Roseanne Show cancelled by ABC after racist tweet

Recommended Posts

Didn't hear what she said nor do I really care...

But this climate we have in America now sucks.  Say something controversial or offensive or what someone doesn't want you to say and kiss your job or reputation or career goodbye...

Not very American.

I can’t wait to hear what Hollywood’s sweetheart and Oscar host, Jimmy Kimmel has to say about this tonight. Maybe he will bring back his blackface Oprah mocking character for the night...or maybe they can play the game he came up with, Hungry Hungry Oprahs, with the brown hippo caricatures during the monologue. Gotta love selective outrage and celebrity hypocrisy. Rosanne is an idiot and a horrible person, but there are many more that get a pass because they are left wingers.

Roseanne is a "left winger."

I assume she was shooting for some type of joke with this tweet.  Or was she drunk?

Well, whatever.

She hasnt been a left winger in a long time. She's been in the right-wing conspiracy game for a while. She's been going after jews and reposting QAnon stuff as well.

Soooooo.... for the most part not really true. And definitely not the place to make that point.

Going back to the HBO Rodney Dangerfield specials, this sweathog never made me laugh once, until today. I've been laughing all day long, what a trainwreck!

Right?  She was one of the worst from those Young Comedian years.  I never thought she funny or understood the popularity of her show.....but I still think it’s ridiculous to cancel a TV show over a Twitter.

But as someone said earlier, you live by the big yap, you die by the big yap.   Unless you’re Trump and get elected President.

Well I'm easily offended because I'm a good person.  I'm really sensitive about racism to prove that I'm one of the good ones and secretly terrified I may get accused of being a racist.  Its important to build up your tolerance equity.

Olberman has been suspended for political giving; fired for his views but mostly fired because he is so far left he can't attract an audience.  I don't think it's a double standard.

Roseanne will get hired by Fox for a news/comedy show; Keith gets hired by ESPN because he will work for peanuts now, he will attract viewers for maybe three months and they need some help as they circle the drain.

Who cares really.  The Roseanne show would have run out of ideas about 10 episodes into next year...

Pride may be a sin, but I admit I’m proud I had ZERO idea she was still/back on TV. Has this been going on long? The last thing I remember about her was the National Anthem debacle.

They brought her back to try and draw an audience they could otherwise not attract.  It worked --#1 rated show for a few weeks.  Then she loses a day to her addiction and just happens to have a keyboard in front of her.  Kind of like TBD posters on certain days.....

Huh?

Sorry I've been out of the US for a while now... is Olberman now a racist???

So, you don't think what she said was racist?

Of course I think what she said was racist.

My point is that when you have a career in Hollywood, and if you start saying offensive things about Barack Obama or liberalism in general, you are putting your career at risk.

Whereas if you bash Donald Trump or his supporters or causes they believe in, you are then a hero. Don't believe me? Watch "Grey's Anatomy".

Shocking that this thread is even taking a PPP turn (sarcasm).

It’s not that complicated. Don’t say racist stuff and you won’t have to worry about the reprecussions. Even Roseanne doesn’t think that what she said should be defended: https://people.com/tv/roseanne-barr-breaks-silence-after-shows-cancellation-ambien/ It isn’t a political matter or witch hunt. The story isn’t “Roseanne got fired because ABC is run by a bunch of liberals.” The story is “Roseanne got fired for saying dumb, racist stuff.” Let’s not lose sight of that...

Let's also not lose sight of the fact that this is the land of false equivalencies and the "yeah, well what about..." defense. Left wingnuts like Olbermann ranting about politics and looking like an ass is a FAR cry from tone deaf idiots like Roseanne making blatant, PERSONAL racist remarks. Advertisers have shown ZERO tolerance for that recently and, as popular as Roseanne's show was, Disney and its vast network have other advertiser-supported shows to worry about now and in the future.

The current trend is for liberals to smear advertisers reputation so they flee a show/network to save their image. It works because it's easy to switch to "safer" ways to market their products. The left tried boycotting but had neither the will nor participation to effect change.

On the other hand, Conservatives just choose to stop watching, causing declines for ESPN, NFL, etc. These networks can't solve the problem of boycotts as easily, so they walk the tight-rope. And since the majority of their industry leans left, it's not like they have much choice in the content, either. They can only hope to enact policies that tone down the liberal rhetoric from their shows, to a level most people can tolerate.

That is why I believe it feels like a double standard, because there is one... the left just needs to give their allies an excuse, while the right is fighting the nature of the beast.

Parody, mockery and satire are forms of comedy.  If you can't tell the difference between them and comparing an African American an ape in 2018, head on back to 1960 where you belong.

That’s why Roseanne shouldn’t have been crucified for her Hitler baking cookies bit, which she did for a satire magazine called “Heeb.” I say “shouldn’t have” but her history of bigoted and racist remarks disqualifies her from that benefit of the doubt. Which is a shame because satire is such a powerful tool and people, especially younger people, would be well served to remember that.

Not to give her too much credit, but this is about as good of an apology as anyone could give. Takes full responsibility for her actions, and makes it publicly known exactly why what she did was wrong.

If more people were willing to take this responsibility for their actions, and be this aware, we'd be in a much better place as a nation.

Dressing in blackface to mock someone in the name of comedy is OK?  I guess I didn't realize that and thought blackface was off limits.  I must not be up to speed in 2018.  And I clearly stated that Rosanne is a horrible person and did not for a second defend her ignorant, racist comments.

Nice try.  If you don't know what black face is, then I suppose your take could be relevant.  Kimmel also dressed up as Karl Malone and Charles Barkley.  None of them were done in "black face".  Mimicking or parodying a celebrity is a hell of a lot different then the origins of black face and why that particular thing is no longer acceptable.  Why the !@#$ does that even need to be explained?

And thanks for making me defend friggin' Jimmy Kimmel.

I still want to know why celebrities even bother with twitter.  One wrong comment destroys everything.  Sometimes it's deserved (here), other times it's not.  They have to walk a tight rope that's thinner than dental floss on there.  It's not worth it.

Humanity would be better off if we killed social media asap.

Agreed.  And I'll add athletes to that, as well; especially young athletes with legitimate shots to go pro.  Once it's out there, it's out there forever.  Just ask Josh Allen.

The easy answer is: It's part of the business. Being a celebrity is about staying relevant and in the spotlight. Social Media makes that very easy. It's basically a required part of the job in order to keep pace with the competition. The problem is, these celebrities arent hiring PR people to do their tweeting for them.

The internet could be what ends up destroying humanity

It needs to go back to what it was I tended for. Buying thing without having to get dressed and leave your home, watching home videos of people or animals falling down and or getting hurt, getting scammed by African Royalty, Netflix, and easily accessible pornography. Everything else is just leading to the world becoming a worse place.
