Your thoughts

I think you did a pretty good job!

A few notes:

At TE:

Joe Buscaglia points out that it isn't so clear that Howard is #2 on the TE depth chart right now. With Knox gone yesterday, Morris got 5/6 snaps with the 1s, whle Sweeney and Gilliam took the 6th.  Howard ran with the 2's.   So I wouldn't be too shocked if Beane were to try to trade Howard and keep Morris or Sweeney.  I was hoping we'd upgrade our TE depth chart but to date, Howard has not shown that he's the upgrade.

At OL:

Tommy Doyle was seen wearing a boot after being injured in the Colts game.  I hate to say it, but Bobby Hart has been taking snaps at guard.  Don't count out that Doyle might start the season on IR and Hart makes the team (don't shoot the messenger here folks).

At RB: I believe of past years, the Bills have only kept 4 RB.  Blackshear has become a fan favorite, but I think it's possible that the Bills keep Motor, Moss and Cook with Taiwan Jones for special teams.  If they do part with Jones or keep 5..I wouldn't totally bet against Johnson.

Couple places where your depth chart doesn't align with what playing time hints as the depth chart on DL and at WR

Overall, I think it's solid

am expecting more use of the double TE offense has me keeping one more TE Morris over Sweeney or vice versa and cutting Blackshear, 4th RB is a dead roster spot, and returns handled by Shakir (P) and Cook (KO)...expect several Bills to be waived picked-up or traded in next 7-10 days.

Its the pre-season....Denver didnt play any starters so the results were skewed somewhat and yes our backups played well, and that reflects good coaching, cohesive-teamwork not just talent...

The TEs have not shown up besides Knox, So Gilliam is likely the third. : (

I do think Bills wanted to run two TE sets but not sure after preseason it is a viable threat

I would be thrilled with this. We need to keep Hodgins, Blackshear, and Benford because they will never make it to the practice squad without being snatched up by another team.

Benford is a lock. He started the game last week and played very early in the 2nd game. Hodgins probably makes the team since they seem to be comfortable with McKenzie and Shakir on returns and Austin never got any return opportunities. That frees up a spot at WR. But either he or Kumerow would be released if Odell Beckham Jr. were to choose Buffalo.

But I definitely disagree with the idea that Blackshear would "never" make it to the Practice Squad. UDFA RB's who perform well late in Pre-Season games are a dime a dozen. I don't see him being scooped up by another team for their 53 man roster.

McDermott and Beane have always carried 3 RB's (Singletary, Cook, and Moss), a Special Teams "RB" (Jones), and a FB (Gilliam). And of that lineup, McDermott has always only dressed 2 true RB's on Game Day. The 3rd (whether it was Matt Breida or TJ Yeldon before him) wouldn't dress unless there was an injury or replacing a RB for poor play.

That roster spot will go to CB Cam Lewis (especially if White is going to miss time), TE Tommy Sweeney (if we're going to run 2 TE sets, we need to carry at least 3 TE's), or DT Brandin Bryant (we carried 11 DL to the 53 last season. Maybe we carry 1 less, but 2 is pushing it IMO).

I see no way all 3 of those players aren't here in favor of a 4th RB when McDermott doesn't use a 3rd unless of emergency. He'll take the place of Antonio Williams on the Practice Squad.

I think it is as good as any…. I don’t think they keep four true RBs and do keep 6 LBs but that’s me…. Blackshear has got the it factor. He can help anywhere, so I can’t fault your logic there at all….

I think I might really go with Blackshear over Moss. Maybe we can trade him?

or maybe we can trade Blackshear? IDK?

I don’t like the idea of losing Blackshear. I don’t think he hits our practice squad with that return ability.

I wonder if Howard is struggling to pick up the playbook. We always forget about that part of the game.

History is the Bills keep 6 LBs every year.  All the non-starters are ST guys.

If that happens again this year, then either Blackshear, Kumerow or Hodgins don't make the cut.

The 6th LB (Spector or Gilles-Harris) gets cut when Smith returns for the 7th game unless they look great.

My choice is Kumerow goes to the PS.  I agree with the rest.

Kumerow will be gone in a heartbeat.  Packers, Saints, whoever.  A known NFL commodity.  He won't be on any practice squad.

Your history is correct but Cook is a different type of RB. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

This is yet another reason to not have Gilliam on the roster. I would much rather dress Motor, Moss, Cook, and Jones.  Moss or one of the backup TEs can line up at FB. Waste of a roster spot.

Agree with many others, Bills won't carry 5 RB. Blackshear will not make the final roster.

They probably keep Spector as a 6th LB. Small chance they only go with 5 LBs and keep Morris. If Doyle is hurt Morris can play the role of blocking TE.

I'd cut Gilliam and keep Morris instead, but that is not going to happen.

Given the limited opportunities Austin has had, he probably will not make the final cut as the PR.  Hell maybe they just put Hyde back there and fair catch every punt. I'd be fine with that and not risk dumb penalties or a turnover.

Gilliam is a hybrid HB/FB.  He played TE in college and came in as an UDFA at TE.  He played snaps at TE when injuries forced him to last year, so he adds to the mix there if needed as a 3rd or 4th.  On STs, only one other player had more snaps, Matakevich.

I know. I get it and I know McD and Beane are not cutting a guy they just gave an extension too.

I'm just pointing out keeping him has consequences.

Is Gilliam the only player on the team that can play two spots? Surley Moss could play both RB and FB. And just about any of the TEs could line up at H-back or FB. Whoever is the swing OT can play 3rd TE. Bills have done that for years under McD.

I see your point, but I think Gilliam gives them stronger play than trying to plug an RB at FB and an OT at TE, and replace the second most snaps on STs.
