I can't believe the love-fest for this guy.

Do any of you remember 2 years ago when it seemed like half this board thought that it'd be a great idea to give this guy 12M+ a year?

Then he went to MIAMI AND THE JETS for 2 years!

This guy is average at best.

I think half this board is confusing Shaq Lawson with Shaquille O'neal.

Just because they have the same first name, doesn't mean they'll have the same results.

He got more money and left buffalo after great play for us on the field because we couldn't afford him.

yes, he went to poverty franchises... hope he learned a lesson -- money isn't everything.

What does this post do to prove your point though? Nadda..

Star is getting cut and we likely carry 9 DL.

For once, I love the deep rotation, because if I’m McDermott - my sole focus for Von Miller these next 2-3 years is too simply make sure he’s rested & healthy for the playoffs.

I also think Epenesa will be cut or traded this summer even if he looks good in camp again. Too smallish of a player and seems like a bust unfortunately.

Speaking of rotation, I know that McD and Frazier seem to value this concept but you don't sign a guy like Von Miller to be a situational pass rusher. He's definitely getting 60% of the snaps minimum each game which means a lot of these other guys will have to make the most of their time on the field.

Also going to be a juggling act each week in terms of the inactive list again and which both Lawson and Phillips will have to embrace during their 2nd tour of duty here if they are in fact on the final roster.

As just pointed out on Twitter:

The two leading Bills in 2019 in sacks, TFL, and QB hits? Jordan Phillips and Shaq Lawson.

These two guys were also beloved locker room presences that brought a ton of energy and humor and fun to the team.

Considering they’re probably signing for vet minimum or close, these are just excellent additions for what they will bring both on and off the field.

Edit: add in Tim Settle, who seems to be a silly, high energy guy, and the locker room is gonna be a riot this season.

I completely disagree.

This isn’t Nick Bosa.  It’s Von Miller at age 33.

We have a team that shouldn’t be relying on him in most of our games.

We want him to be the difference maker in the playoffs for the next 2-3 years.

You make damn sure he’s healthy, rested and ready to go every year come playoff time.

We’re paying him 17.5 per to win Super Bowls, not beat the Dolphins in October.

One thing I will say, he did a great job as a spy on the edge against Lamar.  He can really help stop the run.

I almost feel like we will have two completely different lines for run and pass.  And while I know that's normal, I mean a COMPLETELY different 4 guys out there for each.  It's crazy

We could afford him... the year he left we picked up Diggs and extended Tre.

The post proves my point from 2 years ago saying that he wasnt worth it and sucks.

Shaq and Phillips coming back home remind me of when Pats players used to ball out get paid by another team then 2-3 years later come back to the Patriots on dirt cheap deals and be productive players. I am all for both signings. Kick the tires on two guys you know fit the system for dirt cheap.

It sounds cheesy, but I think the presence of Settle is going to help Tremaine Edmunds on and off the field.

Phillips and Shaq with Ed as well. It’s a cool dynamic that I will be happy to watch.

Well for one,  O'Neal played basketball.

Shaq Lawson is honestly a great football player stuck on a poverty franchise. He will play well for the bills as he did before.

He is not a great football player.  He largely underperformed his first three years, had a big year in McD's rotation system in year 4, cashed in and proceeded to revert to form.  He could be a useful rotational piece for the Bills in their system if he is motivated to play.  That is his ceiling.  Not great.

The thing with Shaq is, if you expect him to be an excellent pass rusher and you pay him that way (and/or draft him in the first round), you will be disappointed. But if you want a really solid player, who is excellent against the run, and can get after the QB a bit, he can be a great asset to have. You just have to use his skills properly (rotationally) and not expect (or pay for) big sack totals.

I'm excited to see a happy, motivated Shaq as part of the DE rotation.

I'll agree with you there.

I just find it funny with the love-fest back then, and it's the same thing now. But this time, he'll be paid reasonably.

Exactly right.

If you’re hoping for 1st round production or paying him to be a sack artist, you’ll be disappointed.

However, a good edge setting DE who can pitch in five sacks and who brings juice to the locker room is a great rotational depth piece to have.

Says a lot that he and Phillips were willing to come back for probably peanuts. Guess we don’t need to fire McDermott after all 😆

He was. I think most of the hate came because people thought he didn’t live up to his draft position. Where he was drafted is not his fault. He was solid against the run.

I do agree that his snap count in Sept/Oct will be drastically different than what we see during the stretch run in Nov/Dec/Jan if anything to keep him fresh and hopefully avoid injury.

But his deal is essentially only a 2 year one and still can't pay a guy $17+ a year for 50% of the snaps or less overall.

meh. Wasn’t a fan of his when he was here, his best year was his contract year, got way overpaid to leave and -imo- an I-Me-My guy.
maybe he’s matured, but I’m guessing it’ll be between him and AJ at final cutdown and I’m going with Epenesa.

True! The best year was indeed a contract year. The good news is……this is also a contract year!

Him and Von are basically dominant run defenders on the edge.

We got killed last year by those outside tosses. These boys set the edge and attack...

SB OR Bust baby

Groot ,AJ,Shaq and Von at DE with Boogie being able to go inside or out.

We were a #1 D in many categories and we exchanged Hughes n Addison for Miller n Shaq. To me that's a big time upgrade

I don’t know…Shaq Lawson of 2019 would be a great signing.  He hasn’t played very well the past two seasons and has been released three times over the past year.  He’ll be a reserve this season so maybe the scheme will help him out.  Not a bad player to have as your 5th DE

The sheer numbers make me wonder who gets traded before the season. It’s a very Beane thing to do, some of these guys will have value, even if it’s a late round pick. Beane likes those to move around in the draft.

He is a free agent, and given all the other signings, it's looking as though there's No Room at the Inn

Epenesa, Basham, Rousseau, Miller, Lawson

Lotulelei, Jones, Oliver, Phillips, Settle

That's a helluva room.

Doesn't seem to leave room for Addison or Hughes though

People in this thread are acting like Phillips and Shaq signed for 10M apiece. The top 2 most productive DL we had in 2019 just came back on what are likely small 1 yr contracts as depth, this is not only great indication that the team is a place people miss when they leave, it shows how far we have come in regards to talent.
