Buffalo Bills 2021 practice squad players

HOUSE

Recommended Posts

Teams are allowed to begin signing players to practice squad contracts at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Sept. 1. That coincides with the passing of the 24-hour waiver period after the NFL's final roster cuts. NFL teams had to trim their 80-man rosters down to 53 by 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

NFL teams are allowed to carry up to six veterans on the practice squad. That means there will be plenty of recognizable names on each unit, especially some experienced quarterbacks.

Practice squad players are paid $9200 per week in 2021

Minor correction, there are two tiers of PS salaries.  Rookies and players with less than 2 accrued seasons get $9,200/week.  Which is actually pretty good money if they "stick" on the squad for 18 weeks, $165,600/yr.

Veterans with more than 2 accrued seasons get $14,000/yr which is $252,000/yr if they "stick" on the squad for 18 weeks.

If a rookie is elevated to the roster, they get $36,667 per game.  Veterans get more according to their years of service.

How many players can teams have on their practice squad?

I did a quick readthrough of this article, I'd recommend it to anyone with PS questions.

16 total players

Up to 6 veterans

4 players may be protected every week

2 players can be called up to the active roster and then revert back to the PS after the game, this is expandable to 3 players for a covid-related emergency

My guesses are

16 WR Hodges (as reported)

90 DT Bryant

62 OG Anderson

32 CB Wildgoose

38 CB McCloud

9 WR Simms

7 QB Webb

28 RB Williams

35 RB Whyte

52 LB Lee

48 LB Giles-Harris

36 SS Thomas

84 TE Becker

85 TE Morris

37 CB Griffin

56 DE Love

I'm going to guess at least some of them are going to be players that weren't on the team.

I agree.  The Bills have one of the most talented rosters in the league, so some of the guys they released won't be back on the PS because they will be signed to other teams' active rosters.  I do think, however, that the Bills would like to have their "own" guys back on the PS and that the majority of the PS will be guys they had in camp.

A few players that were cut by other teams that are interesting for the PS or active roster IMO. Obviously there are reasons why these guys aren't on a roster right now, but there could be some potential with the younger guys and some depth/talent left with the more established players:

CB Desmond Trufant (2015 Pro Bowler)

DT Mike Daniels (former Pro Bowler, started 11 games last year)

WR KhaDarel Hodge (reliable receiver and special teamer for the Browns)

CB Nickell Robey-Coleman (doesn't fit our CB prototype, but has a knack for a big play)

WR Keke Coutee (slot specialist)

S Shawn Davis (5th round pick in 2021 draft)

WR Cornell Powell (5th round pick in 2021 draft)

WR Dez Fitzpatrick (4th round pick in 2021 draft)

WR Dazz Newsome (6th round pick in 2021 draft, frequently mocked to the Bills)

Also a minor clarification:
The minimum salary for a rookie this year is $660,000, so if a rookie is on the active roster for a week, he will receive a check worth $36,667. A veteran minimum, however will be based on his years in the league and the amount is progressively more depending on service.

I think both Fromm and Webb make the Bills PS.  I also have a hard time thinking Gentry doesn't find his way on instead of Simms. LB we are a little heavy on the main roster so thinking Lee is the other one from your list left off for Fromm. I agree there will be some we want to keep that are poached for better opportunities to move onto an active roster or PS with higher call-up potential and we will poach a few from other teams.  Too many options to guess. If we could get that TE from GB .. just to tick off Rodgers .. that would be sweet.

Nick McCloud was claimed by Bengals per WGR 550. No other Buffalo Bill waivers picked up.

Hey! I was right -Horrible Harry is both good enough to keep and healthy enough to play vs. Pittsburgh.👍 (Back Pat)

I was convinced of this when @Ethan in Portland proclaimed he sucks and we’ll be getting rid of him.

So, Thanks EiP!
