Poor coaching by McDermott is becoming a theme

Has anyone mentioned taking a timeout on the Dolphins 1st punt?

Wasting that timeout blew our chance at a FG at the end of the 1st half.

Wow, totally forgot about that timeout before the punt.

What in the world was that about.

McKenzie had to go out multiple times.

2 practice squad DT called up.

Kumerow who has played decently also leaves with an injury.

100 degree heat index and no shade.

Thats what we dealt with today.

I was watching with 2 Chicken Little’s today. Bills suck, bad coaching, etc. it’s early and we’re banged up.

great points about the heat index. That’s brutal!!

I disagree, but only because threads like these pop up any time we lose, while credit goes unnoticed when we win.

And McDermott has accomplished far more winning than losing.

Same is true for all our coaches. Whenever Josh didn't play well last year, it was Daboll's fault. When the defense didn't make a stop, it was Frazier's fault.

Yet when we're playing with a skeleton crew defense filled with rookies, undrafted FA's & backups, holding the Dolphins to 219 yards & basically containing Hill/Waddle, where are the threads praising Frazier's defensive prowess?

When McDermott has the balls to keep pushing the pace & forgo punting, putting trust in Dorsey & his offense, where's his praise? What about Dorsey's for providing Allen a smooth transition from coordinator to coordinator, dialing up all the right plays designed with Josh's comforts & strengths in mind?

But no, we have armchair play callers only hopping on to bash any mistake or failure.

Andy Reid, the guy who is constantly talked up as the best offensive mind in the game, couldn't coach his Chiefs past the 0-1-1 Colts today. Belichick's defense just had the Ravens drop 37 on them. SB winner, offensive Guru Sean McVay (5-0 in home openers) couldn't put get his team more than 10 points against the Bills...

*********************************

TL;DR - ALL coaches make mistakes, ALL have shortcomings, ALL lose games, but that doesn't mean they aren't still great.

The only way I could justify it is if we had 12 men on the field and wanted to avoid a penalty, or they had an uncovered gunner that they could throw too.

The broadcast was worthless though so I have no idea.

Brutally bad timeout

Like a coach can just throw the challenge flag anytime he wants an explanation?!

Rules, like NFL concussion protocols, are meant to be conveniently ignored.

I've seen it called as a Delay of Game but I'm not sure what benchmarks have to be met to consider it a penalty.

Or maybe coach gets one warning first?

If you throw it in an instance that doesn't qualify you should probably at least lose a challenge or a TO.

A very consistent theme of McDermott's is his love of pissing away timeouts in situations where he (and only he) thinks it's important to burn a TO.

He does this all the time and has done this since the beginning.

It's one of his many "in game tactician" flaws.

Note how Bill Belichick ALWAYS finds a way to hang onto all 3 of his TOs for crunch time when he needs them.

You may want to research logical fallacies.

Hacket being worse doesn’t make McDermott good.

That is correct, which is unusual for someone who started such a lazy and ridiculous thread.

McDermott being good is what makes McDermott being good. It's more complex than that, of course, and I expressed it as it's own logical fallacy. But the point is true.

The reason people say in overwhelming numbers that McDermott is good is that he does good things for the team, things good coaches do. In far larger numbers than the bad things he does. No coach is perfect. McDermott is one of the best in the league.

I haven't been here after the game till just now, so many people have already probably said this and things like it. But down the road this game will almost surely be seen as this year's version of the first Pats game last year when the conditions had a far out-sized effect on the game and made it a bizarre outlier.

Says the man on a day when Belichick used a timeout at 10:00 in the 2nd corner for no tactical reason.

Plenty of times TOs are used for great reasons that fans aren't privy to. Sometimes not.

Spending a timeout can cause problems down the road. Or not. Plenty of times the problem at hand is as bad or worse than what will come up down the road. McDermott's fine about TOs. Not a big problem of his.

Sure coaching definitely could have been better, clock management for sure. But McD didn't drop a TD catch, a pick 6, to a TD throw, miss a FG, bobble an end of half snap, make it 100+ degree heat index w/ no shade on the sidelines. While he could have been better for sure he had his very shorthanded team in position to win not once but twice. Players got to execute.

- Challenging a clear Titans catch last week was indefensible

I was at the Titans game.  The scoreboard replay showed an angle of this play where you did not see the guy toe tap his right foot.  The crowd went berserk and I believe McD may have been influenced by it.  Of course after it was challenged you saw another angle where both feet were in.

Yeah my brain works a bit differently than the average person I think.

Um, yeah, fair enough.

Just in your OP you called a bunch of things indefensible that are very defensible, and dug deep into scapegoat territory by blaming McDermott for several things that he's not particularly to blame for.

He's far from perfect, as I'm sure he'd tell you. Needs to keep improving as I'm sure he'd agree. But he's one of the best coaches in the league.

I don’t disagree. I have been really down on McD since the 13 seconds. I feel he crapped his pants in a huge moment and doesn’t get enough criticism for it. I’m fact, the sight of him makes me a little queasy.

That said…he’s our best option. He has helped build the team and deserves a lot of the credit. However…I wish he would push for more offensive help to take some of the burden off Allen.

that, and bring pressure on 3rd and long.  No 3 man rush crap, esp right after a sack

He's below average, using measurable objective criteria, as a game-day coach...

I think you are focusing on big picture stuff.  Like he figured out which poisonous players to get rid of, he knows what types of players he likes, he gets everyone going in the same direction, he seems to motivate well, he gets players to want to play for each other....all that stuff.

He's a great franchise builder.

I don't know why he can't remain that guy as the head coach, but someone (quite frankly) a lot smarter can't be the "Field General" who dictates tactics during games.

Things like challenges should have NOTHING to do with the head coach.  He is no position to make those calls and he's not a review specialist...he's too busy building a football franchise.

In the years ahead, I think we will see a more sophisticated breakdown of power on the sidelines.

The thing I get a kick out of is watching the head coach (as though he doesn't have enough to worry about during a game) yell at sideline officials...like that is also supposed to be his job--work the refs to try and get a better call next time.

It's so old fashioned and stupid....I hope it changes.

I couldn't agree more. Stop burning early time outs in non emergency situations. This is getting ridiculous. Belichick always keeps 3 in his pocket late in a game. But unfortunately that's Sean's style and I doubt he ever changes. Very frustrating watching early TO's disappear or failed challenges.

We have a great coaching staff. There are some moments I wonder what they are thinking. One thing is certain, they are terrified of Tyreek Hill. The 3rd and 22 call made it way too easy for Tua. Pressure him there and make him throw quick. Play the defense you’ve been playing all game.

add in missed FG, dropped pick 6, dropped TD catch...   and it still went to the last play of the game...  am I disappointed sure, but also extremely opamistic we might only loose one or two more games all year...   KC lost today and I bet they didn't have 9/10ths of the obstacles the bills had today.  Dolphins are meaningless to the Bills, the Bills are so much better than them it not even close.
