Brady isn’t wrong. There is a reason they had rules for the numbers. Great comments by Brady, even though I can’t stand that guy I respect him as a football player.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers' Tom Brady blasts 'dumb' new NFL uniform number rule

TAMPA, Fla. -- While several NFL players expressed excitement this week over a newly adopted rule that allows more flexibility when it comes to the numbers worn on players' jerseys, Tampa Bay Buccaneersquarterback Tom Brady is not at all a fan.

Brady took to Instagram on Thursday to express his dissatisfaction with the rule change, believing it will cause safety issues for the offense, such as identifying blitzers or who's the middle linebacker of the defense.

Good luck trying to block the right people now!" Brady posted on his Instagram story, with an image of the new numbers permitted. "Going to make for a lot of bad football!"

Brady then posted a screen capture of a story about the rule and directed it to the NFL and NFL Players Association, with the words "DUMB" and "Why not let the Lineman wear whatever they want too? Why have numbers? Just have colored jerseys...why not wear the same number?...DUMB."

The NFL's new rule, adopted Wednesday with a number of other proposals, allows quarterbacks, punters and place-kickers to wear numbers 1-19, defensive backs 1-49, and then running backs, tight ends and wide receivers 1-49 and 80-89. Offensive linemen can wear 50-79, defensive linemen 50-79 and 90-99, and linebackers 1-59 and 90-99.

Oh it will be harder for the old man to get calls in his favor. .

Unfortunately he is correct.  It is a stupid unnecessary rule and actually they should restrict numbers more to assist the Refs with certain calls.

This easily can lead to identification issues for how players line up and illegal versus legal blocks by position and location on the field.

If each position group had 10-15 numbers with limited overlap - it would be fine.  Preseason and training camp overlap numbers with camp fodder and let’s go.

Another classic example of Tom Brady thinking he is in charge of the rules. And I cant blame him with the way the League has handled it for 20 years.

How did he survive playing college football? It's pretty much wide open, and he did just fine.

The player numbers don't seem to affect college officiating.....I'm ok with it if it keeps the players happy.

Is it really?  if other players have an opinion on it, does it mean they think they are in charge?

Listen, I'm going to hate Tom Brady, and that's the way it's going to be.

Fair enough, but anyone who thinks Tawm's opinion doesn't hold more weight than the vast majority of other players is kidding themself.

Can the NFL learn its lesson AFTER Tainted T*m's career is ended?  Maybe with a mouth injury so we do not need to hear him in broadcast booth?

Damn. This is drastic. Tommy Boy’s a known drama queen, but he has point. Not much a point though. Film study tells the QB everything he needs to know: who, where & why. He’s just trying to get out of doing his homework.

pansey😒

Can someone please explain to me the grievance?

Each player on a team still has a unique number asigned to them so his case doesnt seem to hold water

You are assuming every NFL player will know the entire lineup of the opposition, week to week.

Tom Brady is living in the real world and knows the difficulty in getting football players to understand who even a handful of guys are on the field, over and over, from teams you play all the time.

See the difference?

He probably has nightmares about trying to tell some idiot who the Mike is on a given play, and now that job just got a little bit harder.

Brady lost his credibility two cheating scandals ago.

Wow!  Your statement gave me pause to remember a great Charlton Heston movie line, delivered in a commanding voice: "As ye sow, so shall ye reap!".

I think he says that to General Urko. 🤔

Seems like unnecessary tinkering, but I'm not picking up on how the change could have long-lasting, damaging effects on the game.

If a blocker misses an assignment because he thought OLB #10 was part of the other team's offense, chances are that player was released from the concussion protocol too soon.

Not buying it, Tommy. You don’t identify middle linebackers, etc., by their number; you identify them by where they are positioned on the field. But you know that.

43 is the Mike. Everybody knows this.

Teams are in charge of what numbers they will assign players.  They can just choose to ignore this rule and tell players they are keeping their traditional numbers.

But for kicks and giggles (see what I did there?), let's say Antonio Brown wants to wear #3, can you see the locker room drama between Tom and AB?

I actually didn’t think of that angle (the blocking assignments).  He has a good point.

Yes...and it's at the top of his head. Whether or not anybody thinks the rule change is bad is irrelevant. Brady will not elicit much empathy from anybody. He's an infamous whiner and has been involved in numerous cheating scandals during his career and is used to getting his way. I know it is hard for him to fathom but the league will survive without him or his opinions once he's gone. He's entering his 22nd year in the league and, if he can't handle this rule change or is afraid that his teammates can't, maybe it's time for him to finally hang them up. He's walking around with the 'GOAT' moniker...deal and STFU, Brady.

That would be over quick.  "AB, no."

Antonio wants, Antonio gets. (so his mind thinks from reading articles about him). Remember his grievance about him not being allowed to wear the helmet of his choice whilst with the Raiders for the 3 weeks he was with them?

This will be difficult. Teams will have to cover Dion Dawkins because now he will look like a WR. Brady will have trouble with this since he also can't remember what down it is

He has a point, and if it wasn't coming from Brady, nobody would really care about this non-story. He's probably exaggerating how significant the change will be, but it likely will make it at least a little tougher on the OLines, and it's not like there's anything really to be gained from the rule change outside of some more revenue for the league as players change their numbers. This was likely a "break glass in case of emergency" rule for the NFL if they ever lost revenue like they did this past season.

He did what he was told in Tamps.   Not a peep from him.
