Only changes I'd make is Morris over Sweeney and if OBJ signs maybe you trade Hodgins to the Giants. I don't think they cut Kumerow because of ST.  Could also make a case for trading Crowder and keeping Hodgins for his size and he's finally able to show skills

Do you have 52 players? Morris for Sweeney. Add either Bobby Hart or cam Lewis , or Giles Harris for 53rd player

yes add Hart as 9th OL.  OBD has always had at least 9 every year of McBeane administration

Right so cut all 3! Then you can keep Blackshear on your 53 to ensure we succeed on every 2pt conversion attempt

So I'm gonna take a bit of a different angle - looking at the salary cap

I think this is a pretty good starting place, actually.  Changes (indicated in red above)

1) Blackshear -> PS, Gilliam counted as an RB (FB) per Dorsey interview

2) Morris added as a 3rd TE.  I personally think we might see an OJ Howard trade and keep Morris and Sweeney, but, unsure so I kept Howard and Morris for now

3) Ford traded and replaced by Bobby Hart (sorry guys)

So now, let's look at which guys who are in the top-51 currently would be gone:

Andre Smith (suspension) - $0.363M (6/17 of $1.03M)

Duke Johnson (cut)           -   0.920M

Greg Van Roten (cut)         -   0.895M

Jordan Miller (cut)              -  0.965M

Cam Lewis (cut)                 -0.895M

Matt Barkley (cut)              -0.920M

Current top-51 cap space per Spotrac: $4.156M

Added by the above cuts:                       $4.958M

Now we have to look at the next 8 guys who will now count in the 53 man roster:

Tommy Doyle $0.825M

Tyrel Dodson $0.895M

Dane Jackson $0.825M

Damar Hamlin $0.895M

Khalil Shakir  $0.705

Matt Araiza $0.705

Christian Benford $0.705

Isaiah Hodgins $0.705

Quintin Morris $0.705

(Ike Boettger won't count against the roster, but his salary will still be paid and will count against the cap, so we will have 54 players counting against the cap)

Need to subtract from our cap space: $6.965M

Estimated cap space remaining on the 53 man roster: $2.15M

I give up on understanding whether or not the team needs to include the practice squad this year and how many people can be on it.

I googled.  But, if it's 16 players and we're relatively evenly split between rookies, players with more than 2 years experience, and players who draw the maximum pay, we would need something like $4.17M for the practice squad.

If we were to trade OJ Howard and keep Tommy Sweeney on the roster, that would save $1.98M for Howard and cost $0.965M for Sweeney, so save $1M

Beane has said in the past that he likes to go into the season with ~$3-5M to cover any need to sign injury replacements.  So he's gotta find a couple of million somewhere.

I did this very same exercise with sportrac, using same players as you. Once I cut it to 53 players it shows $4,5M cap space. I have no idea how does that account for Boettger so not sure if I need to substract his $1M.

So little different numbers. Biggest differences are Duke Johnson (only $650K savings) and Andre Smith over $1M in savings. No idea how it will work with Smith. My assumption was that we have two options - cut him altogether, or put him on initial 53 then he gets suspended and we gain roster spot (?). But I don't think we can afford doing that (and that we will be willing to do that for him) so I guess he is cut. Correct me pls if I am wrong.

Sportrac shows different cap hits than you on most players btw.

Anyway, it still shows more cap space than you calculated.

My understanding of the Smith situation is as part of the cutdown - he moves to the Suspended list.  He does not have to go onto the 53 man roster or anything.

Once he slides on to the suspension list - his salary goes away for the next 6 weeks.

The Bills do not need to count his salary in the cap, BUT they will need to prepare because at the end of the 6 weeks - they will need to activate or cut him and if they activate - his remaining salary will need to be accounted for.

That will all be part of what BBB will need to look at to figure out the cap.  He has the 53 man roster, IR, PUP, PS, and suspended players once they return.

Andre Smith actual gives the bills a potential spot to add a young player and then cut them in 6 weeks if you need a LB or cut Smith and save cash at that time.

With Mancz, Doyle & Brown all being some variation of the walking wounded, I think there should be 1 additional lineman.

Probably Hart.

Early in the season, with higher temps, the ball will carry so I think Bass will get the go ahead to pound the ball on kickoffs.

This will allow cutting/trading Matekevich for the cap savings.  Smiley will have a few weeks to get the kickoff return team in order.

Kumerow is out for soreness though I think Hodgins has come close enough anyway for them to say goodbye to Kumerow.  Hodgins will still need to lay it all out there on Friday.

so I think Kumerow, Matekevich are gone

replace with Hart and Spector.

be nice to figure out a way for Cam Lewis to stick.  He’s a good ball player.

Not a bad roster with couple question marks (as with any fan roster).

Did you omit Matakevich by accident or do you think he will be cut? I really doubt that.

Hell would freeze before Hodgins fetches 4th round. If Beane pulls some magic trick then maybe 6th.

I doubt they'll cut him too but I believe he would save a few mil against cap?  If he stays then Spector goes to PS but I bet he gets claimed.

Tough calls. I'd really like to have Blackshear on the roster too.  They may think long and hard about keeping him if he shows out again

tomorrow night.

Never know, Daboll could love the guy and Giants just lost a WR

Couple of minor quibbles.  Boettger is already on PUP inactive- he will not be put on IR until sometime in the season if at all.

The inactive PUP means 4 games where he can’t practice at all.  The Bills then have I believe up to 6 weeks to activate him (which moves him to active PUP), but not a member of the 53 or they can IR him at that point.

If they shift him to active PUP - I believe the Bills then get 3 weeks to allow him to practice and not count on the roster and during those 3 weeks at any point - they can move him to the active roster (part of the 53), keep him on active PUP for the 3 weeks, or move him to IR.  At the end of the 3 weeks - it is either active roster or IR.

So the earliest they have to think about Ike is after week 4, but they have until week 10 - I believe before they need to act on him and then they have 3 more weeks to get back to speed - so really the Ike decision may not come until week 13 and may depend on o-line health.

The other small quibble is you have Stevenson (PUP) and that is not an option for him since he was on the active roster to start camp.  He will need to either be IR (pre 53 and done for the year), on the active 53 and moved to IR once everyone clears where he can be activated after week 4, on the active 53 with no IR, or cut and tried to go to the PS.  PUP is not an option from my understanding.

I have minor quibbles with the roster, but overall it is fine based on what we know - I want to see Friday’s game to finalize my last few spots based on what groups they roll out and who they try where on the field and on special teams.

Saw this quote on Twitter and thought it was spot-on:

Last season for the Bills:

WR6 caught 2 passes

RB4 didn't have a carry

TE3 didn't have a catch

Keep this in mind when you're saying the Bills should prioritize players at these positions over Jake Kumerow and Taiwan Jones who combined for 570 Special Teams snaps

I think your projection is pretty spot on.  Brandon Beane has said if you arent a starter, you better be good at 3-4 phases special teams.  Quintin Morris has been one of leaders in special teams play this preseason-29 plays I believe I heard on Joe Marino's podcast.  OJ Howard has never played special teams.  Morris has been the surprise of the camp.  And coaches have been raving about Sweeney.  Knox-Sweeney-Morris is my prediction for Bills TEs

So last spot IMO comes down to Hodgins, Spector, Lewis, McCloud,Blackshear or Duke

For example here is Sal Capaccio's 53-man.

I don't see them keeping Morris on the active roster.  I think he's one who can slide onto the practice squad.

Some of the tough decisions have been deferred - Andre' Smith is suspended 6 games, Boettger on PUP - what happens if they're activated?

I think they may keep Lewis and put Tre White on PUP.

The only thing I will add - I see the TE3 as a choice between a back-up for Knox in Morris (more open and fluid in routes - less a blocker) and a back-up for Howard in Sweeney- less athletic more blocking traits.

It is the reason I believe Morris started last game as TE1 with Allen - Knox was not available.  They have also been trying Morris in blocking roles - see as a lead blocker on the long Moss run versus Indy - where Morris was stuffed.

I think they like Morris, but he is limited and feel at least Howard and Sweeney can play in line and slightly in space.

I myself lean toward Morris as losing Knox means you lose a big weapon and I would rather replace that and use Gilliam/Doyle when blocking is needed.

Gracias. Yeah, I didn't read about the Araiza news until this morning. Whether or not the kid is innocent I think you've gotta cut him. It's just so gross and heinous to have that kind of black cloud hanging over the team. Let alone the poor woman who suffered, yeesh. Sorry, Matt, you done f*%@$d up. Especially on a team led by culture king Sean McDermott, can't have that stuff.

I agree it's unlikely they keep 4 TEs. But it sounds like they're high on both Sweeney and Morris - and the Giants would likely sign either/both if cut. I think it's more likely they're leaning toward keeping both Sweeney and Morris on the 53 and shopping Howard.

Cam Lewis is the interesting fringe player especially now that they're working him at safety.

The choice is Smith/Spector when he's activiated. I don't think Boettger plays this season, perhaps injury settlements or outright release.

Agreed, but athletically speaking he is more similar to Howard than Knox and Morris is more athletically similar to Knox.

If it was me and I was keeping 3 TEs - I keep Morris over Sweeney because I think Sweeney easily makes it to the PS if needed.

I frankly think Howard is toast.  He was playing at the very end of the game.

Sweeney is a big solid guy  at 6'5" 251 and looks like he should be a great blocking TE.

But is he?

I saw him get totally pwned at times today, and other times when I've watched him, his body and placement is all wrong for good leverage.

Sweeney was actually an accomplished receiver at Boston College and the concern pre-draft was that his blocking needed a lot of technical development.

On the other hand in some glimpses I saw, Morris actually looked solid as a blocker.

Tommy Sweeney can not block. No ides where this idea comes from but people have said it for 3 years now at this time lf year and he is utterly, utterly dreadful at it.

Thank you.  That is what I have seen.

I think it arises because he's big and solid and looks like he ought to be able to block.

I think Howard is also toast. I don't love us keeping 4 TEs and then let's not forget Gillam. That allows usay e the leeway to keep an extra WR or Blackshear.

I'd rather cut the cord on Howard and bring in a couple PS TEs to develop.

Is Howard PS eligible?

Releasing Howard would cost us more than $2.6m in dead money, and is $1.945m salary is fully guaranteed.  I think he's staying.

There’s no way Reggie Gilliam doesn’t make this team :)

Should have noticed that! I fear for Duke Johnson, though think I would prefer to drop Stevenson to the practice squad.

Stevenson is hurt. They can IR stash him. Duke is an easy cut because he’s a vested veteran so isn’t subject to waivers if they want to do any handshake deal roster shenanigans.

Thank you - so there may be a way we can keep Johnson without having him as part of the 53?
