Provide you(r) own Hot Take Monday [edit]

Just look at how deep our DBs were playing on the 25 yard pass to Kelce on the play before their tying FG.

Clearly, McD and Frazier were defending a Hail Mary long play instead of defending the crucial yards to a FG.

It was one of the few plays that Mahomes didn’t have to scramble. Kelce was untouched at the line, and all alone to our 40.

SOFT defense.   What were the coaches thinking???

For me, this game was marked more by sadness than anger. Maybe it's because I'm older; I'm not so sure.  What made it worse is that I was NOT haunted by that aura of "same old Bills," in that I really did expect them to hang on. After the last GREAT TD pass by Allen, I ran upstairs and was hugging my fiancee, yelling "Super Bowl."

The sadness and pain that I feel is not primarily self centered. It isn't even centered on Josh Allen either. At the rate he is going he is sure to be one of the all time greats, and will make hundreds of millions of dollars. The world is his.

My sorrow is for the Bills Fans in general but especially those on TSW. So many of us have so many quirks but we are legit. Look at the thought, time, money, and effort we have put into being Bills fans! My crew and I were checking the weather in OP for next week during the game. Yes, the Super Bowl was ours, or so I thought.

I am going to stick to my guns, now more than ever. I NEVER thought I would see a QB this great on the Bills. He is easily even better than Kelly. Protecting him  and providing him with more and better weapons should be our top priorities!!!!! Will they be? I just don't know. :( They just might focus on the secondary but no matter what they do, I will still cheer for them!!!

In any event Bills Fans, walk tall. Many, many years ago, @SDSposted that he is more of a fan of Bills Fans than he is of the Bills. Seriously, this comment could really be 15 years old but I never forgot it, and I agree.

Somehow, some day, we will get there. NOBODY deserves it more than us.

GO BILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a friends who lost a father recently.  I feel similarly to you.  I wanted it not for myself, but for him.  And for all those who need a pick up in life, be it because of the death of a loved one, the sadness and isolation of the last couple of years, whatever.  It would have been so nice for so many people.  That part sucks.

Also, I refused to check the weather because I didn't want to jinx us.  Maybe I should have.  Although I admit with 13 second left I was thrilled to be going to the AFCCG a few miles from home next week.  Next year, I guess.

There was an unoccupied meadow in the middle of the field on the last two offense plays of regulation.

Not sure this is a "hot take" but McDermott should have gone for it on 4th-and-1 in the 3rd Q

how much autonomy does frazier have on those d calls? do the players really love and respond to him? if not, he needs to be fired just to send a message that they are doing something to try to fix what happened. if the players really do rally around him, there is nothing you can do.

but hard to believe there are no ramifications to a screw up as bad as we had last night. somebodies head should roll, but I kind of feel like it won't happen.

our corners covered well down the field for most of the game. the end of the game came down to scheming.

and not sure what the issue is that caused the chiefs to get so many yards after catch on the short throws throughout the game. that feels more like scheme than players also.

Firing somebody to "send a message" is a pretty reactionary take.  So is the "Somebodies head should roll" statement.

Can you give one example of a time when these tactics actually proved effective?

As for YAC - they're faster than we are, Man

We need a punter.  Haack probably cost us the PIT game, and he tried his best to lose us the Jets game.  Ask the Packers about the importance of not having your punter blow it for you.

One more time: the unblocked Steeler who blocked that punt was NOT on Haack.  And the unblocked 49er who blocked the Packers punt and FG was NOT on Bojo.

Those were ST unit errors, not punter errors.

Hot take? I'll sure have one.

I will be actively rooting for us to LOSE against Chiefs in the regular season, provided that it is so late in the season that either (i) we are locked for 1st round bye or close enough or (ii) we don't have a chance to finish ahead of them.

We are not likely to beat them twice a year so lets take a loss in regular season next time.

Depends on what you mean by "send a message."  Every time somebody is fired it's sending a message.

A Dungy Firing

A Joe Judge Firing

A Brian Flores Firing

A Anthony Lynn Firing

What's the difference?

The defense played soft. Not just the scheme, but tackling was absolutely atrocious. Addison and Hughes love doing this thing where they run around the quarterback and then are too slow and old to contain him in the pocket. Poyer was way too aggressive on Hill's long touchdown; he should have guided him out of bounds, not tried for a tackle. No one jammed Kelce on the line of scrimmage.

if you are gonna coach conservative and sometimes gutless, you HAVE TO take care of the details.  the whole idea of being conservative as a coach is to avoid mistakes, number one to avoid is idiot decisions and minimizing mistakes.

our d schematically has a weakness where any small error along the way can provide the opportunity for a positive play by the opponent, but we accept that in exchange for making big deep passes super super difficult.  we hope for pass rush from a vanilla mix of 4 down linemen, at great monetary expense buy keeping a lot of depth.

so w 13 seconds left, they walk away from what they do, they don't cover and instead they play sidelines.  and they rush 4, which is fewer guys back in coverage.  i honestly think our coaches just didn't know how many time outs the cheifs had.  this is a shocking inexcusable failure in leadership and management.  if it's on McD, he needs to get someone under him who will do this kind of thinking for him.  if it's on frazier, he's gotta go.  frankly, frazier has gotta go anyhow.

my hot take is someone somewhere along the chain in our coaching staff simply didn't know the shot in the biggest game of the season, and needs to walk.

Its evident even after spending endless resources we lack an impact player on defense in the front 7  Maybe a few more 1st rounders should do it  All we needed was negative play or two or we got nothing.  Bills went all in a D line rotation and still could not corral Mahomes. Were the same team I though we were  An ascending super human at qb and a bunch of Jags  That D rating just confirms how useless stats can be without context  Where was Diggs?

i agree, though as stated before, if the players really, really believe in the coaches, perhaps you don't make that decision. and there needs to be a better option. i am 70/30 on getting rid of frazier. though if it is totally on McD, i don't think we can fire the guy who leads the whole ship. he is a top 5 coach in a league where good HCs do not grow on trees.

i get that hill is too fast. he is the biggest weapon that sets them apart from us, and a part of the reason we had the ridiculous defensive scheme at the end. but those other guys had way too much space to run when catching those 1 or 2 yard passes. they didn't even need to make a move or go by anybody. they just had space that our offense is almost never able to create on those plays.

but andy reid is leagues and leagues above Daboll. no surprise one can dial up these plays and the other can't.

My hot take:

Our d-line didn't actually play as bad as some think. They were putting pressure on Mahommes but couldn't seal the deal with a sack. Not too many QB's have the ability to avoid the rush the way Mahommes did last night.

And the Chiefs are our new Patriots.

Mahomes did the same thing to the immortal TJ Watt.

i think we can't fire mcd because it's too much of a disruption, but if the last sequence was all on him, then he deserves it and is getting a second chance.

stealing an idea from yards per pass (goat twitter bills guy): a balanced and sound D was what you wanted in 2005, but that's not the case anymore.  we just need to get a real pass rusher in, upgrade where we can, and not over pay for barely jags like addison and houghs, edmunds, and back ups like mattlewitch and klien.  and of course star.  basically, get a couple play makers on D, and then just improve the O to the point where josh is working with a bag of toys like mahomes is.  a real OG, a real speed threat at wr, a real big wr, just any kind of upgrade that gives us what we don't have now.

the d that dominates awful nfl Os gave up 30 first downs to kc.  it's just a dumb place to invest your cap and picks (defensive breadth and depth, specifically).

It's pretty apparent where the weaknesses are on this team they say defense wins championships well they also lose them too & they lost this one for the team .

I get it you don't want to point fingers but the guys that are paid to be that guy in crunch time need to do just that & it didn't happen & i think some of it may be the scheme on the defensive side of the ball i would rather see a Jim Shwartz type of scheme very aggressive not sit back as much .

So although Frazier is a good coach i won't be sad to see him go i think a lot of the players on that side of the ball could do the job but how they only did 2 LBers i this was more of a weakness than a strength .

Maybe this loss will help to motivate then younger players like Rouseau & Basham to be better i think they have the potential to be really good & i know Beane will be on top of the draft & get some more talent to shore up the team as he always does !

Every on talks about needing a FA WR i think last night showed we don't . Sanders was a none factor the rest of the WR's came through when needed they blanketed the best one we had but he earned his check when he caught the 2 pointer & if Hodgins can be developed with the others Josh will get it to them he proved that !!

The Bills need a RB a DE along the lines of Watt & another good LBer with a D coach that is more aggressive !!

Here’s my hot take. Rosseau and Basham were drafted specifically for this game, but they didn’t show up. We need help at the corner position, but I’m not sold on it being a first round need. The officials don’t allow corners to play football anyway. They certainly aren’t letting us get away with anything versus KC. You need a pass rush to beat an elite QB in today’s NFL. We got to Mahomes, but not with the type of pressure that truly disrupts a QB. The Rams might have sent Brady straight to retirement with a great pass rush. Our biggest issue is the draft capital we spent on the line. I’m not sure how much more can be done to fix it.

It's a great point...2 Drafts...One 1st and two 2nd Rd picks at DE...I just don't know how smart it is to go back to that well again...

I think they'll look for vet help on the D-Line and look to turn this Offense into a completely unstoppable force in the Draft...O-Line, WR speed, and a feature RB to push Moss out...B-)

-Frazier is overrated and propped up by McD, the D's talent, and Josh

-If this exact game was in Buffalo they win because of being home

-Josh will win MVP next year because he is just going to be soo damn pissed off he is taking it the distance

-Goodbye Cole, Sanders, & Hughes. We have replacements and the cap space can be used elsewhere

-If they get a true CB2 stud pass rush issues are minimized.

-BB should be the new DC... ok that ones for laughs

We'll buy out McFloormatt, promote Daboll, and let Frazier go.  As we silently hire Brian Flores and shock and surprise nobody.

We'd need a pass rushing DC and McDermott doesn't pass rush which means turning the team over to Daboll and hiring Biran Flores to keep up that or Fangio.  We've gone as far as we can with preventable McFloormatt.

I get all the stuff about Frazier, and McD's tenacity, but my hot take is fire Daboll, today, before he takes the Giants job. 😀

Daboll is an average at best coordinator who has both benefitted from Allen's growth and success and also held him back. The play calling in the first half after the first drive was atrocious. 3rd and shorts consecutively not using Allen? One drive 3 runs and punting? If we're making better decisions there, I think the game result is different. You knew this would be a shootout and those drives gassed our defense.

People don't give enough credit sometimes to talent gravity. Look at Brady with Belichick, he leaves Patriots universe and you can literally almost see it. Reid and Mahomes same thing, Mahomes is enough a talent where his gravity has elevated Reid, before Reid was known as a good OC who couldn't get over the hump in the conference championship games. Mahomes gave him that bump.

Look at Daboll before the Bills; he was at Alabama who has 5-star athletes at every position and their backups! Anyone could go in there with half a brain and look successful. But look before that, 2-14 with Chiefs as OC, 6-10 with Dolphins before that, had the worst ranked offense in the NFL with the Browns before that. What changed? Has he re-written NFL offenses or has he benefitted from Allen's growth?

McD needs to progress more into a killer mentality. Starts today by firing Daboll. Lol.
