Chiefs 19m Over Salary Cap in 2021

We know it wont be any lower than $175M. I've seen $180M talked about recently, but no one is really sure yet. This article is pretty optimistic that it could be as high as $195M

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2020/12/06/optimism-emerges-regarding-2021-salary-cap/

Thanks for the link, I didn't find this one. There is at least some answer to my question:

"Time will tell what the league chooses to do. Although a projected cap typically is shared with all owners in December, the final decision isn’t made until late February or early March, through negotiations with the NFL Players Association. By then, the league will know more about whether the vaccine is being distributed and working properly, setting the stage for coffers being restored via ticket revenue in 2021."

If they really decide on cap in early March, I am curious if FA starts as usual. Last year it was 18 March. That gives GMs much less time to calculate things. Will be fun offseason.

Stop this.

Just a quick glance at their cap situation and I get them $20 mil under in 3 moves.

They have a huge benefit in that their big money guys are either expendable (OTs Fisher or Schwartz) or bonafide studs that they would have no problem restructuring to save money (DL Jones, DL Clark, S Matheiu)

I don't think they are as good at corner as you do... they have a good young slot corner and Fenton who has played fine but isn't a guy I'd want as my #1 outside corner. However, I do agree with you it is very unlikely value matches that need at #31 or #32. If their first pick is corner they have traded out of the first IMO. Tackle much more likely at their spot.

Sneed may be the #1.  He’s already the best CB we’ve had since Dale Carter, and I don’t see anything about him that would mean he can only play the slot.  Right now, there’s simply no reason to move him, as Ward and Breeland are very solid.  Ward will be the #2 as he’s still cost controlled and is solid.  Fenton is a slot guy for sure, and I’d have no concerns with him being a starter.  Mix in a couple of safeties who can cover in Mathieu and Thornhill, and the team is pretty well set.  You always need more CBs for depth, but there’s  plenty of holes that need to be addressed before Corner.  I would be stunned if they went that route in the first 2 or even 3 rounds.

I AM a Bills fan.  They are my 2nd favorite team.  I've been rooting for the Bills all year.  I was a Josh Allen hater that's been converted into a Josh Allen fan....If you had won the game sunday, I'd be chearing on the Bills to win it all.  I'll be cheering for you all again next year, except when you play KC.

Same here.  I didn’t post here much in the postseason before our matchup because I was hoping the Bills would lose before they got to us and obviously when we played them.  I didn’t want to post here while actively pulling against them, and I had the Bills and Ravens as the biggest threat to the Chiefs all season.

Bills fans deserve a championship.  As much as I want to win the next 20, if we only win 19 of them, I hope Buffalo gets the other one.

It's very easy to look at how that game transpired, and think we have miles to go to catch that team.

They're at a plateau right now, while we're still climbing.  Our trajectory is up. At best, theirs is level - but likely inching down, if not next season than the season after. They can't keep some of those difference-makers, and everyone knows it.

I think just a couple of players could have turned Sunday into a win - notably, an impact pass rusher, and a genuine starting RB (no disrespect to Motor, but he's not a 30 carry a game guy).  It doesn't seem like it, but a few plays could have really turned the outcome of what happened.

We'll get there.  It's rare you knock the bully off the hill w/ the 1st attempt.

KC's "best" window is now...that for sure.  But the window doesn't close for a while.  2023 is the year KC is really going to get pinched a bit by Mahomes contract....and even then, we dont' know what the cap will be in 2023 to be able to see how much of a pinch it is.

They can stay competitive as long as they have Reid and Mahomes - not unlike BB and Brady.

But they won't be a video game much longer.  I'm curious how they handle a few SB wins, too.  I don't think they have the psychotic driven thing that BB and Brady had, where they were just never satisfied.  I could see the Chiefs getting a bit happy if they win next Sunday.

You have to admit that there’s a good majority of your fan base who were once cool and now have turned into arrogant pricks.  I see it a lot online.  So many Chiefs fans have become the Patriots.

It may never be easier for bottom teams with a bunch of cap room to feast on players getting cut by teams way over the cap and not have to pay them a ton of money because not many teams have cap room and there are going to be a LOT of good players on the market teams simply can't afford. I see a lot of one year deals being done by players because they will wait to hit the market again when the cap starts going back up.  Could see a number of bad teams become good VERY fast by signing 5 or 6 really good players for cheaper than normal contracts.

They will be fine.  Guys will restructure and they will plug and play cheaper role guys. They wont pay $10M to aging role guys. They wont waste millions on special teams aces when they know you can just kick it out of the zone every time. I think the Bills will do the same when that day rolls around for them.

I would worry about Sneed outside in space. He does his best work in the mess in the middle of the field for me. He was moved to safety his final year at Louisiana Tech for that reason. Could he play outside? Sure but I think he is potentially a top end slot whereas I think he ceiling is lower outside. Ward and Breeland are both impending FAs though, right (though Ward maybe an RFA)? And I don't think either is a top end player. Breeland had a great year, no doubt, but I have a hard time trusting him to play that well again given his career history. I love Thornhill think he is fantastic and one of the young star safeties in the National Football League and obviously Mathieu is a stud. I just don't love their corner situation as much as you. I do think it is a need though I don't see them going there round 1.

I just saw a stat that the Chiefs defense leads the NFL in completion percentage, TD/INT ratio, and QB rating allowed on passes that travel 10+ yards.  They’re also outstanding, physical tacklers who can support against the run and even get after the QB on blitzes.  I’m not the least bit concerned about that position group, and the front office has shown the ability to find quality late in the draft and off the scrap heap.

The defense needs another LB and could use another Edge since Clark’s health issues seem to be severely limiting him.  They also need a WR and at least one T.  Coming into the season, it looked very likely that the 2021 season could be a step back while trying to retool the roster, but this rookie class has been a literal game changer.  The team found several players who will absolutely be starters or key rotational players for the next s several seasons at RB, LB, CB, DE, DT, and P, and we still don’t know what we have with our third round T who opted out (and was rehabbing from surgery anyway).  They’re also high on Keyes at CB for whom they traded back into the seventh round.

The team has its nucleus of stars locked up on big contracts, and they just secured low cost players in the draft to supplement them.  Amazingly, one of them has already turned out to be a star, and CEH and Gay have star potential.  I’m very bullish on this team’s ability to remain elite for the foreseeable future.  It’s pretty much the opposite of the Royals in 2004 and 2005 when you knew that there was no way to maintain any type of long term success.

The long term success is about Mahomes........anyone with a top 5 QB is set up for a long period of contention..........and Mahomes has the ability to become the GOAT.

But it's very common when you have a bunch of stud playmakers as the Chiefs do now to mistake the level of incoming young players who are protected/propped-up by those playmakers.

During the 90's when the Bills had a cast of HOF'ers they routinely drafted late and they seemed to nail tons of later picks.......... but as the playmakers aged it became clear that those guys weren't nearly as impactful as they looked while the playmakers were in their prime.

Now........with shorter rookie contracts it's even harder to keep teams together.

Not that the Chiefs haven't drafted well but don't mistake role players for difference makers.

Agreed. And that was my point really about Sneed. I like him, he has had a great rookie year, but how many nickel corners are difference makers in this league? Maybe he moves outside and continues to excel and proves me wrong. I think he could play out there but would be a role player on the boundary not a difference maker.

Sneed’s played about 80% of the snaps when healthy.

Yea he is a really good player. No doubt about that. But I don't think slot corners are difference makers as a rule and as discussed earlier I am a little more sceptical about his ability to excel on the boundary. I think he can play there but not sure he will be a star outside corner. If I am proved wrong about that then fair enough.

On the other hand though.....for example....Ryan Tannehill

2020 - 22 mil

2021 - 29 mil

2022 - 34 mil

2023 - 32 mil

Mahomes doesn't surpass Ryan Tannehill's cap number for 2 more years.....that is what KC is working with right now.  We aren't going away anytime soon.

with $7 to $10 Mil for rookies -- thats chump change.   Top players will eat the remainder up.

The drafting has been interesting.  Veach didn’t have a first rounder in year 1 due to the Mahomes trade.  That draft was a complete bust, and not a single player will get a second contract.  Year 2 also didn’t have a first round pick due to the Frank Clark trade.  It landed Thornhill (very good pick), Hardman (next season will tell us more on that one) and a few role players like Saunders and Fenton.  It was a decent draft, but it didn’t fill in the gaps left from the prior draft.  Year 3 was a home run.  We needed a lot of players who could eat up snaps to make up for 2018, and we got that in spades.  Every player drafted made the team (excluding Niang who opted out but will be back next season), two UDFAs made the team, and a third has seen action in 11 games with one start.

At least 6 of those players will on the roster long term with major roles (CEH, Gay, Sneed, Danna, Wharton, and Townsend) and it’s very likely that Niang will be as well simply due to draft position and need.Keyes has played well in limited action, but that remains to be seen.  By next season, I fully expect CEH, Gay, Sneed, Niang, Townsend, and likely Wharton to be starters while Danna will compete with Clark and possibly replace him as starter in 2022.

Landing a minimum of 6 starters in a single draft/UDFA cycle is tremendous for any team, let alone one with a Super Bowl roster that returned 20 starters.  If all of them were simply role players, that would still be a win.  That’s not the case, though.  Sneed is already one of our top 3 defensive players, and Clyde is our feature back.  Those two are already difference makers.  The rest have only been role players so far, and that’s fine.  They’re young, and they’re cheap...two of the best qualities role players can have.  If nothing else, they allowed us to avoid paying premium prices for JAGs in free agency to fill a roster.

I never quite understood this signing for KC.....Mahomes takes a guy like DeMarcus Robinson who only costs 1 million bucks...and gets Sammy Watkins production out of him.  I'd rather KC have signed a mid tier WR for 1/3rd the cost...

Sammy was their best WR statistically last year playoffs run. Actually he was #2 in receiving yards last postseason in whole league

Their dynasty looks to be very short lived :)

You clearly haven't seen their quarterback have you? Or their wide receiver that torched us? Or their tight end then torched us?  unless the bills can find a man press corner in the draft they can demolish Tyreek Hill off the line they're not going to beat them.

Doesn't this work against your argument?  You're already in a tight spot cap wise being 19m over with under 80% of a roster under contract, and Mahomes at the cheapest he'll be.  "Kicking the can" only gets harder and harder as your QB gets more expensive by the year.  It's like how people get trapped taking increasingly larger payday loans until they end up owing their entire paycheck to pay the small initial loan.

if the chiefs get 5 or so years in championship games, a hard rest for 2-3 years at .500 and then wrap with about 5 or so more of super bowl contention we’d all sign up for that for our team

I don't think you are understanding how inconsequential this is at this point.  All KC has to do is convert a bunch of roster bonus...that counts NOW...into signing bonus, wich they can spread out to later.  You might say they'll have to pay the piper someday....and that's partially true...but in reality, assuming the cap begins to grow again (and it will...becasue  the TV numbers just keep going up)  you are just kicking that money into later years when the cap is going to also be bigger.  Maybe in several years, they will have kicked enough down the road that they finally have to have a year of eating cap hits to get the books back in order, but we are talking YEARS from now....

Just saw a new write up on Sneed today.  It supports everything I’ve said about him and the Kansas City secondary as a whole.  Sneed isn’t a slot CB.  He’s a CB playing slot because that’s where he’s needed.  He played outside to start the season when Breeland was suspended for four games, and Sneed was clearly our best Corner the day he stepped on the field.  He was moved to the slot after Breeland came back because Breeland is most suited to play outside, but Sneed will eventually take over that spot.  In the meantime, the team plays nickel or dime 80% of the time, so he rarely comes off the field.

I’ve literally never been more impressed by a Chiefs rookie.  Dale Carter, Kareem Hunt, Marcus Peters, and Derrick Thomas all had great rookie seasons, and Sneed has been every bit as impressive as any of them to me.

If I am proven wrong and he is a star outside I will happily accept it. I think he is a stud slot. He is the modern big nickel.

Well they have 5 or 6 guys making over 15M.    Thats not sustainable.  If the contracts are structured to get out at a low cost they may move on from a few.

The scary part is that mahomes still isn't into the big part of contract next year.

I wish it signaled the dynasty was over, but when you have Mahomes, Kelce & Hill, you'll be in contention for quite a while.

At the very least, it'll hamper their ability to sign any big name guys going forward & will have to rely on the draft to get by. And if the salary cap really drops to $180 million, that'll be even tougher on them. Great news for us :)

KC also has CEH.  We are missing the 3rd part of a "big 3" on offense, as well as a great front 7 player like KC has.  I think we can get the RB in the draft, so we have Josh, Diggs, and RB; and then grab a DT/DE in FA.

KC will still be tough to beat every year for the reason you said.  Those 3 always give them a chance to win.

It won't be.

Under contract for 2021 already:

Mahomes

Honey Badger

Hill

Kelce

Edwards-Hellaire

Hardman

Thornhill

Sneed

Chris Jones

Others.

That's the core.  We will work in other young guys and JAGS around that group...like we already do.

You might say...but they only have 40 guys under contract now, AND they still have to shed 18 million in money just to get to even...and THEN they need to free up even more money to sign rookies and vets to get to 53.

All true.

And all easily done by converting salary to bonus money, then pro rating that out to future years and kicking the can on down the road.  If you believe the cap will grow again, this isn't a problem at all....

I don't really think KC will have a problem this coming year, but there will definitely be some tough decisions they'll have to make in the ensuing years.

As long as Mahomes, Kelce and Hill are in their prime playing at a high level, you'd be foolish to let them walk.  The issue might end up being Mahomes's contract in a few years.  It's team friendly now, but won't be in a few years.

Certainly, once we get into the bigger cap hits on Mahomes, you get roster construction challenges....I am sure when we get there...there will be some guys who leave, that will make it harder to win.

The Bills are getting ever closer to that same problem....

I'd say, and I am sure you'll agree with me....of all the problems to have....paying for the cap hits taken by a franchise QB...is one of the best ones.
