What is your favorite football related phrase?

Recommended Posts

I found myself saying "Act like you have been there before" this morning.  Was not even in the context of football but it fit the situation.

It's one of the better phrases I think.  I know it is associated with Barry Sanders just handing the ball to the ref after a TD.  Not sure if it predated him or not.

What are some of your favorite phrases?

PS Yes this is a thread to talk about anything but more mock drafts....

One of my lasting images of Thurman Thomas is him calmly and almost disinterestedly handing the football or tossing it to the official after a touchdown!  It was his trademark.

George Carlin did a great bit talking about the language of football as juxtaposed against the language of baseball.

Hilarious!

  • "Boom" (but only in the John Madden voice and coming immediately after about 12 muttered, indistinguishable words strung together)
  • "Whoooop" (only Chris Berman style)
  • "Jacked up" (must be screamed by everyone present in the room, in chorus, as loudly as possible, immediately following a massive and obviously illegal hit)

That's the most annoying phrase to me. Usually said by someone who's never been there before.

My favorite is "3 yards and a cloud of dust" because of the image it invokes.

I've not heard that before. Who said it?

I have no idea!  Stole it from a google search!

We have a winner.

Yeah, that has to be best.  Right?

I didn't think of that one but that would be my favorite!

“If on 4th down, the quarterback doesn’t complete his pass, they will turn over the ball.” — Booger McFarland

Booger McFarland is meme central for the dumbest sports quotes, though I remember laughing at this one. Then stealing a Popeyes biscuit from the Giants facility got him fired

Former Bucs coach John McKay had some classic quotes. Here are two of them.

Funny John McKay Quotes

When asked about his team’s execution: “I’m in favor of it.”

"We didn’t tackle well today, but we made up for it by not blocking."

“Look it up, Thurman.”

”When it’s too tough for them, it’s just right for us.”

”Where else would you rather be than right here, right now.”

Marv was marvelous with the turn of a phrase.

This is my favorite clip of that type:

Maybe getting a little off topic, but I love this!

"This is football."
