He's a fit on the Colts.Ā  At a minimum, Mayfield could throw a 20-yard pass.Ā  Right now, that's an impossible task in Indianapolis with Matt Ryan.Ā Ā

Ā

The 4-8-1 Colts would be insane to pick him up.Ā  The last thing they need is to win a couple more games.

Colts have a bye then play the Vikings, Chargers, Giants and end the season with the Texans.

They should be in full tank mode.

So if he does sign with someone....he will have been on 3 teams in the last 6 months.

It's why they hired Saturday.

Baker isn't elite but he isn't the worst either. I can't see a playoff caliber team pursuing him though as that's a major distraction that can't be good for a locker room this late in the season.Ā

Ā

He can be a good game manager, and at least give defenses more to worry about than a rookie Mr Irrelevant.

Ā

SF already survived a mini-QB Controversy that fixed itself once Lance got injured. Now they have to deal with the other guy going down. They have to bring someone in to backup Purdy at the very least. I think their locker room could manage dealing with bringing Mayfield in late.

For the Colts and Texans, I see it being more of a move for next year. See what he has, and if they want to make him an offer to extend/re-sign.

They brought in Josh Johnson who's been there (and everywhere) before. Baker in Houston feels feasible.

The day after Jimmy G goes down for the season.Ā
Ā

Interestingā€¦

Ā

Ā

Ā

Panthers save $1.35M in cap by this move, not that I'm sure cap space matters to them.

Ā

Mayfield is a FA next season, though if they kept him on the roster through the end of the season and he signs elsewhere (almost certain to happen) they could theoretically get a comp pick

Ā

Locker room move?

Ā

It's bizarre to think that with a record of 4-8 after a win overĀ  Denver a week ago, the Panthers are potentially one W out of the NFC S division title (depending upon the results of Tampa Bay-NO tonight).Ā

Ā

Tampa Bay then plays the 49ers, the Bengals, and the Cardinals, while the Panthers have Seattle, the Steelers, and the Lions.Ā

Ā

In theory, the Jan 1 meeting between the Bucs and the Panthers could have playoff implications!

Ā

teams who could sign him

Ā

Ā By needĀ

49ers

ramsĀ

Ravens

Ā

others could based on team qb depth

I was never a Mayfield fan or believer, but it sucks to see him get done so dirty by the Browns that if effectively ruins any shot at a pro career.

Ā

I'd almost feel bad, if he didnt already have millions of dollars to fall back on.

I'm glad there's no more Baker Mayfield commercials.Ā  Those were grueling.

Houston? Doesnā€™t seem too likely. They arenā€™t trying to win either. Itā€™s why they put Kyle Allen in. Itā€™s why they rein in their best player (Pearce) at key points and donā€™t use him.Ā

You can't.Ā  Even though he has flamed out you've got to kick the tires on Mayfield.Ā  You need a guy who has played in big games, even if it's just to manage the game behind that defense.

Ā

Ā

Agree. Nothing I saw out of Pudy last night suggests to me that he can be enough to get the 49ers where they want to go.Ā

What kind of collusion is this?! There has to be some sort of weird back door handshake happening here.

Ā Iā€™d bet Bakerā€™s agent asked for his release, itā€™s obvious it didnā€™t work out, and with an opening in SF, itā€™s a good opportunity for him to get on the big stage AGAIN, to try to regain some sort of value. Ā  Iā€™m 100% sure SF will put in a claim for him, but thereā€™s a lot of teams that could do it ahead of them, so who knows if it will work out for them. Ā Hell, if Iā€™m Seattle, Iā€™m claiming him, JUST to screw SF.Ā
Ā

I think Purdy looked great, seemed completely unflappable, but to take a rookie Ā 7th round QB and expect a deep run into the playoffs, when they have gone all-in on this season, is a major question. Ā They need a vet in a hurry and Josh Johnson is not the answer. Ā Iā€™d let it ride with Purdy for now, but if he gets shaky, you need somebody to at least try to save the boat.

Ā

The Texans will have the 1st pick and will take the best QB in the draft.Ā  Why would they need Mayfield?

They need the best backup QB who can help the rookie and that surely is not Mayfield.

Ā

The only QB needy teams below the Colts are the Saints (who don't have a 1st round pick) and the Panthers.

I think they would be foolish not to go for QB#2 in the draft.Ā  Keeping Matt Ryan will ensure that will happen.

IMO.

Remember, a lot of his salary was handled by Cleveland this year in order to trade him:

Ā

"Mayfieldā€™s deal, which runs through the upcoming 2022 campaign, is worth a total of $18.8 million. Of that total, the Browns have agreed to pay $10.5 million with the Panthers footing just $5 million of his base salary. The remaining $3.5 million, as agreed upon by Baker himself, has been trimmed per Mike Garofolo."

Ā

So I believe, at most, teams would be on the hook for whatever little amount remains of that $5M. We're well past halfway of the season, so you're looking at like $1.5-2M tops. Probably wont sign a QB for any less than that.

Colts?Ā  Texans?Ā  He would be a veteran arm with league experience.Ā  Believe he is from TX too so Houston makes sense.

Ā

I would think Houston would try to nap him seeing how they have nothing to lose. He can at least run the ball better than Mills.Ā

Why would they take any chance to win games and give up the overall #1 pick?

Ā

Good points about Houston. Having the #1 pick changes things, for sure.

Ā

I guess they could bring him in now to get familiar, re-sign him to a cheap deal, and have him around so the rookie isnt forced into action too quickly. The rest of that team stinks so they have a lot of building to do before any rookie QB would stand a chance of surviving. Mayfield could be that bridge, and compete.

Ā

But good points.

I donā€™t think you were watching then. Ā He played very well, on what had to be next to zero practice time, against a really good D. Ā I was super impressed. Ā That WCO style is similar to what he ran in college, I think he could absolutely take the reins and do well. That said, they need a real back up plan right away. Ā  Josh Johnson is a known commodity and he ainā€™t the guy you want. Ā Iā€™d take Baker on, with the full disclosure heā€™s a complete desperation move IF Purdy starts to struggle. Ā  Baker should be able to do more, but we all know he goes brain dead too, so itā€™s a bad situation for the 9ers no matter how you shape it. Ā Itā€™s too bad the trade deadline is passed, they could have made a play at somebody, honestly wouldnā€™t have been shocked if they tried to grab Keenum had they had a chance, that ship has sailed. Ā  This is the reality of the league, they made a push to win this year and lost their QB late in the season. Ā Big bummer. Ā If they could get their hands on a guy like Keenum, Tyrod, etc, you would feel like they might still have a shot.Ā
Ā

One last interesting option would have to be the list of Retired QBs at this point. Ā Who is in shape and would be willing to go for it, have to think Breese or Rivers, hey maybe even Fitz would be tempting for them and a shot for the player to get a ring.. will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Maybe. I also think it was a bit one of those days where they just played poorly. I mean I never bought them as a true contender so maybe I see it through that prism.Ā

Wow.Ā  He was pretty much everyone's #1 QB coming out, although there certainly was a lot of room to argue.Ā Ā

Ā

My sense of the guy is that he isn't great in the locker room.Ā  I think he's too much of a me-first guy.Ā  Ā And although he's shown that he can be a pretty good playmaker, he's not a big-time thrower.Ā  Obviously, he can't throw like Allen, but he can't throw like Mahomes, either, or like Burrows or Herbert.Ā  If you don't make any eye-popping throws, it's pretty hard to be big success at QB in the NFL.

Ā

My take is that no one who's looking an answer at QB is likely to be interested.Ā  Can't see why Houston would bet on Baker instead of someone in the draft, and why would you want in camp as your rookie is working his way in.Ā  Colts shouldn't want to take a run an another retread.Ā  Rivers then Ryan then Baker?Ā  No.Ā  Not the Ravens.Ā  Ā They have their #1, and Huntley fits better as a backup in their offense.Ā Ā

Ā

The 49ers are a different situation.Ā  They've been looking seriously at a Super Bowl run this season, and now they need someone who can run their offense.Ā  They may or may not like Baker for the long run, but if they may very well want him for the short run.Ā  Ā

Ā

Look at it this way:Ā  If someone told you at the start of the season that after week thirteen, you'd be 8-4, leading your division and in excellent position to make the playoffs (93%), and they asked you what you'd like to do from a personnel point of view, you'd say, "whatever I possibly can do to make myself better, this year."Ā  Ā That's why they went out and got McCaffrey.Ā  Ā So, here they are, staring at the playoffs, and needing a QB.Ā  Ā I think in that situation, you go get the very best QB you can find.Ā  Colts might let you trade for Matt Ryan, but, no thank you.Ā  Jets might give you Flacco or Zach Wilson.Ā  Broncos might give you Russell Wilson.Ā  Ryan Fitzpatrick might hang up his mike and come off the sideline.Ā  The choices just aren't very good.Ā Ā

Ā

Baker, you actually could plug and play and have a shot at winning ball games down the stretch.Ā  By the time the playoffs start, he'd be integrated into the system.Ā  Ā He has the mobility Garropolo lacked, he's got an arm for at least the intermediate passing game.Ā  Ā He's a gamer.Ā Ā
