the NFL got $110 million just for this one Peacock game. Roughly 1/9 of a billion dollars to stream 3 hours of content one time. That's incredible.

There will be more exclusives next season, but luckily there's only so many choices as the broadcast partners are locked in. There will be more Peacock exclusives (many 2 regular season and 1 playoff) and probably an ESPN+

Whoever started this whole streaming/cut the cord movement should be drawn and quartered.    I have never spent more money and had less ease of use or access to things I have wanted to see than the way things are right now.

I miss the good ole days!  Hah

I actually like the streaming movement at first. It was when they were putting full seasons of old shows, or new shows with ads out. The problem now is that the model works when it can aggregate content. Now, every single media company wants their own and claims first dibs on those rights making it less user friendly cable.

The NFL has the NBC rights fee in the bank.   They could not care less about who is pirating the game.  As far as Peacock goes, only they know how many new subscribers come on board, and how many remain after the game is over.  If it is a huge loss for them, they may reconsider going forward.  If not, get ready for more of the same.

Media companies are finding that streaming is not the cash cow they have made it out to be. I wonder how much of a loss NBC takes

Are there Peacock exclusives this playoff beyond Wild Card Weekend?

No. This is it...for now at least. We'll see next season after the bidding, but only for the WC. The divisionals are, and will be for the near future, FOX, CBS, ESPN/ABC, and NBC.

AND streaming sucks. Don't watch it in a public bar, restaurant... Etc... The lag is hideous!

Watched Chargers in Nashville BillsBackers and it was a full 2 minutes behind my phone.  Socks if you're getting texts from people OR others in establishment know the outcome, you can see it on their faces.

Anyway... He's right. NFL blows and is greedy!

Surprisingly, the Red Zone channel is about 45 seconds - 1 minute AHEAD of the action being broadcast on the same platform. At least that's the way it is for me at home when watching on Xfinity/Comcast cable.  But,if I turn on my backup TV, with an antenna for over the air reception, THEY have it first. LOL

It’s not about the money! There are actually people who don’t have access to streaming. Geeeez

There are many who don't get broadcast TV. Maybe they should give everybody a VHS or Beta tape of the game.

To me, the strongest argument against streaming is that the NFL has an antitrust exemption and any fiddling with the playoff schedule will make, say, the Missouri delegation in Congress take a close look at it.  The NFL seems to think they can get away with it.

Well, I agree BUT think about this....

Amazon lost a court case regarding allowing unionization but they refuse to obey it and coerce/threaten employees who dare to try & organize. You think they give two cents about anti-trust stuff with the NFL.

Walmart owns 2 teams, Rams & Broncos. They don't give a darn either about it.

Sorry. Maybe that belongs on the political board but that's how I feel. The average Joe gets screwed no matter what.

Yep, that's an easy pass on Peacock. I'll just check the ESPN website every so often for the score. If I truly feel the need to watch it, I'll just find a feed on one of the websites.

Yep. I simply don't understand. I thought the "net neutrality" act was meant to help the consumer with tv & media, but it seems the opposite is true.

That is an entirely different issue, though the same model.

The net neutrality was to make sure that Internet Service Providers be considered a utility, so that Comcast can't throttle internet access to all other shows but NBCs so other shows are continuously buffering.

However, entertainment is not a utility, so they are able to legally restrict it.

Which is why a second golden age of internet piracy is starting, yo ho, yo ho!

There are a lot of elderly fans who will not be able to watch it.

Because they can't afford it, or because they can't figure out how to get it, or they just won't do it?

I kid, a little bit.  My FIL lives with us and I got him a Roku for Xmas because my wife was sick of him watching the same two channels 24/7.  I ditched the cable box, set him up with the Roku and taught him how to use it.

He loves it.

He also still watches the same two channels.  🤣

Here is the counter-argument the NFL would use in support of paid streaming games:

The difference between the past, when all games were OTA and free is they've added games on TV over the years so there didn't used-to-be:

kickoff game
TNF almost every week
MNF double-headers some weeks
17 games

a bye week, so more games can be watched
many international games

Thanksgiving evening game
Black Friday game
Christmas games some years
this many Saturday games
14 playoff teams which created this extra game

Compare the number of TV games to even just 10 years ago, never mind going further back.

That's just scheduling.  Every game for forever has had full broadcast crews already.  They're already making hugely more $$$ just by offering games beyond Sundays and Monday nights.

They'll make fans pay for every single game, and cram in the same million commercials, as soon as they can wean us into it.

Shoot, they already have some of us believing SB commercials are part of the entertainment

someday, a company is going to offer a service where you pay 1 fee and have all of these channels all in one convenient place, so you don't need multiple services or apps!

revolutionize TV!

IKR? This is from the NBC press release, which is hilarious in its gloating"

https://nbcsportsgrouppressbox.com/2024/01/08/nbcuniversal-is-home-to-record-three-nfl-playoff-games-on-super-wild-card-weekend-including-peacocks-presentation-of-nfls-first-ever-exclusive-live-streamed-playoff-game/

"Among the distinctions for NBCUniversal:

NBCU will be the first media company to serve as the home of three NFL Playoff Games in a single weekend (Saturday doubleheader and Sunday in primetime).

Peacock will present thefirst-ever exclusive live streamed NFL Playoff game (Saturday at 8 p.m. ET). This follows Peacock’s first-ever exclusive live stream of a regular season NFL game on Dec. 23 (Bills-Chargers).

Saturday night’s Peacock AFC Wild Card Exclusive – featuring Patrick Mahomes and the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Miami Dolphins — will once again feature a commercial-free fourth quarter similar to the Dec. 23 Bills-Chargers game.

[...]

The Peacock exclusive Wild Card game will be broadcast on NBC stations in the competing team cities, and available on mobile devices with NFL+. The NFL is the only sports league that presents all regular-season and postseason games on free, over-the-air television in local markets."

[end quote]

LOL: now is probably not the time to be saying:

"The NFL is the only sports league that presents all regular-season and postseason games on free, over-the-air television in local markets."

So when they do the commercial free thing they throw it to the studio instead of commercials.  Not sure how great that really is.  I kind of like mr caveman better than an ex patriots player.   But my question is do they have more commercials than normal for the first three quarts?

Not sure. I didn't keep track. I would imagine no, since that would just add more time to the first 3 quarters, and the NFL is pressuring networks to actually reduce commercials.

This is from an article I read:

https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/nfl-peacock-commercial-free-football-game-1235849433/

NFL, Peacock Hope to Tackle Commercial Breaks, But Others Have Tested Similar Blitz

"NBC has good reason to help the NFL in its quest to cut interruptions to game play. The league has put pressure on all of the networks that show its games to do so. Fox even cut a commercial break from each quarter of its broadcast of Super Bowl LIV.

[...]

The growing challenge? Most of the couch potatoes who leave traditional TV for streaming do so because subscription-based services like Netflix offer ad-free tiers. Of course, that is changing. Netflix, Disney, Max and others offer options that does feature advertising, The dynamic is likely to accelerate further in 2024 when Amazon Prime Video makes advertising its default option. Prime subscribers who don’t want to watch ads will have to pony up another $2.99 per month."

When I signed up for the Hulu/Disney/ESPN with ads package, and went to add it to my Roku, surprise!  For some reason, Roku does not support the "with ads" package, I had to upgrade to the "no ads" package.  All the other streaming services I use were ok to load the "with ads" app.

Cost is not the issue as much as just access is. They can throw all the apps and QR codes at you on-screen they want. Unless youre mobile-tech saavy, forget it. Even for those of us who are...admit it...its often a giant PITA to get these apps to load up, set up an account, deal with the idiot two factor authentication, make sure youre wi-fi is on point, make sure your streaming device (i.e. Firestick) is up to date (and all the work to make THAT happen) if you dont have a SmartTV, deal with the username and PWs (which are often required to be more intricate than the launch codes), etc. Its a lot and the proverbial "little old lady" has virtually zero shot to make it all work right in time for kickoff. But then again, that little old lady doesnt spend a ton on "The Shield" so the league so it doesnt give a ***** about her anymore. Its gross.

*hear hear*

If you buy PEACOCK and pay to watch this game, you're part of the problem.

I'll be watching for free through questionable means.

I assume this game is the same??

Great question. Contractually, games have to be on over the air TV in a teams home market. Would think that applies to playoff games as well.

He is not wrong here. It is a shame that many football fans will not be able to watch the game. All playoff games should be on CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC, ESPN.

I don't see putting it on Peacock being that much different than putting it on ESPN. You have to pay for cable to get ESPN so either way it is behind a paywall? I generally agree the NFL should avoid putting a second paywall for playoff games its not in their best interest but if games are on cable why not a streaming service?

I think his point is that ESPN has never been a free channel to watch. It’s included with cable tv, which costs money.

I mean, I love the message, hate the messenger.

In particular, I am personally pissed off about the portioning off streaming exclusives. I paid for Sunday Ticket because I wanted a functional, legal way to watch the Bills. I have been able to watch...I think 2-4 games on it this season between prime time exceptions, local broadcast claims, and exclusives.

So the the NFL should be not at all surprised when this game gets pirated to death.

They’re perfectly fine with it being pirated. The NFL wouldn’t be expanding and playing games in other countries if those “new” fans weren’t introduced to the game via internet streaming.

Yeah the game is on free TV for the markets of the two teams involved. For Buffalo-LAC the game was on WGRZ (NBC/2) Buffalo and KNBC (NBC/4) LA. For MIA-KC it will be simulcasted on WTVJ (NBC/6) Miami and KSHB (NBC/41) Kansas City.

Boo hoo. It's a business. They make money. Streaming has been around forever, now. Figure it out or find some free stream to watch if you really don't want to pay a few dollars for it.
