Warriorspikes51
Okay enough is ENOUGH. How many times yesterday was the clock at 0 and then the ball was snapped or a crazy timeout was called. These half second - second + judgment calls by the field officials need to be REMOVED FROM THE GAME. Solution: Play Clock hits 0 = automatic Buzzer in the stadium. The NBA does this for their shot clock. It should also create more urgency for offenses to make sure they get the snap off. Warriorspikes51
Another idea would be having an extra official whose only job is literally to watch the play clock. But the buzzer seems it would be consistent

stevestojan
The fact that it’s 2023 and we’re still using the “ref stares at clock then down to the ball” is insane. I mean I’ve been asking for a chip in the ball (which there already is one for punts) to prove line to gain, and I understand you still need to see where his knee was, but if you remove the variable of where the ball is you only need to focus on his knee. For example, replay of a QB sneak, the screen indicates exactly when the ball passed the line to gain, so the video pauses so the ref can search for a kneecap touching ground. But I digress… The problem you outline is levels of magnitude easier to solve for, yet here we are, with 70 year old men staring at a clock then shifting their view to the ball. Awful.

Ramza86
Im gonna say while it was really annoying that the fins got about 4 second leeway to use the timeout after the clock hit zero....Its better that you just give the team the option to burn a timeout even if its passed zero though.

Either switch two two decimal point clocks or have some sort of light go off so it’s more obvious when that last second is gone. It could then be reviewable to see if the ball is hiked before the light goes off. Relying on refs to count that final second in their heads leaves room for a huge margin of error.

boater
As long as they don't use the GD train horn was the "buzzer" A problem I foresee: the crowd noise on the visitors third down would drown out any acceptable buzzer.

Buffalo_Stampede
There should be a better way to do this. Why can’t the booth official call the flag? Seems like a simple fix. Right now there’s always going to be that extra second because the official waits until it hits zero and then checks for the snap.

On the delay they were finally forced to call on the 4th down, the clock was on zero for at least an additional two seconds before the flag came. Ridiculous. Not sure if it's changed the outcome of a game this year, but something like this can and it's just a matter of time before it does. It's the NFL's credibility on the line here. If they don't address something which should be a no-brainer...throwing a flag if the clock is at zero and the ball is still under center...they're only hurting their own product. If they do nothing, it will have game impacting ripples if not possibly even game deciding repercussions in the future. Guaranteed. But seriously. There should be a buzzer on their hand for when it hits zero. They feel it and the ball isn’t snapped, penalty automatically. The crazy thing is how slow these refs scans are to the point that they can’t look at the clock and in their peripheral see the ball isn’t snapped
