Your All-Time Fav/Memorable Bills Plays

Recommended Posts

It's the off-season, and relatively dead off-season right now at that, with the draft still a couple weeks away and FA basically done as far as the "splashes" go. So to help pass the time in a more productive manner than dropping a useless mock draft your way, I wanted to see what specific plays in our franchise history have resonated/stuck with you--either that you watched happen, or discovered in the archives...and can be either good or bad (hopefully everyone has at least one good one to offer up though?)

Here's a few for the "good" column, in no particular order of importance:

(1) Jim Kelly's QB sneak & end zone dive for the win, 1989 at the Fish with time expiring

(2) Jim Kelly's TD to Lofton after recovering a fumbled shotgun snap, capping a perfect 6/6 opening drive against the Raiders, 1990 AFC Championship

(3) Christie boots it through in OT to complete the greatest comeback of all time, 1993

(4) Don Beebe reversing almost the entire field to chase down & strip Leon Lett of the ball and save a TD in SB XXVII

(5) "The Leap" heard 'round the world, Josh Allen 2018

I remember a play in the comeback game where Beebe caught a TD, but had been pushed out of bounds on the play and it wasn't called.

Sometimes we get to have a break fall our way too--we've had plenty that haven't, so I'll call it even on that one, Houston! :nana:

Exactly what I'm talking about--we all have plays that don't necessarily make the Bleacher Report top 10 of all time or whatever, but they stick out in our memories for some reason. Thanks for that one.

Andre Reed's 4th and 5 catch over the middle in the comeback game, followed by the noise of the crowd when he hit his hat trick

Reich to Reed again MNF against the Rams

Kyle Williams 100% catch rate and rushing TD efficiency

Fred Jackson posterizing Chris Conte

Marshawn against the Bengals his rookie year made me confident we had a great one

Honorable mentions for more recent plays:

Jerry getting held by Joe Thomas, forcing the fumble, picking it up, and running it for 6 all in one play

Chris Hogan's flying acrobat catch against the Vikings before Watkins' last second TD for the win against the Vikings

Tre White peanut punching the ball out of Humphries' hands to beat Tampa

Josh Allen's bomb to Foster as he was getting crunched

The entire Josh Allen highlight reel in the first Dolphins game

Kyle's pass-catching abilities were underutilized his final season especially. Prolly could've earned more separation throwing his bulk around than KB ever managed <sigh>

A run by Tim Tindale through the  middle of Dolphins defense in playoffs in a record breaking game

Absolutely! Tindale, the "Canadian Flash" had his breakout game of sorts that day--the run you're thinking of is his 44 yarder (as a FB no less) I think? It's at the 16:41 mark here:

Our last playoff win.. If we only knew then.

Fergy to Frank Lewis closing seconds @ Jets for the win, 1980.

Some immediate one's that come to mind that haven't been mentioned.

-Flutie's naked bootleg for game winning TD against Jaguars.

-Carlton Bailey's pick 6 against the Broncos in AFC Championship game.

-Sam Adams rumbling into end zone on Brady fumble opening day 2003.

-Bruce Smith strip sack of Randell Cunningham

Don Beebe chasing down showboating Leon Lett and stripping the ball, preventing a touchdown in a blowout Super Bowl loss, was not only the greatest play in Bills history, but also the quintessential metaphor for the history of the franchise:

Yeah, that's something to revel in.

"It was a great learning moment for the kids".

I always loved the Ronnie Harmon drop in the Browns playoff game, myself.

As a big fan of the early 80s Bills my most memorable play is the Fergy to Roland Hooks Hail Mary versus Patriots in 1981.  Two passes from our 20 to win with time running out!  Great to hear Van Miller on the radio call too - sorry unable to embed video.  Worth the watch!!

Kelly fumbles the snap on the first drive against the Raiders in the championship game. He picks it up, turns, runs to his right and (in the words of the great Dick Enberg) "throws to Lofton for a touchdown!"

Some others that jump straight to mind:

Sam Adams lumbering into the endzone during the 31-0 win on opening day Vs the Pats

Any play involving a Fred Jackson stiff arm

Bruce stopping OJ Anderson on 4th and short in the Super Bowl

The Terrence McGee return that didn't quite make the endzone

Josh's hurdle

Josh's flick of the wrist throw down the field against the Jags

Andre's 3TDs in the comeback

So many

At first I thought there's no way I can pick one play.  Then I thought about what was the most amazing game the Bills ever played and I kept coming back to the playoff comeback win against Houston.

So I figured it had to be a play from that game and while I thought the Beebe TD catch was big I'll go with the successful onside kick executed right after that TD.  That led to the Bills cutting the Houston's lead from 35 - 3 to 35 - 17 and suddenly the corpse stirred.

The flutie vs jax game is when i believed in him. He had to make a great throw to Eric Moulds to set up that play- moulds was not yet even competent- and the bootleg was a busted play. Flutie had an ability to improvise that few could.

Anytime Nathan Peterman touched the ball.... ?

As someone who became a fan in ‘03, my memories have less to do with winning. But some that stand out:

Ryan Lindell (or Morman) fake fd pass td to Ryan Denny.

Chris Kelsey pick six vs Romo on MNF.

Fred Jackson violating Chris Conte (who someone stayed around long enough to let it happen again. Dude. Retire)

Sam Adams pick six.

Drayton Florence Pick six of Brady in our first win of the pats since the first game I ever watched.

TT to Percy Hardin in week 1 vs the colts (ah the excitement...)

Josh Allen throwing the ball so hard that Tom Brady’s genitals fall off (this one happens this coming season)

The first catch (also by Roland Hooks) was one of the best of all time. Couldn't find it anywhere on line though. Yes I was at the game and did not leave early.

Surprised Flutie's Naked Bootleg  took so long to get a mention in this thread.

You also referenced the Sam Adams play which is definitely one for the ages

Agreed.  Why this is memorable for me, is it secured a playoff spot for the Bills in a long, long time.

The Rochester D& C ran a headline - Smerlas Blocks Out The past.

When OJ planted his foot and turned the run up field, it was like he was shot out of a gun.  He just accelerated away from everyone.  Great memory!

Yep. You just can’t coach world class speed. And OJ had it.
