Bears were told they are not allowed to open betting spots on site even tho it's legal now

Are supposedly looking into a stadium not in downtown Chicago...

Making local politicians nervous... Soldier Field is the oldest stadium in the NFL

The new Soldier Field opened in 2002. It's not close to being the oldest stadium.

Is it brand new or just fully refurbished?

Like they did to Lambo and arrowhead

I don't recall ever getting torn down and rebuilt... Just a massive upgrade

It's silly when a stadium that is relatively new gets deemed obsolete so quickly. Washington FC wants a new place. The Georgia Dome lasted 20 years and the dome in St Louis was already obsolete after 20 year and was a reason the Rams left. What happened to building something that lasts? I would hope that if the Bills get a $1.4 billion stadium, they are in it for 40-50 years. Heinz Field in Pittsburgh was a very low cost stadium and everyone is happy with that. Send someone to Pittsburgh to see what they did so well.

Good they should leave. Nobody deserves to live in Chicago... except the people already there. Build walls around it, with a one way door. In. Chicago doesn't deserve an NFL team, not even a perennial loser like the Bears. I don't care where they go - LA, Flint, MI, or Jacksonville to be crosstown rivals to the Jags, or fold all together. That team is neon green lipstick on a 3 day dead pig.

It's the same stadium. The original Soldier Field is still intact, they just added $500M to it so that it looks like a giant spaceship landed on top of the original Soldier Field.

It still sucks, and the parking/tailgate situation is the worst in the NFL. I turn down free tickets every year because it's such a hassle.

Yeah, I knew it was in the same space, but I thought it was basically new ($500 million was a lot in 2000 too). I've been to the old one and not the new one, so you'll know better than me.

Yeah, that appears to be right. Lambeau's upgrade made it basically a new stadium.

And the bills paid $130 million to upgrade the Ralph with black paint

I hope any stadium Erie County/NYS contributes to has a lease rent agreement that Bills need to pay back lease WITHOUT ability to pay it off early and leave.

Make it more economical for Bills to just borrow from NFL and have Erie County/NYS pay for infrastructure, traffic control, etc.

Bills would collect any parking revenue, any events held there, etc.

Doubt parties will do what makes sense.

If they do this however and just drop "Buffalo" out of name since Buffalo has not contributed to keeping Bills.

Can't be as bad as WTF stadium where you can not even attend unless you pay either for parking or shuttle bus for "safety" (of $nyder's wallet).

The previous comment is correct.  More or less, the entirety of the old Soldier Field was razed.  All they kept were the columns and they built a brand new stadium inside the pillars.  It looks pretty bad - it looks like a spaceship landed inside the classic pillars.  The two styles just don't match architectually at all.  The accessiblity is difficult (on the lakefront, east of Lake Shore Drive, a very busy multi-lane (in both directions) "expressway" that separates the lakefront from the city.  There is limited parking and some if its ramps, so the tailgating is very limited.  Tickets are extremely expensive.  I used to live in Chicago and the only time I went to games were 1) if the Bills were in town or 2) I was offered free tickets AND the Bills were not playing at the same time.  I turned down free tickets to see the Bears at Sodier Field many times in favor of watching the Bills on TV.

It's still a classic venue and a good place to see an NFL game.  It would suck if they moved to Arlington Heights (a suburb) and would change the character of the franchise.  The spot they are considering is the site of Arlington Raceway and old, but nice/fun horse racing venune.

The Bears and Soldier Field aside, I don't get the hate for Chicago expressed by a poster a few posts up.  It's a great city.  Great people, fantastic architecture, great food, tons to do indoors and out, and the list goes on.  It's a world-class city, but has great neighborhoods and a midwestern type of feel.  Honestly, it's a lot like a bigger, more cosmopolitan Buffalo, and when I lived there, there was a huge community of Buffalo ex-pats who were friends and hung out to watch Bills games at a couple of bars, went to see the Bills and Sabres while in town, etc.  That is still the case.  The city has had its challenges with gun violence, protests, etc., but so have many other big cities.  I have spoken with my friends who still live there and visited there recently, and a lot of this has been overblown by the media.

And Marv still lives there, in my old neighborhood, where I ran into him a couple of times over the years and chatted a little bit about the Bills.

People like to hate on everything and anything

For what it's worth I've always thought Chicago was like a much bigger Buffalo as well... Buffalo has that Midwest type vibe opposed to a NYC or Boston vibe... Beautiful architecture , food etc

Not to mention it's a Midwestern dialect we speak in Buffalo... Our vocabulary and lingo are all Midwest not new England or NYC

They aren’t demanding public money. If you’re a Bills fan you better hope the cost is spread over as many people as possible or your ticket is going to cost a fortune! Terry and Kim don’t owe you a new stadium.

Just so everyone is clear, Soldier Field is 100% a new stadium, except for the old original facade. And yes, Chicago is a terrific city.

I don't think the age of the stadium is the point of the article

It's that they're willing to build their own stadium if they don't get what they want from the city .. outside of the city

Buffalo's not the only city with some hard ball being played over a stadium

Im indifferent as I don’t like nor dislike them.  They’ve been largely irrelevant in my eyes forever.  Even their recent playoff appearances were first round outs.

People take everything they hear at face value, that’s where the Chicago hate comes from. There’s also some truth to much of it, but it’s not the only city with problems. Much like other places, your experience is going to depend on the company you keep, and where you visit. I’m just old enough to remember when NYC was vilified, before people starting seeing it as some kind of utopia.

Big northern cities and west coast cities are being villified because of politics right now... but Dallas is a truck stop... Fla is getting swamped by rising waters and Tampa is a bone factory... yeh polluted ocean... everywhere has its issues... Beauty is in the eye of the beholder... me I am a northern boy and don't do heat well...

The Bears ownership feels like Ralph after the Super Bowl run, they seem to want to make the team good but just can't get the right GM/HC combo. That or they're just cheap.

Chicago was founded by people from NYC who thought, "We like New York's congested streets and crime, but it's just not cold enough here."

Just kidding. We live about 80 miles from The Loop and we always enjoy our visits to the city. It's actually pretty clean and if you stay away from certain areas, it's quite safe.

Travel south of Roosevelt Rd and your survival rate drops 30%. Stay away from any towns named after trees, wood, park, ridge or Cicero. The further west you are the safer you are. Conceal and carry if possible if you are within a 20mile radius of Comiskey Park. West Garfield Park and Englewood are war zones, if you get a flat tire or have car trouble I would call 911 and not even get out of the car. Before coming here I highly recommend reading Most Dangerous Parts of Chicago: How to Stay Safe in a Red Zone.

This is a good description.  I was there once - for the Fred Jackson stiff arm overtime win - what a game! - and it was really disappointing.  What's different about is that it isn't surrounded by parking.   After the game, everyone, 60,000 people had to walk a half mile or more before anyone got close to their cars.   My friend and I had my wife pick us up at a street corner a mile from the stadium, because there just wasn't any way to drive and park a reasonable distance from the stadium.

Still, the place is awfully new to be talking about building a new one.   It's a measure of how much wealth there is in some communities.   No way Buffalo is building a new stadium and 20 minutes later talking about building a new one.

I talked to a bunch of Bears fans pre game at the tailgate when Bears came here in 2018 and stomped us. We were in the Hammer Lot. They were blown away. Said it was worth the 9 hour drive to go to a real tailgate compared to what their Sunday experience is in Chicago.

The majority of the parking for Bears games is in underground garages, they don't even allow tailgating in those, plus you'd basically be in a cave full of cars. Plus they're a couple miles away from the stadium and you have to take a shuttle bus. There's still a couple smaller outdoor lots near the stadium, but they're hard to obtain. There used to be tons of outdoor parking back in the day, but nowadays entire area around Soldier Field is park land & of course the museums, there's literally no more space to add a parking lot, unless they knock down a few skyscapers. There's no bars anywhere near it either. The Ralph has plenty of flaws, but WNY people have no idea how good they have it with the game day experience.
