Micah Hyde - surprise cap casualty?

Recommended Posts

I love him, he's been a great player.

I just started thinking....is he a possibility for a cap casualty?  We save $5.1 million if we were to cut him.

I'm not suggesting we cut him but I'm thinking he could be overlooked as one of the shockers...we are going to lose a good player or two.

If cutting him means we would have more cash to resign lets say Milano...would you do it?

Not unless there's a Derwin James for us the draft, and we draft him, and he doesn't get hurt. You can't just replace Hyde with who we have or a guy off the street. If Ben Retires, maybe you can get Fitzpatrick.

It's a fair question. This year it looked suspiciously like age was beginning to be a factor.

Shockingly he's only 30 which is quite young for a lot of safeties. He just kinda plays like an old man.

Hard decisions will be made and before we dismiss out of hand that the Bills are guaranteed to keep Hyde because of what he’s meant to the team or the difficulty in locating his replacement. However, this is the same staff that unearthed Hyde - meaning if they found him, they can find others.

If the Bills decide to bring him back, let’s not presume it’s due to being unable to find and recruit a replacement level player.

Him and Poyer are the least of our worries as far as the secondary goes. Imagine how much better they'd be with a more formidable front 7 and pass rush.

agree. I can’t tell you the sense of calm I have with those guys locking down the back. They are reliable and fundamentally sound.

No chance.

If anything Hyde will get a contract extension at some point.

Mitch Morse & John Brown are players that are more likely to be cut.

I would expect brown to be traded rather than cut. Even if the Bills get a late 2nd early 3rd, it would be a win.  He still has value.

i think it's going to be a more interesting offseason than we may have realized.

I started thinking of this earlier today, seeing all these threads about what we're missing and why we lost.

...we're a contender now, so does Beane go out and try to get that "missing piece" that those contender teams always try to get?

i'm not sure we have few enough holes to get that one missing piece.  i think 2 or 3 very good FA signings,(not mega deals) could help in the right positions.  at the end of the day, it's not a terrible problem to have that this team won 13 games and still has holes to fill.  the bills can get better.

That's what an ass kicking from the team that is in the way of a Super Bowl will do to you.  That has to be the focus of the team:

Defeating the Chiefs.

Sigh.

I'm so impatient.

No. Micah is a very good player and he’s an unofficial Captain of the defense.

Milano is good but dammit once again in a losing playoff game he’s almost making plays instead of making them.

it is annoying they do not appear to have knocked any of their high defensive picks out of the park since 27.

A 2nd for Brown?

I would take that 2nd and draft his replacement but that’s probably what the team thinking about trading for Brown does when they come to their senses..

The team is going to have to make some hard choices.

That said, if our goal is to get better, I have a general pet peeve talking about "We save $X.X million if we were to cut him".

Typically even if we draft someone or we think his backup, Jaquon Johnson, can do the job (Johnson played the end of the NE game and half the MIA game), we would want to hedge our bets with a FA.  So then we're still paying $1.6M towards Hyde, and we gotta pay whatever the FA commands on the market.

I still say Josh Norman would be a great #3 Safety.

Right, so if your goal is to save money by cutting Hyde and his $5.1M salary, worth noting that Norman's cap hit was $5.9M this year.

He remains better than average at his position according to the numbers (PFF etc.). The drop-off is likely to be steep unless they get a stud in the first round. I don't want to spend a first or second round pick on a safety. Keep him.

A starting safety at $5 million is good value. I say keep him.

Agreed. I would like them to draft a 'big nickel' at some point though. They get eaten alive by TEs every year. I really wanted Jeremy Chinn in last year's draft.

I think they run back Hyde and Poyer. I think they will draft a safety for depth and to get younger behind them but I think McD like those guys and wants them back for one more year so that he can prepare younger guys behind them. I see the following players as candidates for restructuring or cuts.

1- Vernon Butler

2- Quinton Jefferson

3- Mario Addision

4- Jerry Hughes

5- Mitch

6- John Brown

7- Lee Smith

I think Smith and either Butler or Jefferson are outright cut, that should free up about 10 million in space. The rest will be asked to restructure or be cut which depending on how much they are willing to give will result in 10-20 million in space. I really hope they set the cap at 205 million. That would give the Bills 30 million to start with and then they could free up 20-25 million with these cuts and restructurings which would give the Bills a chance to retain all or most of their key free agents.

I am not a cap specialist at all but when will we know what the cap will be set at for next year?
