Russ signs 1yr $1.2M deal with Pittsburgh

So is he literally counting for $1.2M against the cap for the Steelers, is it really that simple?

If so what a deal for Pittsburgh.....yes he's washed but he's still 10x better than Pickett

they’ll be really interesting. If their offense is even average they become a threat

Good move for the Steelers. Wilson just has to be not horrible and they are a playoff team. For 1.2 mil, that’s a good bet

They were a playoff team last year. They should just go 5-12 with Pickett and try to find an answer at QB.

Tomlin gonna Tomlin.

If anyone can wrangle those personalities it's Tomlin

Wilson is a cancer.  And he really isn’t very good anymore.

Meh, he had good numbers but he was playing what I’d call advanced Rodgers/Tyrod ball to do so.

He took some truly horrific sacks and had some really embarrassing throwaways to keep his efficiency looking nice.

Which, for a team like the Steelers, may still be an upgrade, but I didn’t think he was good. He was maybe top 25.

Really isn't very good is a major upgrade over what Pittsburgh has last season. And they are getting it for basically league minimum.

I’m guessing he took a super friendly deal to stick it to the Broncos. Maybe he thought the Steelers were the best bet to knock them out of a wild card spot

Weird.  I get that Denver is on the hook for $39m, but if I’m Wilson I’d want the Steelers to commit more to me than the vet minimum.  Steelers can move on or cut him if he struggles at all without thinking twice.

His contract is a dollar for dollar offset, so he doesn’t get a penny more of actual money unless he gets paid more than $39 million.  The part that isn’t offset is the salary cap, so “earning” more would only hurt the team’s salary cap.

From Steelers POV it’s a genius move. They weren’t going to draft one of the top 6 QBs and now Pickett has legit cheap competition.

Now for the Russell Wilson side which I don’t understand:

If Wilson wanted to get a guaranteed starting gig he would’ve been best served to wait this out. He was going to sign a 1 year $1.2 mil contract no matter the team, and the timing didn’t matter for the contract. His agent doesn’t care because he’s getting paid regardless but the smart move for him was to wait until after all the other free agent QBs signed and after the draft. Then Rus can look at the landscape and make his choice. Almost every team in the league would take Rus for one year at this deal. What if the raiders at pick 13 missed out on all the rookie QBs they targeted and end up after the draft only having 2nd year QB O’Connell on the roster. Wouldn’t that situation be more attractive? Or better yet the Vikings with their plethora of weapons. Bet if he did well there he’d get a nice contract in next years free agency.

All in all it wasn’t a bad move because he could very well beat out Pickett (I doubt it) but the smart move would’ve been to wait

True but the counter to that is if your Russ you'd want the best team around you as possible to be successful.  Taking the veteran minimum helps them accomplish that.

Exactly! The 1 year, $1.2 mil was going to be the contract every team in the NFL was going to offer. Nothing else would’ve made sense from either side. Rus needed to pick the team that gave him another chance to show he’s not washed so he can get one last “big” payday. I think he chose poorly but we’ll see. My money is on Pickett bouncing back and winning the job.

But as a fan of NFL chaos this was the best outcome because now Cousins and Fields bidding war will be more fun to watch

He did it to prove how much Denver means to him.

Why would you wait until the draft when there are less options on the board?

He basically had his pick of interested teams now

Disagree.  If Wilson waits until after the draft, teams will make other plans and he could find himself out in the cold.  Pittsburgh is perfect for him…pretty solid team around him, he’ll get to compete for the starting gig, and they are unlikely to draft a QB early.  Please explain how he could have done better…no team is handing him a starting job.

This is not a knock on Pittsburgh’s supporting cast it’s about Wilson deciding too quickly

He was in the most unique situation in NFL history. A free QB every team would’ve taken because like I said he is basically free (1 year $1.2 mil).

Why rush?

Just my opinion but I’d bet after the draft we’re going to see a team still lacking at the QB position and we will be like man Wilson should’ve waited and been the starter there.

Again Pittsburgh could work out but wouldn’t that offer still be there after the draft? Steelers resign Rudolph? Maybe… but even if they do they’ll offer that same 1yr $1.2 mil contract because it’s a nothing contract that EVERY team in the NFL would give him

You still haven’t explained how Wilson could have found a better landing spot.  I don’t believe any team was going to just hand him the keys, especially after the draft. Where do you think he could have landed that would be better than Pittsburgh?

As I said in another thread, the only team in the entire NFL that made sense for Wilson from a potential starters perspective was the Steelers.  Between the defense and run game, they don't need the QB to carry the team, they just need them not to totally suck and they are a playoff team.  If the QB can be solid, they could challenge to win their division.  If the QB can be pretty good, they could be a threat in the AFC.

But, I wasn't sold that the Steelers would be interested froma locker room fit stand point.  But at a million dollars, thats the bargain of a lifetime even for a backup QB so it makes sense as they really are free rolling on this because if he sucks they have nothing vested and can bench or even cut him. And for Wilson, gives him a chance to redeem his image on a one year prove it deal and try and secure his spot in Pitt long term or somewhere else next offseason.
