Now for the Russell Wilson side which I don’t understand: If Wilson wanted to get a guaranteed starting gig he would’ve been best served to wait this out. He was going to sign a 1 year $1.2 mil contract no matter the team, and the timing didn’t matter for the contract. His agent doesn’t care because he’s getting paid regardless but the smart move for him was to wait until after all the other free agent QBs signed and after the draft. Then Rus can look at the landscape and make his choice. Almost every team in the league would take Rus for one year at this deal. What if the raiders at pick 13 missed out on all the rookie QBs they targeted and end up after the draft only having 2nd year QB O’Connell on the roster. Wouldn’t that situation be more attractive? Or better yet the Vikings with their plethora of weapons. Bet if he did well there he’d get a nice contract in next years free agency. The 1 year, $1.2 mil was going to be the contract every team in the NFL was going to offer. Nothing else would’ve made sense from either side. Rus needed to pick the team that gave him another chance to show he’s not washed so he can get one last “big” payday. I think he chose poorly but we’ll see. My money is on Pickett bouncing back and winning the job. If Wilson waits until after the draft, teams will make other plans and he could find himself out in the cold. Pittsburgh is perfect for him…pretty solid team around him, he’ll get to compete for the starting gig, and they are unlikely to draft a QB early. I don’t believe any team was going to just hand him the keys, especially after the draft. Where do you think he could have landed that would be better than Pittsburgh? Alphadawg7 Posted March 11 Share Posted March 11 As I said in another thread, the only team in the entire NFL that made sense for Wilson from a potential starters perspective was the Steelers. Between the defense and run game, they don't need the QB to carry the team, they just need them not to totally suck and they are a playoff team. If the QB can be solid, they could challenge to win their division. If the QB can be pretty good, they could be a threat in the AFC. But, I wasn't sold that the Steelers would be interested froma locker room fit stand point. But at a million dollars, thats the bargain of a lifetime even for a backup QB so it makes sense as they really are free rolling on this because if he sucks they have nothing vested and can bench or even cut him. And for Wilson, gives him a chance to redeem his image on a one year prove it deal and try and secure his spot in Pitt long term or somewhere else next offseason.
