Yes I want some spending to go down. Spend on guys like Shady and avoid guys like Dareus. That's not really comparable, they are given x amount per year to spend, they cant save and bank cap space every year. They can be fiscally responsible and not backload deals or give huge long term ones, but they arent really getting into debt by using the available space. As for will they use it and make some signings, guess that depends on who is available from the Panthers next offseason.....

OK, that would probably end badly...... 9 hours ago, ScottLaw said: Extend who? They have no player worth paying loads of cash to for an extension. I expect them to be aggressive in FA next year on offense because they will absolutely need to be, IMO. They'll have the money to do it. Having all that cap space next year doesn't mean they have to use it next year, or the majority of it. They could roll over a nice chunk into 2020, and use that to extend some guys, then roll the remainder of that over to the next year, so forth and so on. If they start spending big right away, they'll face some tough roster decisions in 3-5 years, when players on rookie contracts now come due for new deals, especially if Allen pans out. Having some considerable cap money to roll over each year would help to alleviate that issue.

We don’t really have any major players due for extension. With that being said, is it Beane’s/McDermott’s M.O. to drop a lot of FA’s? That doesn’t feel like it’s part of their process for building a team, but they have made moves (Star, Hyde). Maybe they haven’t so far because they haven’t had the money, I don’t know. I guess I just don’t know what to expect They still have a lot of work on building and maintaining the roster. As noted in the thread, there are a lot of their own players with contracts expiring, and they still have some holes. In addition to the usual back-fill--signing veterans or current depth players whose contracts are expiring, I would guess they will be a little more active than they were this year, but more focused on the O. The big splashes were Star and Murphy. I could see them shelling money out on KB, trying to improve the O-line, and solving (longer term) the other CB position. I think this will be the last season for Kyle and Zo. Other changes will depend on how some players perform this year (Guys like Clay and Lawson, for example). Given what Brandon has said about the cap, I do not foresee them getting into "Cap Hell" again.

Do you think there's any chance he makes it to FA. Certainly seems like a guy you have to find a way to retain no matter what.
Logic
I don't believe that they will spend like drunken sailors. Beane did a lot of hard work getting the Bills OUT of cap hell and I don't think they're eager to return. I also think they'll be mindful of the fact that they need to stay in good cap shape to be able to retain their own homegrown talent in the coming years. That being said, I DO expect them to secure a few "big ticket items" on the offensive side of the ball to help out their young quarterback. Maybe an o-lineman or two and a quality receiver. Even this year, when they said they'd be very limited players in free agency, they signed Lotulelei and Murphy to good sized contracts as well as Vontae Davis and Chris Ivory. And this was in a year where they were consciously trying to save money. So looking ahead to NEXT year? Yeah, I think they'll spend some coin. Not an irresponsible amount, but some. Between the full slate of draft picks, the clean cap sheet, and the large amount of money they'll have for free agency, I expect them to make a big leap in terms of personnel next offseason. Minnesota's got some serious decisions to make next offseason, as they have to decide who to re-sign among Diggs, Anthony Barr, Sheldon Richardson, and Danielle Hunter, and they've only got ~$20M in cap space once the cap goes up. 20 minutes ago, SoCal Deek said: Don’t spend much of anything until you know that you know that you know you’ve got a QB. GunnerBill
I forgot about Diggs. He would certainly be a nice get and as you say the Vikings have some tough cap decisions coming down the road. I think Richardson is a rental so he will go but they probably lose at least one of the other 3...... they feel like a team that is a bit "all in" on 2018. As for your other two suggestions - the tackle from Carolina could certainly be a fit on the right side. Not as sure on Shaq Mason... think it depends what the run scheme ends up looking like. If they become much more of a man scheme again then he is a potential fit.
baskingridgebillsfan
they will have the money . I have looked over the potential free agents and unless something unexpected happens there won't be a ton of guys you would want to throw big money at. On the other hand with all that money there is no excuse to have any major holes on the team. They should have league average or better at every position. The are going to need to straighten out the wide receiver position for sure. Add a corner and a olineman,( I am interested to see how the interior works out this year, right tackle has been and issue forever) , maybe in the draft. Decide if hughes should stay or invest in a pass rusher. There should be a couple of very good pass rushers on the market. If Allen develops this team is ready to make the players for the next several years. 9 hours ago, Thurman#1 said: I'd expect them to start signing their own guys, for one thing. I don’t see Benjamin generating the numbers to merit a big contract with our current offensive situation. In regards to cap hell, we should be able to easily front load contracts that are easier to get out of. You can spend money efficiently. Being able to go out and get 3 solid FA offensive lineman, maybe a WR, and a OLB would be amazing and shouldn’t offset the chemistry too much. Then still roll some money over to pay White and others when they are due. Good things to come hopefully

It seems to me Beane has a certain price for every position and person and he does not at this time appear to chase to far outside his range. I would expect that to continue with them looking specifically at younger, talented players that are hard working. I would not not expect to see any high maintenance - me first - type WR divas (ala Dez) or Mario Williams top of the salary structure players, but I could see them scooping up several middle of the road FA like Hyde and Poyer to supplement their draft plans. Max Fischer
I'd like to take a look at how the Patriots were built. Year after year they find "mid-level" guys who step up and do their jobs. Adam727
The Bills had about $100mil in cap space next year before spending on FA this year (McCarron, Star, Murphy, Davis, Ivory, etc) Now Spotrac has them closer to $50mil. (probably more like 60-65mil after the salary cap goes up and we roll over some $$) But that's how quickly $50mil can be spent. I'd expect next year's FA to be similar to this year. corta765
Yes and No. Yes because I see them doing what the Rams did with Goff adding some OL and for sure another solid WR. The defense is relatively set minus perhaps another pass rusher or LB at this point. So I think you will see smart but aggressive signing for targeted players like Hyde, Star, & Murphy the past two years. For insistence a guy like Randall Cobb who is potentially available in 2019 would be a nice guy to pair with Benjamin, hopefully Zay, and another drafted WR. That will cost some dough though. Bradin Cooks is another who is a FA in 2019 who could do well. Either way they will spend money on what they want. No because I don't think you will see a spending spree like the Bills did in 2015 offseason which hurt this team down the road to now. This group is too smart to make that mistake and they've showed it so far. Beane told Terry when he took the job he would have the cap cleaned in 2 years. Well 2019 its clean they aren't going to spend 80 million of it and wreck it. 26 minutes ago, Commonsense said: Diggs is nice but I’m not sure he a true number 1, for what he is going to get paid i’d be hesitant. FrankoElTanko
I feel like they will extend KB (the FO drafted him, traded for him and so far has only gotten one season out of him)... W/$90mil they wont pressure the franchise with two needs at WR. I feel like we will most definitely take a go at one of (whomever is) the top RT available or top 3 interior guys at OL. I also feel like we may look at pass rush in FA as well. TM acquisition this season shows we sill spend money outside of popular opinion on the DE position. I also feel like they will look to add to their TE. I do not know if they would move on from Clay but I do think they make a run.

Yeah, I think they will take a long-term view and not rush to get into cap jail. But, like the draft, you have to see what the options are before you decide what they're worth and what you want to spend. Still should be plenty to spend, just do it wisely.
