STRENGTHS

Outstanding burst and quickness off the snap. Penetrator with ability to make plays on the other side of the line if he wins early. Able to blow up zone plays with quickness. Plays with desired bend. Uses rip to establish advantage on edge and then plays with leverage to maintain his position through the play. High school defensive end who brings more advanced hand usage and pass-rush moves to the interior spot. Has athleticism to mirror and help contain quarterbacks thinking of bolting from pocket. Plus speed to the sideline in pursuit.

WEAKNESSES

Still growing into his body and needs more time to add bulk. Needs to hit the weights hard in order to handle down blocks and pure power when he gets squared up. Struggles to unhinge himself and get back into the play once he's snatched by guards with size. At times, gets caught on tape just riding out the snap when initial pass rush stalls. Lacks formidable bull rush. Lacks size and functional power to play in anything but 4-3.

DRAFT PROJECTION

 Round 3

NFL COMPARISON

 George Uko

BOTTOM LINE

One-gap penetrator with serious juice off the snap. Philon could have used an additional year at Arkansas to add muscle and improve himself as a take-on defensive tackle, but teams will absolutely be intrigued by his combination of get-off and interior-pass-rush potential.

I just don't get why they wouldn't re-sign him.  He wouldn't be that expensive, probably around the $5M a year range.  He's been productive, he gets after the QB and he's young and still getting better.

Either they don't value the position that much or they think they can get similar production elsewhere.

Philon is a guy that could bring a skill set to the room that missing. I’d prefer Oliver to play that role but there are no guarantees that he’s available. It would be a good signing though (especially at the right price).

I’m having trouble selling myself on Oliver with the lack of sack production. What makes you think he can put up better pass rush stats in the pros?

I am guessing they just don't want to tie up to much money in the defensive line, with Bosa coming up on the 5th year option. Who knows? They probably think that they can plug anybody into their system and get production.

You were plugging for this signing a few days ago, yes?

They aren’t going to tie up money in him, they can draft a replacement. Maybe if his market comes down but he’s expected 4-5 mill

If we sign Philon (excellent move if we do), I'd really start to think we're looking to trade down.

I still think we get a DE in FA/Trade somehow, someway, which would mean we'd essentially be set with Hughes/Shaq/Murphy/TBD & Star/Philon/Jordan/Harry

Its not the sacks so much that we are in need of. Not that they aren't nice to have, mind you, but what a perfect fit would be is a beast of a penetrating 3tech. Probably the best vs. the run amongst all his peers, and his ability to shoot gaps and get TFL's are equally important to this defense. Pressure up the gut will open lanes for DE's and LBers stunting. And double teams he will draw will Definately help the pass rush get home

........ or they are split on the Jonah Williams / Ed Oliver thread.  If they sign Philon, they can go Jonah Williams at 9 (or trade down and take OT Rizner) and then RB Miles Sanders or TE Irv Smith in the 2nd.

He looks like he would be a solid get. While there is the adage of never having enough good DL, this signing would likely end the idea of Oliver. They are keeping Star. They are very likely keeping Harry and Phillips. And they are definitely keeping Philon if he is signed. Sure, it's possible they would release Phillips on last cuts but I doubt they keep 5 DTs. I would like the signing and then go get an LT in round one.

Because he is double and triple teamed.  If he was at Clemson or Alabama, he would have monster stats.

Maybe, he'd also be facing better competition.

The physical talent is clearly there but the NFL is littered with the bodies of guys who were physically talented.

But couldn’t you say the same thing about Josh Allen?

oliver was one of the best recruits in the country and shockingly choose Houston.  He still had 53 TFLs in 3 years where he was the number one player on their defense to game plan against.

I definitely noticed that, still wish he overcame that though. Donald dominated double teams in college. I do think Oliver played a lot of NT though. That is not an ideal position for him. I would be happy if we drafted him still.

I think based on the reports that we were going to swap 9 with 20 w/ Steelers for AB, that BB has his sights on trading down, which makes all the sense in the world.

I would love to trade with Raiders 24 & 27 for 9th.

IMO if we sign Philon that will take us out of the Ed Oliver race, although I like Oliver alot.

W/ Hughes on the last year of his deal, Murphy not really doing much and Shaq still not tendered his 5th year, I see us going Edge 1st pick, which is deep in this draft. Although the interest in Ansah could change that.

Fair point.  I guess you could say Clowney was like that too. He had 3 sacks his last year in college.

I think on the right team, Oliver could be a monster.

He would be a great Kyle Williams replacement.

If we draft Oliver, Burns, Taylor, or Hockenson I will be stoked on draft day.

Found this on Google, written today. Chargers blog.

Quote

Philon, 25, was the most consistent player on the interior part of the defensive line. After being overshadowed by Brandon Mebane and Corey Liuget, Philon emerged as a star up front the past two years.

The former Arkansas product started 13 out of 16 games during the regular season, amassing 33 tackles, and leading the team with four sacks and nine quarterback hits in 2018. Philon was a force at rushing the passer and stopping the run.

Woke up thinking about this today

If we truly are doing what Beane said and "using free agency to fill needs" taking BPA in the draft......what about Devin White?  My thoughts

- Lorax retiring

- The bills might not be set on Edmunds being a MLB

- Gives them 3 LB's that can cover

- Possibly BPA?

Then you trade back up into the 1st round for Risner

You have to consider it if he is there. He shouldn’t be available at 9 imo.

If we were to sign him all I know is I want the Bills to add another Williams...Like Greedy Williams or Jonsh Williams whichever one is there at #9...In either case it is a win win..The Bills can have an elite secondary or a real solid o-line.Is #9 too high for a guatd? They say Jonah is a tackle that better translates to a guard in the NFL...If both there I’d draft Greedy...GO BILLS!!!

NFL Career Stats with Chargers 4 years

54 games

19 games started

2 PD

2 FF

9.5 Sacks

46 Solo

4 Ast

16 TFL

22 QB Hits

Agreed.  He needed to get stronger coming out of college, but he's a perfect fit for 3 tech, the spot that Kyle Williams' retirement left open.  Sign him then draft BPA at #9 If the pick his Ed Oliver, then they will have a heck of a competition.
