Classic live albums

Just Jack

Recommended Posts

Going to see Peter Frampton tonight and it got me thinking, what live albums of artists/bands are classics? Anyone can make a live album, but which ones are considered ones you must listen to at least once, or even own.

This is open to all eras/genre, but I'm going to start with some older stuff...

Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive

Neil Diamond - Hot August Night

Johnny Cash - At Folsom Prison

Here's a link if you want to get some ideas...

I went through the list, and I was surprised that I was familiar with about half of them.  I didn’t think it would be that many.

Cheap Trick in Japan was on the list, and I was looking for that one.

Did I miss it, or was there no Woodstock? Perhaps because Woodstock would be a compilation of artists.

I’m sure there will be more, but these two have to be on my list. Great choices.

Damn, that's a good list by Rolling Stone.

The Who-Live at Leeds is probably right where it should be, in the top 5.

I love the inclusion of Muddy Waters at Newport.

Allman Brothers at Fillmore East would make it just on the strength of Whipping Post alone.

If someone not on the list can make it on one song alone...Janis Joplin, Ball and Chain, Monterey

it's not exactly a "classic" per se but Gov't Mule Live... With a Little Help From Our Friends is a stellar 4 CD live release.

tons of talented guests, and the band played so long that they ran out of tape and ended up using a fan's recording of the encores.  today's lineup is okay, but for me those power-trio years with Woody were the best.

Funny.  I saw Frampton exactly one year ago tonight.

The answer is Live Bullet, but Frampton Comes Alive was great.

Genesis - Live.jpg

1) Genesis Live

2) Genesis Seconds Out

3) YesSongs

I had that Genesis and Yes phase. I saw Yes live on the revolving stage, and may have seen Genesis live as well. I mean....those were often fuzzy times....I can’t say I DIDN’T see them.

I’ll allow it, but only the original, not 94 or 99.

I don't know you but man am I glad you "allowed" the original... got a laugh here.

Didn't look at the list but always liked Tull's Bursting Out and Zappa Live in New York.

Zep - Song Remains the Same

Queen - Live Killers

Aerosmith - Live Bootleg (not really a bootleg; it's the name of the album)

Rush - All the World's a Stage

Rush - Exit Stage Left

Nirvana - Unplugged

Alice in Chains - Unplugged

Eric Clapton - Unplugged

*** SRV did an Unplugged, but I don't think an album was ever released

No mention yet of Grateful Dead Europe 72?

I loved The Name of This Band is Talking Heads. Memories (can’t wait) is one of my favorite songs from that one.

Both are triple albums.

Frampton Comes Alive is rare for me in that I think it's an all time great but I never really listened to much else by him before or after.

Little Feat's Waiting For Columbus would probably make my top 10.

Other ones I like that didn't make the Rolling Stone list that I don't think have been mentioned in the thread yet:

Rush: All the Worlds a Stage

Yes: Yessongs

UFO: Strangers in the Night

Stiff Little Fingers: Hanx

SRV: Live Alive

Eric Clapton: Just One Night

Blue Oyster Cult: Some Enchanted Evening

Umphreys McGee: Hall of Fame 2011

Govt Mule: Mulennium or Deepest End Live or....

Zappa: Just Another Band From LA

Bottom line is there's too much to choose from.

Holy cow, I can't believe I forgot about Europe '72.  What a great album... it's what really turned me on to the Dead.

Nirvana's MTV Unplugged was the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread topic.  One of my all time favorite live albums given the completely unexpected direction they took with it.

While it's not all one single live show, From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah is also a phenomenal, if not bittersweet, live album.  My biggest musical regret, despite several inopportune opportunities I never saw them live.

Grateful Dead - Europe '72

Allman Bros - Fillmore East

Led Zeppelin - Song Remains the Same

Pink Floyd - Delicate Sound of Thunder

Nirvana - Unplugged

Mad Season - Live at the Moore

Johnny Cash - Live at Folsum Prison

Tragically Hip - Live Between Us

O.A.R. - Any Time Now

Jimmy Smith - Root Down Live!

I love The Band, but I always found The Last Waltz to be kinda meh for some reason.

1971's Humble Pie's Rockin the Fillmore was always good. I used to play it on one of my first Marantz amps! Also, the collection with Eric Clapton and BB King, and the Doors Absolutely Live. You can hear girls yelling Jim!

Nice call on the Doors. Haven't heard that one in ages.
