Maybe players should purposely catch covid now, so they don't during the season.

Probably not a medically sound idea, but I would consider it.

Like when we were young and our parents made us go play with the kid who had chicken pox.

You’re lucky. My parents made us play in traffic.

people will continue to test positive and be fine.  with no vaccine positive tests could continue forever.  You want to just keep all sports an everything closed until a vaccine?  insanity.

It is literally INSANE to worry about a global pandemic rather than people getting liquored up and jumping through tables.  People need to get their priorities straight.

You're not allowed to act like you care about lives if you support protests stemming from the murder of a man at the hands of the police?

Of course you are allowed.  By the same token, you shouldn't be welding up playgrounds where dozens of kids have been playing, if you're comfortable with thousands in close proximity in the protest. .

Per NFL.com

Need to call off the 2020 season imo. You can't socially distance in a team sport like football. Its inevitable that players will continue to test positive.

As much as I miss sports, I agree with you 100%.  What happens if during the NFL or MLB season, a few teams have players that test positive for Covid 19?  Do they forfeit their games for the next two to three weeks?

I live in Las Vegas.  Since the riots began and the implementation of Phase 2 that allowed some of the casinos to reopen, our number of new Covid 19 infections has sky rocketed.  I understand that the owners are loosing money, but so are millions of people across our country.

By trying to force reopening before it is safe, this will just push us back to a stay at home situation again and prolog the unemployment of many.

Just forget sports in 2020 and lets hope for a vaccine sooner rather than later.  Covid 19 is not going away anytime soon.  Just my very humble opinion.

I guess its a good thing that position was just invented by you after your 3rd consecutive retreat and "what about?".  Boring stuff, even for you.  You need about 137 more bouts with Big Cat before you're ready for prime time.

I actually stated that in my initial riposte to Logic, because we had this same conversation a week ago.

I miss Big Cat.  Did the heat maps eventually kill him?

Irv, I won’t comment on this one anymore, but curious, did you’re parents give you three scissors to juggle?  Now that would be funny.  Just kidding and like you’re avatar.  I enjoyed watching him growing up as we had what 5 channels and two TVs.  2,4,7, Canadian channel  (loved that one in the summer as they had the Flinstones at one point when I wasn’t out playing), and channel 29.  29 was awesome for at that time the reruns of Star Trek, Brady Bunch and so on.

The virus will dictate everything.  Some are taking it seriously and some are not. It wouldn't surprise me if baseball, basketball and football are all lost this year. A vaccine probably won't be ready till December or January. Forget about a 2nd wave. We haven't even come down from our initial curve. Countries like Italy & Spain have bottomed out on their first curve yet nationally we're just going straight across. They're now projecting 200k dead in the US by Oct 1st. Every time a player tests positive it will freak out the rest (players, coaches & personnel).  Just human nature. I pray I'm wrong but I see MLB, NBA & NFL in serious jeopardy.

They weren't scissors.  They had me juggle cobras.  Built up a hell of an immunity.  As far as the Cowboys and Texans go Researchers are now studying the effects of a) getting your ass solidly kicked by the Bills and b) horrible playoff officiating as potential causes of COVID-19.

If all of our parents had done the same, we’d have herd immunity by now.  As it is, were years away from a vaccine.  I’m drinking fish tank cleaner just to be safe.

Yeah sad to see. Just hope there will be a Buffalo Bills team come the 2021 season. Who knows with all this insanity going on. Been hearing and reading a lot of chatter of people Boycotting the NBA and NFL recently. Can this be true? Anyone read the same?

It is inevitable that players will test positive. The college kids have as well as they return for workouts at school. They are quarantining anyone who tests positive. Not cancelling the season.

smart teams will have their teams work closely together now.

any player actually getting sick (which is unlikely due to their age and health) can be treated now

Acquire herd immunity to avoid problems later

The goal should be to get the whole team exposed in a controlled environment

Oh the panic, absolute panic.

SO THEY HAVE IT?  They are world class athletes with world class medical facilities, the NFL wont have any shortage of tests for it, most of them will get the virus and barely feel any symptoms.  Now they have to have at least an 85 IQ not to to visit the in firmed,  old folks and nursing homes while during infectious stages.

Or they pass it on to a buddy who passes it to his girlfriend who passes it to her friend who passes it to her father who passes it to his cousin who happens to work in a nursing home.  Now five people in a nursing home die because this world class athlete unknowingly passed it to his girlfriend.

Really??? I am not surprised. I don't see the NBA having a season way too much chaos. And the NFL now with players being tested positive and the backlash online by fans who are saying the will Boycott the NFL it doesn't look good for sports. What a shame! lets hope NCAA Football is going to have a season.

RNA/DNA don't lie, and they say that you are incorrect.  Coronaviruses of various kinds have been around for decades, but the specific coronavirus  Sars-CoV2 that causes covid-19 disease has not been circulating in humans for decades.  Genomic epidemiology traces it back to a single introduction in Nov/Dec 2019.

The covid-19 testing is NOT a general "catch all test", it uses RT-PCR (a technique to amplify RNA to amplify 3 specific regions on 3 specific genes that are unique to the Sars-Cov2 virus that causes covid-19 disease.  It is an EXTREMELY specific test, by design.

It is not uncommon for the same virus to cause severe symptoms in some people, and mild or no symptoms in others.  It is estimated that 20% of people infected with seasonal influenza are asymptomatic.  Polio virus was a Beast to contain (and is still a beast in the countries where it's still endemic) because up to 70% of those infected were asymptomatic, 25% experienced symptoms like a mild cold, while 5% developed a severe and sometimes paralytic disease

Please don't spread misinformation or broaden the discussion to make every thread a "covid-19 disease discussion thread".  General covid-19 discussion may take place in OTW in the designated threads or in PPP.  Thank you.  Further posts that ignore this request will be deleted.

Thanks a lot, Hapless; refreshing to see some real science here. I know you asked for no more Covid-19 posts, but your message is important, and I'd like to back you up.

Politics and sports aside, Sars-CoV2 is very real and very deadly, especially to the elderly and others with weakened immune systems or serious pre-existing conditions. We all know someone with such a condition. I had an internist (and old friend) from Buffalo General Hospital present (remotely) to my medical school class a few weeks ago, and she was fairly shell-shocked with what she had seen and dealt with in clinic. Things have also been rough here in Boston-area hospitals. Sars-CoV2 is absolutely NOT a "common cold" virus. This is unambiguous: Hapless explained nicely how RNA viruses (including Covid variants) can be precisely "fingerprinted" using reverse transcriptase polymerase-chain reaction (RT-PCR; look up on Wikipedia if interested; actually quite a simple idea).

So I want to echo Hapless' appeal to please not spread misinformation! If you think you have some hot take, then please share your peer-reviewed journal citation, and maybe also your scientific/medical credentials. (And yes, for what it's worth, I am a bona fide medical researcher -- and I expect Hapless is as well.)

Yes that has been discussed a lot. It will not be a normal season. But they will still play because TV money.

So would everybody be o.k. if we won the Superbowl this year, even if it comes with a big Covid astrick next to it?

Right now I think all there will be is some college football along with golf & nascar. Unless someone pulls a miracle vaccine out of their butt Sept 1st?

I think somehow they need to make masks part of the uniform. The latest research shows that masks do a very good job of preventing the spread on their own. There was some hair salon that opened and two stylists tested positive, together they had served 140 customers and not a single customer tested positive because everyone wore a mask. If they can have everyone involved with the team wearing a mask the season can go on normally.

For all of you desperate to watch live sports again, I thought I'd suggest you check out some New Zealand rugby.

We've pretty much eliminated Covid-19 from here, so our stadiums are open to fans.  It may not be "American Football", but it can be pretty great too.

Though this might go a bit missing with the, shall we say, impasssioned rejections of other peoples position, the major thing the NFL has going in it's favour is it's KO time.

There are professional sports leagues starting up all round, in both countries that have been reported to have handled Covid well and those that are said not to.

There is still plenty of time to see the fallout in those leagues, for the NFL to learn lessons, see how if and they work, and to make adjustments if needed. We should have better indicators too if there is to be a second (or series of) wave(s).

Wear masks as part of their uniform?

Are you talking about athletes?

If so that, right there, is some high quality humor.

Jesus Christ. Thank you!

Gotta keep that social distancing going....while crowds of hundreds march in the streets holding hands. No issues there.?

The people who are dying are typical unhealthy, older fragile human beings with 4 or 5 other comorbidities. If a professional athlete gets this virus they are more than likely fine. The coaches are really the ones at risk. Perhaps a protocol of tests every 3 days and some sort of strict mandatory quarantine for each team while the season goes on.... but I have no doubt they’ll play the season.

I’m over the social distancing myself, but this virus is far more scary than many want it to be. Most people are fragile, and older, but the fact that 1,000’s of 30 somethings have been placed on ventilators is frightening. Life is better when we choose to ignore that though, I get it. I just don’t see how a season works, unless we as a nation change our quarantine/exposure policies.

would be a PR nightmare to have the NFL hoard hundreds of thousands of tests while sick people with bad symptoms in america STILL can't get tested

we still have NO IDEA what the virus is going to look like come October/november during flu season. we are 2 weeks away from July and cases are still spiking all over the country.

If the choice is wear masks or don't get paid because the sesson is cancelled, they'll fall in line.
