cities, I do believe all American cities/regions have their own delights and pleasures to offer.  I hope you find happiness in Cleveland.  And if you figure out how to change your name, let me know.

This is a shame.  I used to stay down there occasionally in the early 2000’s and it was very nice.  Good food, lots of craft beers, nice vibe, etc.   You are the second person that has told me this about Portland in the past week.

Congrats on the opportunity!  I don't remember knowing an Ethan, but I was at CWRU those years also.  Just recently moved out of Willoughby after about 18 years to near Chagrin Falls and work in research out at Metro.  I'm an outdoors guy, so feel free to PM me if any questions.  

 

The strength of that area up there is steelhead fishing the Grand, Chagrin, Conneaut and their tribs.  Gorgeous shale cliff settings that are truly underappreciated and relatively unknown.  Also have a pretty solid knowledge of Lake and Geauga County parks.

The proliferation of drug addiction amongst a homeless population that already more often than not struggles with mental illness has made for some truly sad scenes in Downtown Portland the past few years. Job and home losses related to the COVID situation -- not to mention the exodus of businesses out of downtown as more and more companies shift to work-from-home models -- have only made things worse. Hard times.

I recently read this article from The Atlantic about the new, more potent, more dangerous types of drugs on the streets in the past few years, and I have no doubt that the one described therein, which is a far more potent and dangerous type of meth (hold your Walter White jokes, please) is the main drug afflicting the homeless populations of west coast cities. Truly sad and scary.
