Who is your roster “dark horse”?

Recommended Posts

With mini-camp approaching, which “long-shot to make the roster” player are you predicting to be on the active roster week 1? Don’t just drop a name but give your rationale.

Given most late round picks don’t make the roster, I’m going with Jaquan Johnson (S). Although the Bills have depth at safety, Johnson is a typical Beane “high ceiling” draft pick. I think Johnson makes the roster primarily as a Special Teams contributor but moves up the depth chart at safety as the season wears on.

I’ll say Daryl Johnson. 7th round EDGE. After Hughes Murphy and Lawson depth is up for grabs. A long athletic prospect who ill say gives Yarbrough and Harold a run for their money.

I agree with you for the same reasons.  From what I have been able to read about him, he is very quick off the ball and will be more of a speed rusher than the other guys on the roster.

David Sills V, I'm not sure how good our receiving corps are so I think he has a good shot if he shows up in the preseason, he seems to have the intangibles and after listening to him on OBL sounds like a good kid and someone I'm rooting for.

Good call!  He reminds me a little of Jordy Nelson.  You aren't sure why he keeps getting open, but he does.  He also, based upon his college career, finds a way to get into the endzone.

Yep, I came to say Sills. I think he beats out Duke & goes on to surprise this season.

I think Jaquan Johnson makes the roster relatively comfortably. We don't have much depth at his spot, Siran Neal is being looked at as a slot corner which might remove a barrier and Johnson was a special teams star in college. Unless he totally sucks in camp as a safety he is on the 53.

My dark horse was Tyrel Dodson. His off field issues make him an even darker horse now I suspect but on pure on field I expected him to be among our 6 best linebackers.

I think Christian Wade (the British rugby player) will get put on the practice squad this year but would not be shocked if he is active at some point in 2019 or 2020, especially as a STer or gadget guy.

If Wade is assigned to the practice squad, he won't be eligible to be activated in 2019 (as per the international pathway program rules).  Given how much he needs to learn about NFL football, he is likely to remain on the practice squad this year, but his physical talents may land him on the roster in 2020.

I feel the same about Dodson... I was super excited when we got him. Him and Dawson Knox were the 2 guys i was super excited about other than the obvious Ed Oliver pick...

I think the Bills will carry four RBs, and Senorise Perry makes the 53. They're going to take special teams very seriously this season, and Perry will be a core contributor. But, I also think we may see him on the field for some short yard  situations.

But, here's an even darker horse: Christian Wade. I believe he will transition to the NFL, and I believe he will be a great RB. I certainly don't think he will make the 53 in September, but he will be on the practice squad, as he will have his own additional open spot, per the International Player Pathway Program. And, if we end up going down a running back in the regular season (not unlikely), we could absolutely see him on the field later in the season. Watch the guy's game tape playing rugby. He's incredibly strong, shifty, and has exceptional acceleration. I can't wait to see what he can do with pads on.

Ray Ray.

Man if I am correct, who gets cut?  WR is a fascinating camp battle.

lets say Ray Ray, Smokey, Beasley, Foster make opening day roster- that’s 4 spots out of probably 6, no more than 7.  That leaves Zay, Roberts, Duke, Sills, Bolden jr, Mckenzie, Phillips, Scott to battle for 2 or 3 spots!

My backup pick is Senorise Perry.  Our special teams was shoddy last season.  We can use Perry’s ST skills

Eli Harold.

Was drafted in the 3rd round by the 9ers in 2015 when he was just 21 years.  He has done little  since, though he did have 4 sacks and 4 hurries playing just 19% of the snaps for the Lions last year.

Has played mostly as a 3-4 OLB in the NFL but the Bills will use him as a 4-3 DE which might be more natural for him.

Beat me to it. I think TJ Yeldon will be gone and Perry will stay.

I like Duke Williams. I know most people are on the Sills V hype train, and I'd be perfectly happy to see the kid make the team, but don't forget how dominant Williams was in the CFL. If he can keep focused on ball and stay out of trouble, he has the ability to be elite.

Mike Love.

He can do what Shaq Lawson can do versus the run and I think he has more pass rush potential; I could see Shaq Lawson being part of a trade.

Love was one of my picks to survive roster cuts in 'GunnerBill's Roster Thread' for 2018...I choose him as a "long shot", only because he's likely an afterthought to most fans.

It's crazy to put Ray Ray above Zay Jones, or Andre Roberts on the depth chart. They brought Roberts in as a return specialist-- he may not see a single offensive snap in most games. And Zay had more targets, and receptions than any other WR on the team, right up to the final game vs. Miami. I have to believe that Brown, Beasley, Roberts, Jones, and Foster are closest to locks. After that, the competition for the final roster spots will have to include their performance on special teams for them to have a chance.

I like the Sills and Johnson picks. If Johnson sticks around I can see him really becoming a Buffalo guy from how I know he was at the U.

Played through injuries, good leader. If he makes it here and the city embraces him as I think he would I can see him really being a Buffalo guy. I'm speaking in cliches I hate, but it's honestly what I think.

One would assume if he was playing OLB in a 3-4.

One might assume : )
But Bills are a solid 4- concept. If he is playing D line. I might guess he is a pass rusher.
so i was making a poor joke about Rex Ryan's exotic defenses . lol
Do not follow college ball and know near nothing of the fellow.

does TJ do kick/punt returns ?

There are no stats for kick returns for Yeldon. Perry had 18 kick returns for Miami over the last two years averaging over 20 ypc.

I don't really know anything about him, either. But, he did get four sacks last season with Detroit without any game starts. Not bad for a non-starter, I suppose.

...EXACTLY....when is the last time we've been faced with a "talent conundrum"?......certainly LONGER than I care to remember.....will be some talented football players in those final 37 cuts.....
