DCofNC
I called this a solid option for Dalton, if for no other reason than putting tape together behind a good line with great weapons, hope to pull a Foles/Tannehill. His hope has to be getting a lot of preseason action to show he still has it, Dak either holds out or gets hurt, he gets to play with a stud cast and hopefully earns a big contract next year. Good move on his part. The only other places that made sense for a shot to earn a contract from the #2 role was going to be the Browns, Bills, Texans, Bucs, Steelers, Panthers or maybe Arizona. The Pats have nothing for weapons, but they could win games, not the best spot for a QB to go to get a contract. Browns and Bills both have weapons and a young qb, so injury risk is pretty low and both are pretty pot committed to their guy, so your not taking the job. Texans, Watson gets dinged up a lot, but no Hopkins and Bellicheck wannabe over there. Bucs and Steelers are banking on old men, but good teams. Panthers are ok, Teddy hasn't played a full season in years, always a chance of injury, Arizona has mobile and tiny qb, stacked w weapons and qb friendly system, I'd go there, but have to bet on Murry getting hurt there too. All things considered, Id go Bucs, but theres a cap problem. So Arizona and Dallas are next on my list. Whos interested and willing to pay? And here we are in Dallas. If they cut Sanu that will bring them to $0 in cap space. They're doing the smart thing which is to accept this year as a rebuild year. In 2021 they're currently projected to have $94 million in cap space. Lucky for us I think Belichick is too good to have them tank the season and end up with Lawrence or Fields. But they look like a 6 win team at best to me, and that's only because Belichick is so good. Their roster is a 2 or 3 win roster. Even with Belichick they will be a bottom 5 team in the league IMO. And Winston probably saw the skill position players and said his best option was to go with the Saints, for probably the same money the Cheaters would have offered, and try to make a play for Brees' job. Dalton got more than the Cheaters could pay, goes home, and again has a far better skill position players around him.

Tony Romo outlived what he could do at the position and he was still extended. So I agree with you that overpaying a QB will put the team in salary cap hell, and when you look at teams who are in salary cap hell, the majority of them have overpaid QBs. It’s made worse by the fact that BB is a terrible GM. He’s built solid defensive teams, but hasn’t built a respectable offense. Brady bailed out all of the mistakes BB made attempting to find talent on offense. Now the Pats are left without a legit QB, and almost no skill position talent on offense. Dak would have to improve his level of play to justify his contract if it was 35 million aav. And that's a big risk to pay on speculation. I think Dak is a very poor mans version of Russell Wilson his first 3-4 years in the league. He manages the game, uses his legs to get some cheap yardage and makes good plays on third down. However Dak unlike Wilson isn't as good of a passer even on the run. Wilson is a good passer in the pocket and an elite passer on the run. Dak is a mediocre passer from the pocket and very good on the run. Can Dak elevate his play? Certainly, but why would you want to pay 35 million with a 90+ million dollar guarantee to hope someone can get better to justify their contract? Dak also has played with a very good O-line, one of the best RB's in the league and a decent complement of receivers that is now stacked and a defense that has been good at times. Paying Dak 35 million means the defense has to get worse or his complementary pieces have to get worse. That's not a winning recipe. Would another team pay Dak 35 million? I don't know, there are some QB thirsty teams out there that would. Cousins a few years ago got offered 30 million and took 27 million fully guaranteed for 3 years. Bleeding Bills Blue
From what i can tell - this puts pressure on Dak to report/play under the tag/negotiate a new deal. Dak lost a bit of leverage when the cowboys signed a backup with 133 career starts. If he holds out - cowboys can still retain his rights, and they aren't wasting a year of the roster they put together. If Dak doesn't report, there's a good chance Dalton has one of his better seasons, and comes into free agency in 2021 looking for some tannehill money.
