Your first Bills game

Recommended Posts

1979 Opener against the Fins as a kid. We blocked a FG and ran it back for our only TD. Sunny first half and torrential downpour in the  2nd half. We lose 9-7 on a last second FG miss by Dempsey.  Painful way to lose but the next year I got to see the tear down tha goalpost Miami game and break the super long Miami losing streak. I remember the crowd noise for the last 2 minutes of that game was like we had won the Super Bowl...

Opening day 1984. I don't remember the game (21-17 loss to the Pats) as much as the experience. We drove down the night before and camped out in a field just outside the Rich Stadium parking lot, woke up and tailgated all morning. It was great, even for a 13-year old kid who couldn't drink. We were there early enough to greet the players as they arrived (marveling at the swank cars they were driving and just how big these men were), and of course we got some autographs and high fives. Then we threw the football around the parking lot, with random strangers occasionally joining in, cooked out on the grill, talked with other Bills fans, and the whole time Van Miller's voice was hovering in the air, as the pregame show blared out in unison from hundreds of different radios across the lot. It was a great day and definitely put the bug in me.

I do, however,  remember my second game clearly. Later that same year (1984), after the Bills had opened the season with 11 straight losses, they faced a very good Dallas Cowboys team, who sat atop the NFC East. We sat in a very empty upper deck. We had almost an entire section to ourselves. Scattered around were fans with paper bags on their heads (ala the unknown comic, for those who remember him) with "Bills fan" or "0-11" written on them. We knew we were in for another drubbing, but what the hell, the tailgating was still fun. And then on the first play from scrimmage, rookie RB Greg Bell rips off an 85-yard TD run. Bell would go on to have a monster day with 206 yards and 2 TDs. And somehow the defense stymied the Cowgirls, holding them to just 3 points. After 11 games, the Bills were finally victorious, beating Dallas 14-3. The few of us who were there were going mad. It was (to a much lesser extent) like when the Bills broke the playoff drought. A huge, unexpected upset. And 1-11 looked so much better than 0-12.

Not sure it was my first game but late 70s, Joe Ferguson vs Steve Grogan.  I remember all the kids were lined up the tunnel throwing snowballs at the Pats on their way outta the tunnel.  Security didn’t even try to stop us.  Different times....

Even Steve Grogan played the Bills tough!

Keep paying those taxes.  I need Medicare to keep me alive until the Bills win a Super Bowl.

Saints @ Bills 12/10/1989

Was snowing like a mofo.  I remember the Bills losing, but I forgot the score before looking it up (it was 22-19).  Only play I remember is a long pass TD from Kelly to Lofton.  He caught it at around the 4 or 5 and then slid into the end zone without being touched by the defender.

I remember they handed out little bags to everyone as they entered the gate.  In the bag was a scarf and a mini pack of Marlboro reds ?

I remember that one. Crappy day all around. Ironhead Hayward ran all over the Bills and some guy named John Fourcade picked their secondary apart.

11-15-1993 Monday Night 3 Rivers Stadium.

Steelers 23-0.

What I remember: Terrible fans in that stadium—and the Bills were throttled by an on-point Steeler D and raucous crowd. A bad game to be at as a young Bills fan, all around.

I was at that game too.  My Birthday

I thought it was in 1991 or 92 but it was actually 1993, the Bills played the Colts December 10, 1993. I remember it well because Jeff George got hit hard and the game day cover had OJ Simpson on it.

That was my second game ever.  They honored OJ and the Electric Company before the game

Bills v Chiefs

Bills won 14-9 on a sweltering afternoon. Jimmy Connors won the US Open the same day and I remember watching part of it on a small portable television in a parking lot at Rich.  I went to an earlier Bills home game in ‘80 or ‘81 but I can’t recall the date.

I think it must have been 1975, November 17 Bills lost 33-24, but I remember OJ running for a lot of yards and Denis Shaw was the QB.  I was a relatively warm fall day at the old rock pile. I would have been 11 years old.

If it was at the rock pile it was 72 or earlier.

Bills Dolphins 9/7/1980

My Dad found the one thing he and I could share together and introduced me to it the day we beat the Fins for the first time in a decade.

What I remember:

Adults, all around me, absolutely losing their minds in a way I had never witnessed in my 9 years. Instantly hooked.

      Thanks Dad!

November, 1994. Bills - Packers. Bills won couldn’t tell you the score. What really sticks out in my mind...

Some drunk fins fan started going off, talking smack, etc. He stood up on his seat yelling, and then, like mana from the sky,  a full beer can came flying down from the seats above, KO’d him, and he tumbled from his “pulpit”. Security then dragged him out with no questions about the KO. ?

Not sure if this was my first Bills game but my first major memory; Bills - Cowboys 1984

Was freezing and the Bills were up 7-3 but Dallas was driving and my dad wanted to beat the traffic out of the stadium and he assumed it was a loss anyway.  Whilst navigating through the parking lot he turn on the radio just in time to hear the bills had just scored to go up 14-3 and that would eventually lead to our first win of the season in week 12; he started pounding his fists on the steering wheel angrily saying "we missed the win, we missed the win...".

I've lived in the buffalo area from 1977 and had been a fan since then, my father was big into football so it's possible i'd been to a game earlier (i've seen pictures of myself and my dad being at Raiders games when we lived in NorCal when i was 6.

I was at that game as a young lad. It was the only game that year where I remember there being lots of people and most of them were Dallas fans. It was great.

Don't remember the year but my first home game was a preseason tilt vs. Green Bay in the mid 70s.  It was at Rich so had to be '73 or later.

My first regular season home game was opening day '79 vs. the Fish, when Dempsey missed a game-winner, but I was lucky enough to be back at the stadium three weeks later to see the Jerry Butler explosion against the Jets.

I remember that day. I was fishing in Ellicott Creek and my Mom came to pick me up. I turned on the radio when I got in the car and they had won....which was a shock.

1998: Patriots at Bills

Bills won 13-10

At the height of Flutie Mania. I was 12 years old. We went for my Uncle's birthday. Kelly retired 2 years earlier and I just remember being happy to finally see Thurman Thomas and Andre Reed play

Was that the game half the toilets went out in the stadium and everyone was just leaking on the walls along the concourses?

I know that was the game we had to keep our keg in the car, with the heat on so it wouldn’t freeze- true story!
