Incognito's Retirement? [update: Now Released]

Huge mistake. How do you play hardball with Boldin, then do this with Richie?

Bizarro.  I get that he played well here, but this is too much.

I don’t mind being rid of the dude but hate the message it sends— throw a fit and get what you want, be a professional and we will play hard ball.

Itll be interesting to see how the league reacts to him. Does he get a deal for more money?

There are 32 teams. Prolly five of those teams have an offensive line worse than Buffalo's. Richie will sign with someone. Amusingly, it will be around the same $ Bflo agreed to.

So by being a prickhead, Richie gets to undo a contract he signed, and then gets to choose his destiny.

Weak signal for roster discipline from the Bills FO. "Play enough games, we'll let you go."

Take this for what it's worth I was told by a security guard at one bills drive that Ritchie called the pegulas hammered one night and said a few choice words to them and he is 100% banned from buffalo bills property.

Well, the janitor at OBD told me that isn’t quite how it happened. In fact, it was Kim and Terry that were gassed and called Ritchie up, ranting and raving at him. Ritchie took it hard and was offended by their hurful words and we are where we are at today because of it.

Free agent OG Richie Incognito informed the Bills he will not retire before they granted his release on Monday.

Some teams in the Bills' position wouldn't budge after feeling a player turned his back on them, but Buffalo quickly allowed Incognito to move on and begin engaging other teams. Although he's a short-term fix going on age 35, Incognito is plenty capable of helping a team at guard. The Ravens with ex-Bills OC Greg Roman make sense. The Bengals could also use another upgrade inside.

Ass backwards.

No way anyone touches him for more than a mid level 1 year deal.  Especially with this latest instability.  Richie played himself, and the Bills.

I really wish this woulda just died awhile back. I hate that he's ended this way and put such a sour taste in our mouths. he was honestly one of my favorite bills in quite some time and now I don't even know if I could stand to put his jersey on that I bought just last year.

I'm not going to trash (unless he goes to the pats*) him for his decision. he came here and turned his career around and played well.

wish him well

Classy ^^^

It’s hard to fathom why the Bills may have prompted all of this by seeking a pay cut with him.  Equally as hard to fathom why he would have agreed to it, then retired, then un-retired.  The whole situation is full of question marks.

Look, it is what it is. As long as he doesn't go to the Pats AFCE for that matter, I don't care. he has what 35? yea he doesn't have to much left in the tank anyhow.

"next man up?" who knows but I have confidence the Bills will handle the loss well

Wow.... I just knew he wouldn't stay retired, but damn that stubborn Bean. We should have gotten one more year from Richie had Bean & Co. not slapped him in the face with a pay cut. Had a very good year, thanks, here's two thirds of your salary for the coming year...

Depends. If I work for Joe's Garage, then probably. Anything larger, unlikely.

Bosses number? Yes.

The CEOs number?  that’s another story.

McD is the boss. Pegs is the CEO. Huge difference.

I'm hesitant to judge this move as bad before we know all the details. We know from the Boldin thing last year that Beane doesn't let players walk all over him. I'm guessing there's something more to this story.

I agree and my guess is the FO is happy to see him go and want nothing to do with him.

Another poster said something similar and added that the FO knows or made sure that Incognito is persona non grata with most clubs......

With Boldin, if he wanted to "unretire" we WANTED him

With Incognito, they were like, oh here ya go, deuces....

Says a alot about how they feel about Incognito and the players are "in the know" unlike us so I doubt this sends the "wrong messege"

I can understand and respect that. A late round draft pick might have been a nice parting gift, but I’m sure they thought of that. Was there ZERO market for him? Does it help us financially? Oh well, build that line!!!

I had actually wondered if a potential trade was part of the whole outburst.

Let's say hypothetically 'Cog likes playing in Buffalo...small market, less nightlife to distract during the season, less media attention, passionate fans, gets on with his teammates.

Takes a paycut to help keep the line together and stay where he's comfortable.

They traded Glenn, meaning with Wood's retirement 2/5 of the line is gone.

Now let's say hypothetically, the Bills were shopping 'Cog to a trade partner where he did not want to go.  He flips out, has "buyer's remorse" about taking the new contract, starts contemplating how if he didn't sign, and they cut him, he'd be in much better shape as he could choose his destination and negotiate for more $$.  Since I think he's about 3 peas short of a casserole, I could then see him flipping out, firing his agents who led him down this path, "retiring" etcetera.

Again this is hypothetical

How would he get their personal phone number?

The Pegulas have made a thing of meeting with players and seeking input (under Ryan, it was a story).

If the Pegulas really wanted to  impress players with their sincerity of wanting to hear from them if they felt there was a problem, I could see them giving a phone number.

I see this as part of the process of re signing, he is now free to renegotiate a new deal...

wouldn't surprise me at all if he shops then signs with buffalo

Unfortunately it does indicate that the good guy won’t be treated as well as the troublemakers.

Theres almost no chance we wanted boldin and wouldn’t extend him this courtesy.

Its not the end of the world but its definitely not ideal

How quickly some people on this board turn on bills players is weird and mental.  Should have payed the man his value.  This game they are playing will blow up in their face eventually.  Players contemplate retirement all the time.  It's not a sign of mental weakness.  Bet its harder than you think to hit a wall 30 times a week for 16 weeks.

Poor Richie,

His career is probably over years ago if Buffalo doesnt reach out and give him a second chance.   The bills totally screwed this up.

Or.....Richie might have been a cap casualty if he doesnt redo his deal which happens all...the...time

He signed the contract then turned on it.

Why was his old contract his value but not his new contract?

I get it, and I’m fine with it. I guess they just couldn’t get anything for him. He WAS gone, they WERE rid of him....but if you have a little leverage to get something in return, I’d try that. I’m guessing they did and nobody wanted to give anything for him....

..probably correct Augie......we'll never know the gory details and it's probably better to take the high road and leave it "in house".....Richie vs Boldin is apples vs oranges.....Boldin was here for what, 10 days?......Bflo took a chance on Richie with initial signing, and then gave him a new deal after he proved he atoned for the Miami fiasco.....he DID serve this team well for three years.....Boldin did squat........

Bills made a smart move.  The guy can play and was a leader.  I heard differently about how the salary structure went down.  But I cant give up my sources.  ;)

I think this is DUMB.  We have huge holes on the offensive line.  I feel sorry for Shady and whoever is going to be the starting QB.  Given Shady's reaction the first time, I cannot imagine he is happy at all about this.

Why are we biting off our nose to spite our face.

McBeane should have done the same thing they did with Boldin.  Either Richie players for the Bills or he does not play at all (unless they could get reasonable compensation).

This was not managed well.

P.S. Richie is not innocent either but there had to be some middle ground after he realized that he was giving up too much.

Just my two cents.

You dont have to give up sources...if you have additional info for the discussion I would def like to hear it.

I've been a fan of the RI redemption story and certainly appreciate the game day experience he brought to the team. But, he's a 35 year old guy who was all over the place enotionally just a month ago. I wish him no ill will but something odd is afoot.

i can't see anything other than trusting the Bills that this is best for the team.

You want an uncommitted player protecting our QB of the future?

That sounds scary
