Dan Orlovsky All-Time QB list

It’s his list and clearly written for discussion purposes. Joe Montana deserves to be in the top 5. You can make a case for Johnny Unitas too. Dan knew people would get a rise out of this by not including Joe and that’s what’s happened.

My dad always told me if Roger Staubach would have been allowed to go straight from the Navy back then he’d easily be top 5.

So if you were looking for controversy mission accomplished and I’ll bet his bosses at ESPN are happy.

I'd leave both out of the top 5 personally.

1) Tom Brady

2) Joe Montana

3) Peyton Manning

4) Drew Brees

5) John Elway

It gets progressively harder to rank after that, but you have Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, Johnny Unitas, Dan Marino, Fran Tarkenton, Steve Young, Bart Starr... mix and match those how you want. It's tough to rank the old time greats with the prolific newer generation.

The Patriots were a product of Tom Brady... Sorry. I think it is pretty clear he was the best ever. I think he has his warts and the cheating scandals, but there's no denying what a winner he was. And his longevity is insane.

I'll give you points on Brady's longevity. I just think Montana was better. Remember, he took an underperforming Chiefs team to the AFC Championship against the Bills.

Montana is the best ever if Brady didn't come along. He was awesome.

Brady solidified it by going to another team and winning a superbowl. He proved he could do it without Belichick, and the Pats have been mediocre since Brady left. (Similarly, I give major points to Manning for doing the same thing).

It's splitting hairs, though. Both are all time greats.

I think Mahomes could eventually be #2 and potentially even #1, but there's no chance he is now. 1 Super Bowl win and if they lose next week and his knee bends backwards and he never played again I don't even think he's top 10

7-3 in super bowls is significantly better than 4-0 in super bowls. If Tom was 4-6 in super bowls that would also be significantly more impressive than 4-0

Yeah, if Mahomes never played again we'd be lamenting what he could have been. Nobody would say he is top 5 all time. Anyone who does is projecting the rest of his career.

It's all pointless...Josh Allen #1 coming up soon! Nobody has had his talent level.

Montana should be #2. Mahomes is great, but it's too soon to call him #2 all time. I like that Marino gets mention, but I'd feel better about it if he'd won a SB. It's also curious that no QB from before 1970 gets any love here, but the author probably never saw any of them play. Besides, it was a much more physical game back then.

What a moron. Montana is still in the argument for best ever. If he played in this era he would be devastating.  Elway is far too high on the list. Mahommes is a great QB but he simply doesn't have the career numbers to be included in this group yet. Its too much speculation what his future will look like. What happens to him if Reid retires? Mahommes may one day be #2 but not yet.

I'm fine with Marino over Favre Manning, and Breese as well. What he did in his era was incredible.

My top 10 guy that never gets enough love is Steve Young. He doesn't have the career totals because of how long he sat, but he was a great QB.  Far better than guys like Bradshaw Aikman, and just as good as Elway and Favre.

Lastly my dark horse guy is Staubach. He doesn't get the recognition he deserves.  I would put him ahead of Bradshaw, Dawson, Griese, Tarkenton or any other guy from his era.

Except for the guy who’s played 5 years at number 2.

Abysmal list.

Based on current trajectory the only question re: Mahomes is whether he will win enough rings to make the GOAT debate interesting.

You could make a list based on talent or trajectory, I suppose. Mahomes should be top 5 in that. But top 5 greatest QB's of all time RIGHT NOW? He doesn't have the longevity, the accolades, or the stats to back that up. He'll probably get there, but he isn't there yet.

If the qualifier is winning the whole enchilada, QB's can put up gaudy stats, but can they win BIG games?

Here is the list of multiple SB winners:

Tom Brady – 7 in 23 seasons 30%

Terry Bradshaw – 4 in 14 seasons 29%

Joe Montana – 4 in 16 seasons 25%

Troy Aikman – 3 in 12 seasons 25%

Roger Staubach – 2 in 11 seasons 18%

Bob Griese – 2 in 14 seasons 14%* [DNP in Super Bowl]

Jim Plunkett – 2 in 15 seasons 13%

John Elway – 2 in 16 seasons 12.5%

Eli Manning – 2 in 16 seasons 12.5%

Peyton Manning – 2 in 18 seasons 11%

Ben Roethlisberger – 2 in 18 seasons 11%

But....

Bart Starr – 2 in 6 seasons he played during SB era 33%, also 3 NFL titles in 10 seasons 30%, so 5 titles in 16 seasons 31%

and the aforementioned Otto Graham 4 AAFL and 3 NFL titles in 10 Seasons.

He went to 10 Superbowls and has won more SB than any single team.

rodgers will be a footnote in the history of the nfl in 12-15 years like kelly, favre, testeverde, and many others.

i'd rank eli over him because eli could perform when it mattered.

Even Joe Montana himself would laugh at your post.

I agree, but can't we all agree on something?  The consensus around the league and among NFL fans, for quite a long time prior to the current era, was that the "best of all time" was Joe Montana.

He had that mystique as a multi-SB winer, the guy who could always mount the last second comeback, and was very calm and smooth under pressure.

Like during the Bills SB era and later, people talked of Montana as the non plus ultra of quarterbacks.

Then a whole bunch of really good ones emerged and now it's more of a conversation.

Dan Marino is probably the best pure passer of all time!

Dude was miles ahead of Jim Kelly.

I’ve seen Marino the great choker in the playoffs.  “Mr I Don’t Need a Running Game”

and then he would cry that he didn’t have one.  He was in accurate in the playoffs and blamed others for it.  There’s was always an excuse for him.  He had one playoff win away from Miami in his entire career.  ONE.

Best pure passer?  Maybe if someone is feeling nostalgic.

I have Joe firmly in the number two spot.

I have Brady above all, then Joe, and then it’s debatable.  Right now I would go with Johnny U at the number three spot.  As legendary as he is, people tend to forget how he revolutionized the position.

If it wasn't for the Bills, then Marino probably has a ring or two. The Dolphins could never get past the Bills. The Kelly-Marino years were some of the best battles in the NFL at that time.

I can't see anyone but a serious Bills homer even trying to debate this.  Kelly's not even a top 10 QB.
