thenorthremembers
I think Houston is an incredibly stupid organization, but Watson looks like a complete loser in this deal. If I were Houston I wouldnt take anything less than 4 first round picks for the guy or two 1sts and an established veteran QB. Dolphins fans who think Tua factors into this at all are out of their mind, you have the guy for a year and dont want him, but think that another team that's never had him in their building thinks the kid is worthy of being in a trade for one the best quarterbacks in the league? No chance. And not for nothing, its going to cost the Texans 20 Million dollars just to trade him. Watson wants to be in New York thats obvious, but again if I am in Houston, I do not trade him in the AFC. That said there are only two teams I consider if I am the Texans and thats the Lions or the 49ers. I'd ask the Lions to give me Stafford and two first round picks or the 49ers to give me Jimmy G and two 1sts. Thats it, otherwise I tell Watson to go pound salt. No_Matter_What
It is hard for me to judge this situation since we miss a ton of info, but still - what a vast difference between Watson and Watt handling similar situations. I'd love to hear what J.J. thinks about this.

To recap: 1) Trades 2 #1st to Miami for Tunsil, giving the Dolphins a top-five pick; Tunsil wasn't extended in advance, giving players in a similar position additional negotiating leverage. 2) Trades Hopkins for peanuts; Hopkins single-handedly beats Buffalo in 2020 3) Hires David Culley instead of Leslie Frazier, giving extra draft capital to the best GM in football 4) Likely trades a top-five QB in his prime to the AFC East And the playoff game last year. Hope they follow Hopkins trade model and send to NFC team.
H2o
IMO SF is the best place for Watson if he wants to win now. Shanahan is one of the best offensive minds in the league and he'd be falling into a bunch of weapons with Kittle, Samuel, and Aiyuk. They also have a solid RB stable. Then you can throw in the top 5 defense they will have again when everyone comes back healthy. Edited January 28, 2021 by H2o
ndirish1978
He can ask for as many trades as he'd like. If I'm Caserio I tell him to play out his contract or play out his contract. The hiring of Culley, who I don't think is expected to be some sort of long-term savior, would indicate to me that the Texans are about to start a re-build. If I get #2 or #3 I am picking one of those 3 QBs that are not Lawrence and then maximising my capital to try and put stuff around him. So basically I want picks instead of Tua or Darnold. If my QB gets hurt? Well I will just be like most NFL franchises when their QB goes down. Re QBs going down, check out this quote from Ron Jaworski's book: 'As we watched, we were surprised to see Manning taking virtually all the reps in the session. Jon [Gruden] asked Tom [Moore, the Colts offensive coordinator,] why he wasn’t giving some snaps to Peyton’s backups…He looked at us both in the eye, paused for a moment, then said in that gravelly voice of his, “Fellas, if ‘18’ goes down, we’re f*cked. And we don’t practice f*cked.”'

I guess it depends on who you prefer Jimmy G, Darnold, or Tua. The problem with Garapolo is his big contract. The Texans have a bad cap situation. The other two are on rookie contracts, and personally I think Darnold has a fair bit more upside than Tua.

Pick your own rather than taking a reclamation project that is gonna be almost impossible to sell to your already furious fanbase. For me 3 #1 picks plus either two #3s or a #2 and a #4 is about where I'd pitch the price. Should say if I am trading with the 9ers or Panthers I do want their QB as part of the deal because I am probably out of position to draft one. If I am trading a 2nd or 3rd overall pick I am most certainly not giving them 2 other first rounders. Why would the Texans think those teams are going to agree to that when other teams are offering them a mid or late first round pick this year? Do they think they are stupid to not realize that a 2nd/3rd pick is hugely more valuable than a 10th or 15th or 20th overall pick?? If I'm either of those teams it is limited to the #2/#3 overall pick and a QB swap with maybe some lower round picks in there. Then again, I am in the shrinking number of people that dont believe you give people whatever they want just because they want it. It sets a bad precedence for the rest of the league, and what you end up with is employees who think they run the show. Pretty soon the league will be unwatchable and insufferable because employees, on teams that sunk a ton of time and money into players will be forcing their ways off of said teams to play with their buddies in other cities. Why dont we just do away with the draft altogether and ask College kids where they want to play?

Success
It seems almost likely at this point that he ends up in the division. The difference between the AFC and NFC at the QB position is becoming lopsided. I wish he'd end up in the NFC, if only for a little bit of balance. He has a ton of value, and the Texans can get a ton for him. Cutting off your nose to spite your face isn't a great strategy, especially in a not-for-long league with a new coach/GM who will be given a grace period because it's a new start. I get it, believe me. I am well aware that Houston has created most of their own problems. However, Watson isn't completely blameless in this entire fisco. You don't think he was well aware of all of the issues with this franchise before he signed a new contract? And, honestly, his behavior hasn't been much more professional than theirs. I think the value for him is limited because the would reach new levels of ineptness in trading a franchise QB within the division or conference - and that is where the teams are that can offer the most. Nothing could be worse for that team than to have to face him any future playoff scenarios within the conference. So, if they go out of conference, as they should, they are not going to get nearly as much for him. I hate when I see situations like this where, as professionals, they should be able to reach some agreement.
