Chiefs flexed to Saturday (Jags-Titans too)

Pretty big deal. I'm very surprised they did this. Beat the Bengals and Raiders beat Chiefs and we clinch the 1 seed. Or if we lose tomorrow and KC wins, 3 seed is basically a lock. Either way we can rest starters.

nice advantage for us, though the most likely scenario is both us and the chiefs win and this won't matter.

will be 1 of those.

Giants are locked into the 6 seed and have nothing to play for.

I'm shocked they didn't put the jags game Sunday night.

NFL probably hoping for a bills win tomorrow so they can put Baltimore Cincinnati on SNF.

NBC prefers Packers-Lions over TEN-JAX in the event the Bills lose to Cincy (ratings, you know: Ten and JAX are small markets).

could Pats-Bills be the Sunday night game, then… ?

only if the Bills win on MNF because then both #1 seed (Bills) and Wild Card Berth (Patriots) are in play

If the Bills win, SNF will probably be Baltimore-Cincy as that would be for the division. Plus, if KC lost Saturday, the Bills wouldn't have a need to win Sunday and could rest their starters (angering Miami). If the Bills lost to Cincy, the Packers-Detroit would probably be the SNF game. Also, a slight chance it could be Philly-NYG. Those are really the only three options.

nice advantage for us, though the most likely scenario is both us and the chiefs win and this won't matter.

Bunch of scenarios:

Bills win tomorrow:

Week 18:

KC loss, Bills win, Bills clinch 1st seed

KC win, Bills win, Bills clinch 1st seed

KC loss, Bills loss, Bills clinch 1st seed

KC win, Bills loss, Bills clinch 2nd seed

Bills lose tomorrow:

Week 18:

Bills win, KC loss, Cinci loss, Bills clinch 1st seed

Bills win, KC wins, Cinci loss, Bills clinch 2nd seed

Bills win, KC loss, Cinci wins, Bills clinch 2nd seed

Bills win, KC wins, Cinci wins, Bills clinch 3rd seed

Bills loss, KC loss, Cinci loss, Bills clinch 3rd seed

Bills loss, KC wins, Cinci wins, Bills clinch 3rd seed

Bills loss, KC loss, Cinci wins, Bills clinch 3rd seed

Bills loss, KC win, Cinci loss, Bills clinch 3rd seed

So technically we have more scenarios to get 2nd seed than 1st or 3rd if we lose tomorrow and win against the Pats.

If we beat the Pats week 18:

3rd seed likely plays against the Ravens

2nd seed likely plays against the Dolphins

Who plays them likely depends on our game tomorrow. (If we win, Ravens and Bengals can swap positions with a Ravens win week 18 over the Bengals.).

AFC is a bit more complicated than the NFC, as the AFC has no seeds locked in, while the NFC has two.

Here are the teams that can still win each particular seed:

AFC

1 - BUF, KC, CIN
2 - BUF, KC, CIN
3 - BUF, KC, CIN, BLT
4 - JAX, TEN
5 - CIN, LAC, BLT
6 - CIN, LAC, BLT
7 - JAX, NE, MIA, PIT

If the Bills win on MNF, the Bills and Chiefs can't be the 3 seed and Cincinnati can't be the 1 or 2 seed.

If the Bengals win on MNF, the Ravens can't be the 3 seed.

NFC

1 - PHI, SF, DAL
2 - PHI, SF, MIN, DAL
3 - SF, MIN
4 - TB
5 - PHI, DAL
6 - NYG
7 - SEA, DET, GB

In the NFC, the NY Giants will go to either SF or MIN, while Tampa Bay will host either PHI or DAL in the Wild Card Round.

Let us all hope not. So tired of the night games.

Milton, I thought I was one of the few.  Everyone gets so excited about Primetine, but when it’s SNF, MNF, or TNF it means I’m either falling asleep in the 2nd half and watching the rest in the morning or I’m miserable the next day.  I get up for the gym and work at 4-5am everyday.

I realize most people get up at 6pm, but my body clock won’t even allow it.

Surprises me. Surely it’d be fairer to have the Chiefs, Bills and/or Bengals to play at the same time? As it is the latter two will know what they have to do heading into their week eighteen game, or whether they can rest their starters.

Titans-Jaguars make sense though, purely on the importance of the game, it should have been a lock for SNF but… markets. Though I think I’m right in saying the Jags could still make the play offs even if they lose, as long as the Pats, Dolphins and Steelers do the same, winning the tiebreak on Conference record?

My guess is the Lions and Packers. NBC (especially Collingsworth) loves to kiss Rodgers ass. Plus, it's a win and in scenario for GB along with Detroit having a shot to get in as well. Ravens and Bengals could be the game if the North is still up for grabs. Giants are locked in at #6. Next week is a glorified exhibition game for them. I doubt that game goes to SNF.

Surely he would suit up if the division title was on the line.

Given that you no longer get a week off for winning the division the difference between winning the division and being the top wild card and going on the road is negligible. Honestly, if you'd rather play Jacksonville than LA you're better off losing. If my choice is playing Lamar before he's ready to potentially win a home game v. the Chargers or giving him another week to possibly play in Jacksonville instead I probably sit him.

You are correct, they can lose and get in if everyone else also loses.

Have to admit, I'm a bit sad that tonight is the last Monday night game. No more Thursday night games and only one Sunday left of regular season football. Really hoping the bills get to the superbowl this year

There will be a monday night game wildcard weekend!

The NFL introduced the 2 Saturday games this year, and sacrificed a lot of the competitive balance in favor of ratings.

Tennessee and especially Jacksonville aren't exactly "sexy" teams in terms of ratings, so if you were NBC you're probably going to want to really try to sell the NFL on having another game, even if it has less dramatic playoff implications than "win or go home". NBC is secretly rooting for the Bills tonight since they want BAL-CIN next week on SNF. Huge ratings.

Titans and Jags is for the division. That game definitely should be in primetime. Hope the Jags win it. Lawrence is an exciting player to watch to play.

it does considering Ravens were on SNF last nite and two weeks in a row is not likely...

That doesn't matter. NBC wants the best game, both in terms of ratings and playoff implications. DET-GB is good for ratings, but if SEA wins earlier in the day, DET has nothing to play for, which is going to anger SEA and make GB happy. CIN-BAL is both good for ratings and would be for the division title. That is why NBC prefers it but is willing to go the other route if BUF loses tonight.

It is in primetime. Plus, the NFL is catering to the average fan, not the hardcore one. That is why they play on Saturday instead of Sunday.

No other explanation for this. It’s an odd choice for the Saturday game to be sure.

Ratings. The NFL wants State Farm in a stand-alone game for the whole nation to watch.

SD if they win gets the #5 seed. So if BAL is #6, they play CIN, BUF, or KC in the divisionals.

Bills win tonight

Chiefs loss Sat

Jets Beat Skyler Thompson led Fins

Bills play a half then the Backups come in and beat NE.

NE and MIA out of playoffs. Pitt get in to go play WC weekend in KC.

Bills get another week to rest their starters

If SEA wins earlier in the day against the Rams, then DET has no motivation as they are out. It would be either GB or SEA for the 7th seed, as even if DET won on SNF, they would lose to SEA in the head-to-head.

Correct - even if the game doesn’t mean anything ton buffalo, NE with a win and in would be a big storyline. Plus if we lose tonight we could still be playing for the 1 or 2 seed of kc/cinci lose or if cinci loses
