Magox
I think this pushes Hughes up to around $14-$16M a year. I was hoping we'd get him between $12M-$14M. I don't think that is likely any longer.

LSHMEAB
I think we worry too much about contracts. Premiere players will get paid and the deals they get are going to increase every year as long as the league is raking in the dough. The smart GM's are right near the cap every year and just wiggle resources around. Edited April 5, 2019 by LSHMEAB

Franchiseneedsme
21 minutes ago, Reed83HOF said: look at this: I'm telling you.. front loading contacts is going to be the new norm in the NFL. Teams want flexibility, and front loading is the best way to be that. Teams get a steal if the player is good, and can cut players without much penalty if they don't preform. Bill's are in prime position for this next year. Give Clowney $40M year 1on a 6year $120M deal. Then it's only 16M per year and you can cut him after year 2 without any deal cap money. IgotBILLStopay
If healthy, Ziggy is the value for money signing. Clowney not worth Lawrence money. 39 minutes ago, Reed83HOF said: Cowboys cap woes Bills gain. Exhibit 1 Cole Beasley
JimKellyTryouts
Lots of hot takes and criticisms in here that I don't understand - how is he not worth the money? Frontloading the deal only improves their long term cap situation with so many guys needing deals in the near future, and if Dallas keeps drafting as well as they have, resigning your own is a good problem to have. Whether or not this HC/QB combo can get the job done and get a title is another thing.
GETTOTHE50
Can they win with dak though? Idt so. They will need a ravens-like defensive effort in order to get to the super bowl.
y2zipper
The issue with Front-loading is that the player is under-paid at the end and some guys hold out.

Doc Brown
Can't fault Dallas here as he's a force that consistently applies pressure. Mack and Donald got a larger contract and more guaranteed money so it's not that crazy of a contract. 2 hours ago, John from Riverside said: not a newsflash but this is why you need to draft well.....not just in round 1 but in 2nd and 3rd rounds as well....... Cannot pay all of them....... It's gotten pretty simple. Sign the big free agents when your qb is on his rookie deal. Then draft well so you can replace those free agents when you pay your franchise QB as you acquire comp picks. Easier said than done though.

Hughes going into 2020 will be 32 towards the back end of a pass rushers life span that's not a recipie for a big contract esp with his lower sack totals in recent years. If you can get starters and find a raw star or 2, you've got 3-4 years of controllable costs.

Hawks also just signed two defensive ends in Marsh and Nate Orchard. Obviously those guys aren't game breakers, but it is interesting that they signed two ends the day Lawrence signed this deal. Perhaps they are in all holding pattern with Clark waiting to see where the market was set. Now they have the Wilson imposed deadline on his deal coming up and Clark threatening to hold out. It's an interesting situation to watch in the next week or two.

It was a great trade but I’m very good with letting him walk at that crazy price. And plastic face Jones is insane. He loves him some dudes who are always a threat to get suspended. DL is very good but I would be really nervous paying him that.

I think Clark plays in a 4-3 and is pro typical DE whereas plays in a 3-4 where he is a DE/OLB who specializes in setting the edge (keep plays from bouncing outside him and back into the middle of the field). I could be wrong though. also, Bruce Smith was a 3-4 De which makes what he did even more amazing.

Hughes has been among the league leaders in pressures and PFF rankings the past few years and has been invaluable to this team. Replacing his value and production wont be easy and having him gone without a comparable disruptive player as he would be disastrous for this defense. Which is why they need to get another good pass pressure specialist ASAP. 1
