I do think a decent backup QB helps in camp and helps identify players to maybe keep in preseason games. Also, if Allen is out for the season I agree, but what about finishing a game where a QB goes down or for 1 or 2 during the season? I'm not advocating for a high $ backup, but I think the position has more to it than many fans believe.

Picture the scenario where the Bills are 4-0 and kicking everyone's ass, and (God forbid) QB1 sprains his ankle, or is in the concussion protocol for a few weeks. Are people saying "just tank the season, we have no chance"? You have to have someone who can muddle through and not lose 3-4 games by themself.

JohnBonhamRocks
Feel like Mayfield gets or competes for a starting job. Wentz either competes or is a bridge QB for a team drafting a rookie QB high. Brissett is by far the best option followed by Rush, Minshew, Mariota, and Bridgewater, in that order imho. QB2 is important for this team, too, with Allen’s style of play plus coming off his UCL injury.
dgrochester55
I would have thought that Mariota would be perfect until I found out how he left the Falcons. I would go for Huntley or Trubisky. Ideally, the backup quarterback should have some mobility like Allen so that the offense can use their entire playbook.

He is the man but in terms of neutrality, Mahomes edges him due to the accolades and success post-season (Coaching plays a huge part in that). Josh however is undoubtably more valuable to the franchise he plays than most QB’s out there… Without Josh this team is barely scraping 6/7 wins. Donezo without Josh period. However, you would like to remain competitive to at least stand a chance… What about Minshew?

It's hard to imagine this team doing anything at all without Allen. Get another lineman or WR and a JAG backup. Ask polian, you don’t want to lose your job being unprepared. But the real issue is you don’t want to lose the whole season if Allen is out a half or a game. You owe it to the entire team to be prepared for short term issues with josh. Every team goes down without your 1, except for the amazing 49ers last year with mr irrelevant at qb. Home field can come down to one game , so if josh is out for just a game or two, your gm better be prepared or you waste another year, millions of $, and its an inexcusable mistake as a gm to think a qb will play every down, every year. You are paying miller 120 mil $, to win now, not be set up to just blow a year off. Man, the AFC is murder this year. Mahomes, Burrows,Allen, Rodgers probably (He is stupid coming to this conference), Watson, Jackson, Tua, jimmy G in Los Vegas, Herbert, Russel Wilson in Denver. This conference is absolutely loaded with qb talent. Beane cant ignore the backup qb position , again ask polianm who lost his job when manning was out unexpectedly. I would try to get someone like jocoby brisett if he is free. He can at least win a couple of games. Mitch looked really much worse than i ever expected and lost his job to a rookie from PITT! That’s bad! Has to be someone , dalton is going to the Panthers , but I don’t think Barkley is enough and if Beane ignores it , you just know it will bite us! Hey, maybe bring in the qb from the winning team in the xfl, or something creative. Maybe Matt Ryan would humble himself which might be a decent guy on the sideline as well since the colts cut him. Not the 6th round, but just before in round 5 are 2 more recent names you might recognize: Tyreek Hill, Stefon Diggs. Some prospects are late bloomers. Some suffered injuries in college that knocked them down a few notches. Some were in bad systems or small schools. Some needed a higher level of coaching. Hopefully, our personnel dept will recognize potential that can be developed. Bennett doesn’t have the physical traits needed for NFL football. It would be a huge gamble and probably a waste of a draft pick- a valuable commodity when building and maintaining a roster.
