If he beats the ravens nobody talks about the pick game. If he goes 2-0 look out hype train

There's a non-zero chance Peterman takes the league by storm and never loses the job. I mean it's very unlikely. But so was him winning the job back in May. Crazier things have happened.

Disappointing.  At least the defense would have had to play honest with Allen in there and Shady would have room to run.  I like Peterman, he has a lot of good attributes, but the poor arm strength will be a killer.  The Ravens are going to jam eleven player, a couple cheerleaders and a few assistant coaches into the box and have their secondary jumping routes all day.

I'll keep hope, and I'll pull for the guy, but in my eyes this is not the best chance Buffalo has of winning this game.  My fear is the coaches are willing to sacrifice this season, we'll eventually put Allen in, start piling up wins, and ultimately just miss the playoffs because too many earlier games were considered expendable.

I actually thought we were going to win this one.  Now?  I still think we can, and will still hope they do, but I don't like our chances.  I initially predicted 9-7 with a wild card birth.  After this announcement?  7-9, with people here screaming we should have started Allen sooner.

My excitement for Sunday plumetted, but what can you do?  Maybe the staff knows something I don't.  Maybe they have a plan.  Maybe they'll overachieve like last year.  Still a Bills fan, still going to pull for them.  I hope (desperately) for them and Peterman to prove me wrong.  But this, to me at least, looks like the Bills are already sacrificing the season outright for the sake of the future beyond.

Ugh...not the way I wanted this day or season to start... ?

Others have said that in a truly open competition between a limited veteran and a talented rookie, the limited veteran will almost always win, because they are faster to learn the offense and they understand how to make the plays the OC wants them to make.  Peterman doesn't have a lot of playing experience, but it's his 2nd year in the league and reportedly, the coaches like him because he's a Whiteboard Wizard, so I'm guessing this applies.

Peterman improved his play this preseason and 'earned the gig', we'll hope it carries over when the D's are less vanilla and that he's learned when to "hold his fire" and not try to be a hero.

Whatever it may be I would rather go with Allen. The kid, to me, doesn’t seem like a bad game or games, will faze him and I feel he is clearly more talented.

Whether it’s next year, two years from now or two weeks from now, I think we will have a rough ride when 17 takes over. However, He will be the man once he gets his feet under him.

I wish that was now.

I expected McCarron to win the job as an acceptable care taker until Allen was ready.

I think there are answers to your questions, but they're just  guesses.

In hindsight, they were trying to showcase AJM for trade in the 4th grade.  Extra preseason snaps for Allen << 5th round pick in Beane's mind, especially when Daboll clearly didn't want to open the playbook and even if he escaped concussion protocol, Allen did have a vicious game Sunday and having to play again Thurs is no joke.

I think that McDermott really wanted to give the nod to AJ.  He's got to be scared to death to start Peterman again and look like a fool, even though Peterman overall has clearly had the best preseason.  So he extended the process, but AJ never stepped up and claimed the ring, then he got hurt, then he sucked in the 1st half, so McDermott said "OK Daboll, Peterman it is, and Beane, you can shop McCarron - but if you guys make me look like a fool with this I'm sending for Belicheck's*** Tub O Entrails and you're both going in"

Bleh. Fair enough. The news definitely lowered my excitement for Sunday. I have no illusions that Nate can be serviceable. Reps for Allen would take priority over everything else if they had any interest in starting him.

They brought Allen along at a snail’s pace and when he accelerated it with his own play McD and Daboll threw a bucket of water on him against Cinci.

I hope I’m wrong on Nate P, it’s going to be a long week for me hearing all these Pats fans. The reign of Allen can’t begin soon enough!

I guess one would hope a 7th overall pick could beat out a 5th rounder from the year prior.

It's like people forget about Brady and all the superstars that were late drafts or simply undrafted or taken after busts, and all the numerous high pick busts. As if the draft was a magical process.

Don't get me wrong: I still can't wait for Allen to be in there! If he doesn't start this year, it means Nate is having one hell of a season and that'll be a great "problem" to have. Otherwise, yeah, I do expect to see Josh sooner than later. And he'd excite me more as a fan, way more. But I'll trust the coaches, and support a guy that has refused to crumble after an horrendous first outing.

this is the biggest line of crap that has repeated on here way too many times. if allen  were starting, you don't think they'd stack the box and bring the heat. did you see the cincy game? they would definitely shut the run game down, bring pressure and force allen to make quick decisions and beat them through the air.

i don't get why people think because allen's in there they will play 2 deep and hope to press man at the line. they would play the same style no matter which qb we put in there,

hopefully the counter for us is getting the ball out fast and getting into a rhythm.

He's the starter now because Allen isn't ready.  Nothing more or less.

Disagree. Doesn’t matter. It’s an opinion, impossible to prove. Not a surprise that you feel that way. He’s the Bills QB now, it’s in all our best interest that he plays well. I hope he plays so well that there is no thought of playing someone else.

...did you watch the Cleveland game where exactly that happened?  Box was stacked vs. AJ and Peterman, when Allen was in there the backs played much further off.

Getting the ball out quickly is 90% of this. Peterman is capable of executing this modern day, quick read and deliver, Brady style passing game. That’s why he looked good in mop up duty last year. That’s why they benched Tyrod last year, that’s why Peterman is the starter now. The issue is, that also led to some of the picks. Hopefully he learns from the mistakes and doesn’t end up having guys jump routes and rip balls up to the Defense.

I think Peterman is the starter now because he out-played AJ McCarron and Allen isn't ready.

Whether Peterman can execute that quick read and deliver passing game behind a horrid OL, to mediocre WR who can't gain separation and who drop too many balls, and with defenses doing their best to bait and confuse him remains to be seen.  We'll hope he can.

People will say I'm crazy but Peterman's style  has more than a  little Brady DNA in it, in his fast reads and fast release-times... TB always had a knock about his arm strength too, but he actually has way more ball velocity now than when he started, you CAN build armstrength

He could really surprise.  Maybe.

 I agree.

I think this OL is very bad, and the WR's aren't that good either. Either QB is going to be 'set up to fail' behind this OL.

Right now, Peterman is likely to fail 'less', but he still is being set up to fail....They are saving Allen from a disaster though.

People don't forget about Brady (by the way, who are all the superstars that were late draft picks or undrafted?  I got Romo and Warner and that's it)

But the smart money plays the probabilities.  The probability of a late-round pick becoming a servicable starter much less a superstar, is very very low.

The probability of a 1st or 2nd round pick becoming a superstar is lower than most people think, but it's higher than the above.

Pocket poise and the ability to make subtle moves to avoid pressure are also part of what makes Brady such a good QB.  Peterman has yet to show this under regular season game speeds against NFL caliber players with complex coverage and pressure schemes.  There is a long way to go before they should be mentioned in the same post for the purposes of comparison.

It's laughable that you're comparing this situation to Ben...

First off, you were wrong that he started the season as the Steelers Qb.

Second, that Steelers team was LOADED.  They had Ben as a game manager, throwing about 20 passed per game, he didn't throw more than 30 once his rookie season.

Röthlisberger was putrid in his first SB

I get this, I do, but... Since it means nothing, which I agree, why delay the inevitable when starting experience is all Allen needs. Isn't it better to give him that in a season where the wins aren't expected or matter as much?

For a couple reasons. First of all McDermott has preached an open competition since day 1 and there is no argument to be made that Peterman didn't win the competition. Part of the culture change means building that best man wins mentality and Peterman was the best man this offseason. More importantly our schedule the first three weeks is punishing and Allen showed in the Bengals game he isn't ready to face that kind of pressure. Maybe Peterman isn't either but if you hurt his development it doesn't matter in the long run. Plus we might as well see what our long term backup can do in a few games. This season is a wash. Next season the fun really begins.

Of course higher draft picks have higher odds to be better! But then, once the draft is done, it's done. Time to evaluate what's in front of you by how they play. And as for superstar players, I didn't write QBs but players. But even so, Brady, Warmer, Romo: that's quite a trio right there! Warner was trowing cans in a grocery, out of football... hard to overtake that storyline. It beats a 5 INT first half.

That being said, I support Nate and all but yes still thinks Allen is the future here. And hopefully an elite franchise QB type of future! I would have been way more excited and on the edge to watch Josh start but will still support the team, QB and coaches to the fullest.

Do you think Peterman will do better or worse?  I'd take something like that in a heartbeat. Peterman will redeem himself and prove he belongs in the league.

Better. I don't undestand your first post, maybe rhetoric

  • 26CornerBlitz changed the title to Week 1: Ravens Game Preparation - Nathan Peterman Named Starting QB

What a poor decision to announce the starter today.  What would Belichick have done?  He would have told the media and the fans that they'd find out on game day.   Why give Baltimore even the slightest hint, much less a definite statement, of whom to prepare for?

They would just prepare for both and it's not that big of a deal for them with each of them being inexperienced QBs.

Nate won the job.  All this preaching about "the process" becomes bull **** to the team if this isn't the result.

Josh had little shot to win it at the beginning of OTA's but closed the gap pretty significantly.

My hope is this isn't a lost season because I believe Daboll can get the most out of what we have on Offense.  I keep thinking that the Patriots have never had a truly elite receiving corps (sans Randy Moss)  -- the system brought out the best in players like Welker, Troy Brown, Edelman.   They did have Gronk which is a huge advantage and safety blanket.

Nate has trouble when the first read isn't there and when he has to throw to his right.  He doesn't anticipate d-back breaks on the ball for intermediate routes and doesn't always place the deep ball well.  That said, he's accurate in the short area, he has improved his arm strength, he's got some mobility and athleticism, he can move the pocket.  These are all things Daboll has seen and will avoid (weaknesses) and build upon (strengths).  There is enough here to win games if the Bills are aces on D and special teams-- which is possible.  Nate is also the best of the 3 options for the current state of this OL.

I also like the idea of Josh being the scout team QB for a few weeks.  The D will never face a stronger arm in the game..so it may be a good look.

So yeah-trying to look at the positive here.  I still don't think this is a year where the Bills contend for the post-season, but this coaching staff is good enough to prove me wrong.

How was Peterman supposed to escape pressure in the Chargers game when he had pressure coming from all angles? Not to mention no receivers were getting open. The whole team left him out to dry.

He isn't a statue at all. He can move in the pocket pretty well. He's not a speed burner but he's not slow either.

I just hope the team gives him a little better chance this time around. That is a murderer's row defense to start the schedule.

Peterman reminds me a little of Alex Smith. I really think if Dabol does this thing right, Peterman might be pretty good. I really don’t think it’s a downgrade from Tyrod. I think KB will be the happiest player in the locker room. I hope on the first drive against Baltimore we try a 40 yard shot down field, just to show them we will push it with Nate. I’m very happy for the kid.

I initially predicted 9-7 with a wild card birth.  After this announcement? 7-9

These might as well be the same result. Now that we've broken the drought I don't care about meaningless playoff berths where we have no real chance to win the whole thing. We aren't going to be good this year. That's what happens when you have $50 million in dead cap. We're gearing up for 2019 when our young cornerstones will have matured and we'll have $65 million in cap space. I won't be mad if we completely tank this year and get a top 3 pass rusher in the draft. I'm well past the point of rooting for 8-8 seasons.

Like the following perhaps or maybe just take a sack instead of throwing the ball up for grabs.
