Alphadawg7
Both Seattle and Cincy lost their TE's for the season this weekend. Both want to contend this year, so why not see if we can trade them Clay? He is doing very little, I have always felt his effort varies widely form play to play, and I think its quite possible he won't be here next year anyway. I do realize, he is probably our best receiving option right now on this team since KB, ZJ, and the rest of the WRS suck...but I have also liked what little we have seen from Croom and think it won't matter much if we trade Clay since we are not getting much out of him anyway. I do think guys like McCoy, KB, and Shaq are also trade candidates before the deadline, but I think Clay is a guy that fills an urgent need right now on 2 teams looking to contend this year and his value would be at the highest this week for whatever we can get for him. billsfan89
Maybe TBD's resident cap experts can chime in but would there be any positive or negative cap impact on trading Clay before the deadline? Right now the Bills can cut Charles Clay in 2019 and save 4.5 million on his 9 million cap number and be clear of any remaining cap charges in 2020. If the Bills were to trade Clay for a mid to late round pick to Cincy or some other team does that save the Bills anything significant in 2019? I think if you can get a 5th round pick and there is lets say a bigger cap savings in 2019 from trading him then you have to consider it. But if there isn't a cap savings and you can't get a highish pick for him then you are better off keeping on of your only decent receiving option.

Wayne Arnold
Doubtful that a team would trade for Clay considering that contract. He will likely finish out this season with the Bills then we can finally get rid of the worst contract in the league.

Admittedly I didn't take salary cap into consideration because I thought he was in the last year of his deal, which appears to be wrong. So yeah, salary cap should then also be a consideration of course then. But I think we need a new TE regardless, so I think if we can get a 5th or even a 4th from someone like Cincy who might be more desperate because they need to go deep this year in the playoffs for some people to keep their jobs IMO, then lets get rid of him. He is one of the most aggravating players in IMO because he is capable of being so much more but his effort and focus has always been inconsistent to me.

Rc2catch
Cincinnati I don’t think is realistic at all. Have you ever watched their back up tight ends play in that system? Those guys can ball. And as others stated nobody is gonna want clay and his deteriorating knees on their team with that contract.

Kemp
If you were a rival GM, you wouldn't even take on that contract as a gift. When I wrote here in the pre-season to get rid of him, the resident geniuses told me how good he was.

Even though Clay is overpaid and overguaranteed to hell, his contract is hardly cap prohibitive. He was the best FA TE on the market in the last 5 years. 1 minute ago, Kemp said: If you were a rival GM, you wouldn't even take on that contract as a gift. That's because those "resident geniuses" knew it would actually cost the Bills $4.5M more to cut him than keep him in dead cap this year. But hey, you called it (incorrectly) without doing a single second of research!
Rocky Landing
Wait a minute... isn't Charles Clay one of our most reliable receivers? I haven't even bothered to look at the stats, but every game I see him real in catches that our wide receivers drop. Is this another "we should tank" thread? I think Clay is still a decent (not great) player, and I don't see the upside in forcing Allen to play with scrubs only. Indeed, I only see downside for Allen's development. Clay is really the only starting-caliber receiver on the team given that Benjamin looks simply awful.

I dont disagree with this, I just dont believe Clay will be here next year...so rather than just cut him, I would be interested in getting more draft assets in this draft. The more we have, the more ammo we have to move around the draft when opportunity arises like how Edmunds got to us. Doesnt even have to be first round movement, we could use more picks to move up in other rounds to grab a guy they covet who may not last to our pick. And if we dont trade, we could use all those picks to address holes. So, while I agree Clay is the best receiving option, he is also doing nothing for this team right now, so might as well get something for him if we can net a 5th for him IMO and get rid of his contract too. nedboy7
I think if we can trade EVERYONE with any talent it will really help Josh become a bust. That would be great for our future since we all want a 0-16 season any year we cant win the superbowl cause we all know superbowls are won by #1 draft picks just like the Patriots have done for a decade. billsfan5121
I understand the thought of trading away anyone with any value. What I don’t understand is why people want this, but complain when we did that last year. Clay isn’t Gronk, but he’s not bad. McCoy has no real value. And Benjamin, why would anyone want him? Ittakestime
In a trade the other team would only be responsible for 4.5 million this year. If cut next year, it would be a 4.5 million dead cap. Not that bad.

My reasoning on Clay is I don't believe he will be on the opening day roster in 2019. I could be wrong, and if he is in the plans next year than I doubt they would trade him if they even had a chance too. But I don't think he is a guy that fits what McD and Beane want as a player, he has no focus and questionable effort IMO. And he is a guy that has underperformed to his ability his entire career and to his contract. So again, its not about getting rid of "talent", for me its rooted in my belief that I dont think he will be on the opening day roster in 2019 and would rather get something back for him now so we can have more ammo to make the moves we need to make in this draft. Again, though, if Beane and McD see him as a guy moving forward, than they shouldn't trade him. I just am highly skeptical he is that guy.

I worry about the very real potential for long term PTSD/shell shock for Allen. It's happened to more than a few QBs who have been forced to play early on in abysmal offenses.
