If Hyde and Poyer Are Healthy, We're Undefeated

This is NOT an excuse.  EVERY team suffers injuries.  Baltimore's season was wiped out last year with injuries.  Chargers this year.  Pittsburgh lost the Defensive Player of the Year for half a season.

But if Hyde and Poyer were healthy and played every game this year, I believe this team is 9 - 0, maybe 8 - 1 (possible would have lost Jets debacle regardless).  It's pretty obvious that they are the heart and soul of this defense.

Right now, forget about home field.  Goals: (1) cross your fingers we are healthy as possible going into playoffs; (2) clean up the turnovers; (3) find a way to run for first downs on 2nd and short and 3rd and short.

Don't see how you could make such an assumption when we aren't generating hardly any pass rush to speak of, and our offense has done almost nothing in the second half for 3 straight games now.

It is truly amazing that people continue to critique the defense and look for Frasier's replacement when the defense made significant game winning stops. Yes they gave up 33 points. They were also out what, Hyde, Poyer, Elam, Rousseau, and I believe Edmunds for most of this game.

The Bills org has built a very strong team that continues to compete despite getting hit by the injury bug. One only needs to look at the Ravens last year as a team that completely collapsed when hit with injuries.

Not really 33, we gave them the 7 on the Allen fumble so even with overtime it was 26 points, only 23 in regulation.

And if the Browns had Watson from day 1 this season, they would probably take a run at a Super Bowl. The Bills will NEVER EVER be as healthy as they were last year when 13 seconds happened and it seems as they they have STILL not overcome that mental lapse that takes place in the last few minutes.

The Bills are the Ravens of last year with injuries and we just have to hope 2023 is different...

We gave up 13 seconds and the Hail Murray with a healthy roster. We've been giving up 3rd and long and 4th and long as long and McD and Frazier have been here. Injuries are completely unrelated to what's happening here. it's situational decision making that's the problem - not talent.

The common denominator to the bills 3 losses?

0 offensive Touchdowns in their 3 losses in the 2nd half.

That is why they aren’t undefeated, not cause of injuries

exactly.  also, redzone issues and turnovers did it.  have fewer huge errors in the redzone, or simply avoid a turnover or two a game, and we win em all.

obviously, this team is struggling and it's the same thing as before -- we either blow teams out or get beat close (kc and baltimore wins this year excepted).  the particular reason whey seems a little different this year vs last, and our d obviously has fallen off since the start of the season, quite understandable given who is hurt, but we gotta get the TE and RB position more productive in order to reduce the risk on our O.  hines and knox and cook and motor and 85 represent 5 roster spots and some decent cap room giving us just zero right now.  it's not all their fault either, plays need to be called and josh needs some kinda forceful coaching making him get a grip on the sugar high hero ball stuff.

im more frustrated with this team than i have been in a dog's age, but we are really close and i think we get over the hump.

You’re correct. We have an all-pro roster that has covered up poor coaching for a while.

Take away the all/pro’s and you’re left with just coaching.

Hyde and Poyer were not All-Pros before coming here. Thats gotta mean something for the coaching staff right?

Pretty smart hanging the hopes of your defense on a couple of old guys.

Would Hyde and Poyer somehow have a way to prevent our QB throwing mind-blowingly stupid and avoidable interceptions?

Or would they have stopped calling the run despite its early success?

And yet in all 3 losses, the defense did enough to put the Bills in position to win the game

The defense was to blame for losing the Jets game. They got absolutely slapped in the mouth and had no answers on that gw drive

Poyer and Hyde would have chosen to put 3 points on the board to go up by two touchdowns instead of idiotically going for it.

Dude, there's something rotten in Denmark when it comes to this team.

I think it's among the coaching staff. Who, I can't say. Probably in this order:

1) McDermott

2) McDermott

3) McDermott

4) Frazier

5) Dorsey

Lol the defense gave up 20 points (below the Jets season average) and 7 of them came off a drive that started inside the Bills 20. But you’re right, it’s the defense’s fault Josh threw 2 terrible picks and the offense couldn’t score more than 17 points.

I was think the exact same thing.   Poyer saved the Baltimore game, a game we were lucky to to win.   I am not reaady to abandon hopes of home field after two bad losses.

Don't think we will earn home field.  However any seeds above us could be upset and we back into hosting a playoff game including a afccg.  Long shot but until the math is impossible it has a chance.

I totally agree with the title of this thread.  My question is that they traded for a veteran safety that knows their system, why put a 1st time starter out there with another rookie against one of the best receivers in the league??

Yeah, signing vets to ride the bench doesn't make much sense to me, especially given McD's general dislike of relying on rookies, which makes it even stranger.

Not getting a legitimate starting caliber safety at the trade deadline may be a huge mistake no matter what it would have cost.

Who was available out there that we could've had at a price that would've made sense for us?

We signed Marlowe, a guy that already knows our D,  and they still played who they played yesterday.

There had to be someone available. There always is for the right price. They just did not want to pay the price and give up draft picks. That may help next year but it won't help this year when they are strong contention and down two starting safeties. Have you seen Poyer's elbow?

Marlowe is just another guy. Just like the other guy. Not starting caliber.

As they shouldn't.  And unless you have inside info who was available that we didn't go after and not have to overpay for, this is pure speculation.

I feel injuries are a huge part of the problem this season & the fact that Josh has to develop chemistry with a bunch of new players because some of the old ones that he was VERY comfortable with were either made to or have moved on !

I disagree, especially when you look around the rest of the league including our own division and the injuries the Jets and Dolphins have dealt with.

It's just another poor excuse to deflect from Beane and McD's failures that they are no longer going to be able to run from especially with the brutal schedule still left compared to the last few years when they were able to pull out of a funk.
