Fantastic news. Imho, this doesn't change our draft strategy.

To echo many others in this thread - where the heck is this money appearing from? (not that I care, just being curious)

This is future years and should lower the cap hit this year and maybe next.

Did not see that coming but looks like a good deal! I do worry about WRs not aging well these days and Diggs was banged up pretty much all of last year so that’s not a great sign, but glad he’s back!

I think Diggs/Adams style of WR ages much better than Tyreek Hill, so if they're going to lock up a WR who will be closing in on mid 30's by the end of the contract (should it fully play out), i'd much rather it be a technician rather than an athletic/speed guy.

I hate even going there, but a Gilmore acquisition could be the thing that moves the needle to a SB.

I know I sound like one of the guys that I poke holes in for madden talk.  I still love the idea of the Syracuse article yesterday where we swap #1’s, give next years #1, and a 3rd for the agiants 7th for sauce Gardner of still there at 7.  That’s what I prefer as cheap labor for five years.

What? No but he does need to start hitting on picks cause we can’t keep signing free agents. He also drafted josh and that gives a chance to win every year. We have to get cheaper at certain positions. That’s just a fact

you sign free agents every year and draft players every year. It's how you build a team and he does a very good job of drafting. Stop worrying about money and salary cap.

What? You did not see a contract extension for Diggs? I don't recall him being banged up at all last year. Seemed pretty healthy to me

Seems like they extended diggs now to free up some money for a cb…if I had to guess.

Really?? Assumed it was expected myself, at least at some point. I do recall seeing a couple posters that were saying they thought he would be traded for some reason (don't know the reason making one believe that)....

There was no way Diggs wasn't going to get taken care of eventually or traded imo

I LOVE it that both sides have intentions for Diggs to retire a Bill. Very excited to hear that.

The Adams/Hill deals are why people speculated that we might have to trade him.   That was all under the assumption that he'd want Tyreek Hill money.  Those of us who worried he'd demand that, myself included, were wrong.  This is a very fair deal.

Nothing is impossible in the world of the NFL. Even if most of us feel it is unlikely, we really dont know what Beane and Co. are thinking in the long term. Trading players is always an option, and worth the discussion in the offseason when we really have nothing else to talk about.

I talked about it a few times, but that doesnt mean I wanted or preferred it to happen. Only that it's one possibility, and if it did happen, what would the fallout look like. Especially if dude was going to ask for $30M starting immediately. We just didnt know.

Spotrac has us 18.1 million under the cap. Don't forget next year we will get some relief from the amount of dead money we have on the books.

Because they took Diggs' current cap hit off until they know what the new contract looks like.  I'd guess that they'd get to about $6-8 mil in cap space after the details are added for Diggs and Jones.  They need about $3 mil for the top 2-3 draft picks.

We already had that available. Remember the cap numbers change significantly once it shifts to only counting the Top-51. We were already expected to have the room to sign rookies earmarked. Any savings from this Diggs deal will likely (hopefully) go to more Free Agent signings.

Right but in both cases its not hard to see who is the odd man out. Milano was just restructured and he'd left us with ton of dead cap even if traded. Same with Hyde. Poyer/Edmunds are the ones who might not have a future with the Bills.

I agree that Knox/Oliver will be paid. Hopefully they will be both reasonable.

Poyer has been playing like his jock is on fire and tackling will put it out.

Edmunds has McDermott answering "yes" when the question is "do you need more splash plays from ...."

I’m not saying he’s done a bad job by any means. Just pointing out when you sign huge deals it means you need cheap draft picks to balance out those deals. Just an obvious point. He’s hit on plenty of draft picks before so I’m sure he knows he can keep doing it. Just don’t let him draft d ends for the love of god

@DrDawkinstein I don't believe your take is correct.  The top 2 picks are the only ones that are projected to impact the cap that uses the top 51.  They will count about $2 mil to the cap.  They are not included yet because they are not signed.

Prior to this extension they had about $200k, and Jones wasn't on the books yet.

Well I mean I was confident it wouldn't come to that and fully expected an extension sooner or later. However, I guess I can see why that would make some feel it could happen.

Speaking for myself though I never thought or was worried a bit that this would not get done

My point is that the numbers will all be significantly shifting around in the near future. So the graphics and reports and whatnot that show we had no money left, while technically accurate in this moment, will be changing. And it is only internally that Beane has the money earmarked, not that it would show up on any of these reports.

I think that was my point in the post you initially responded to.  Spotrac currently shows $18 mil in cap space because they took down Diggs' current $17.9 mil cap hit.  We won't know what they have currently until the contract details are made public and they still don't have Jones' contract up yet.  My guess, was that they'd have about $7 mil (+/- a mil) after we know the details. Take out $2 mil for the top 2 draft picks, leaves about $5 mil to add a CB if they desire. All guesses at this point, until we know Diggs' contract.

Interestingly, I was thinking yesterday that a Diggs extension just might happen soon because Beane needed to make room for the rookies,  and it seemed to be the logical move at this point.
