whatdrought
This likely won't be an issue this year, but in general: would you rather lose a close AFC Championship on a last second FG to a team that isn't the Patriots, or win said game and get blown out/embarrassed in the SB ala Seahawks-Broncos, Broncos-Panthers, Falcons-Pats (not a blow out, but def. embarrassing) Bills-Cowboys. Which is preferable, and why? This is purely a thought exercise based on a random thought I had today. Not saying either is likely or desirable. Bills fan since 87
People have asked me over the last 20 years what I would do if the Bills got to and lost a 5th Superbowl. I've always said SIGN ME UP. After surviving the drought I could deal with it. The sting of a close loss with the SB on the line would hurt a lot more than 0-5 jokes. Plus I could pick up some new AFC champs swag. Edited November 26, 2019 by Bills fan since 87 2

I always think “what if ....” When you get beat like the Rams did last night you just kind of go “welp.” Plus it would be a blast leading up to the Super Bowl just like it was in Jax. The anticipation and party was unreal.

I am old enough that I remember all four Superbowl losses, I was in highschool and it sucked. But Superbowl week is such a special thing to be a part of. The Media is all about you, the local send off, the excitement. I want to be a part of that again. Now the 88 AFC championship game loss to Cincinnati? It left me feeling so empty. Like we missed out on the national party that is SB week.....Cool topic btw. Edited November 26, 2019 by Bills fan since 87
chaccof
Give me a SB lose any time. Who remembers who lost the AFC championship? Plus, as other posters have pointed out, its a pretty fun week. And I think, because of the Bills history, many folks would be pulling for them much like they did for Denver when they went to their 5th SB.

row_33
i watched the Bills get blown out and embarrassed in a SB 3 times, that wasn't much fun it was even worse than the first one where they should have won by 21 points but were totally outcoached and out-hustled and out-desired the whole game Edited November 26, 2019 by row_33

I could deal with it too, if for no other reason than to say we are replacing NE’s run of AFC championships—and it would be fun to daydream for 2 weeks thereafter on this board! youngjebrey
A Super Bowl blowout is pretty demoralizing to a team. I think a close afc championship loss is a much better fate. Keeps the team hungry and angry

Keeps the team hungry and angry for the 3rd and 4th SB time leading up to the bad losses, the media rolled its collective eyes, knowing the Bills had no prayer not sure if this went on for the usual two weeks or if they were a one-week situation back then it was very anti-climatic
Real McClappy
SB loss easily with a QB this young that has time to correct it. Let him, all players and staff learn how big a media spotlight moment it is. SB games in their own are a learning curve with all the distractions that come with them for a team. Boatdrinks
To me, the AFC championship loss to the Bengals was worse than any of the Superbowl losses. H2o
I think the age demographic here will be the determining factor in this poll. Fans who never dealt with the 4 consecutive SB losses will pick the SB, while the ones who clearly remember the early 90's would rather lose in the AFC Title game in a competitive fashion. DrDawkinstein
Is this in the context of our current team? Or just any team in general? If I'm thinking about this current, young team, I'd rather have them lose a close one in the AFC Champ. It wouldnt kill their confidence and keep them hungry. A blowout SB loss is usually pretty devastating to a team. Heck, Super Bowl WINS are usually devastating to teams. If we're talking some non-real team, and it's just a general question, I'd rather go to the Super Bowl I think. Tough one tho, because EVERY fan sees that SB loss and never forgets it. So you hear about it the rest of your life. Folks forget about Conf Final losses so the wound will heal.

Victory Formation
Losing a Super Bowl could reverse the culture change here. Psychologically it’s very hard for players and coaches to overcome. Seems like teams that lose a Super Bowl explode and never make it back. Livinginthepast
I remember all 4 SB losses and the playoff losses going back to Ferguson and co losing to Fout's Chargers. They all stung. But the SB's sting the most. We should have won the first one easily and if better prepared could have taken at least 2 out of the following 3. But it was a poor planning and lack of adjustments in game that did us in at every turn. The worst non SB playoff loss is that game in Cleveland in the 1989 season (which was the Harmon dropped pass). In the end I would rather have them lose in the AFC championship than blow another SB! LabattBlue
Excellent thread title. ...and I chose losing in the AFC Championship game. No need to be kicked in the nuts a fifth time...and a blowout loss would do just that. Edited November 26, 2019 by LabattBlue
whatdrought
I think my thought process of it is that coming just short of the SB leaves a "we've got more work to do, but we're on the cusp of making it happen. Time to grind." while getting embarrassed in the SB has a finality feeling to it. Obviously this can be overcome as well, but some things linger longer. I think of the Falcons and the Panthers. Both embarrassed in the SB, both have been up and down (though mostly down) since then. That being said, the Broncos got embarrassed in the SB and then got right back within a couple years, but that was with one of the greatest professionals to play the game at QB, and with a new coaching staff. I feel like it's easier to go into the next season after a close loss, rather than a blow out.

buffaloboyinATL
Easy, Super Bowl. 'Cause when we get there, I'll start a new hypothetical poll, that will supersede your hypothetical poll, and both options will have us winning the game. Something like: Would you rather the Bills win the Super Bowl, but you have to use ranch dressing on your wings, or the Bills win the Super Bowl and you run out of beer in the 2nd quarter.
