I think he would switch position to RB in Buffalo.  We need to keep the average age up after the draft!

can he run to the sidelines the first 2 plays and then disappear for most of the rest of the game?

42 on the Wonderlic and he still has wheels.  TE is already overfilled right now.  Edge is what we really need

I don't believe Ben Watson is the guy we need...but we definitely need a TE.

We don't have one legitimate, proven TE on this roster that ANY defense would be worried about covering. Tyler Kroft, Jake Fisher, Jason Croom, Dawson Knox, and Tommy Sweeney? Nobody besides Bills fans even know who they are. The five of them have a combined 91 receptions for 963 yards.

I'm a big old optimistic homer, but I don't understand why the Bills would have any interest in this dude.

Kroft, Knox, Croom, Sweeney, Fisher. That's plenty.

that's 2 eras where the Pats exploited the TE position and the Bills didn't notice at all

Former Saints’ TE Benjamin Watson, who had intended to retire, is in New England today visiting with the Patriots, per source. Watson also is considering the Chiefs, Bills and 49ers. His retirement didn’t last long.

that is exactly what the Bills need. A retired TE is an upgrade. lol........

Maybe they can bring "end zone two stepper" Robert Royal in for depth.

This.  He's never been more than a #2 TE, even in his prime, which has long since passed.

He's amassed 1750 (30%) of his career total of 5885 yards in the last 3 years alone, along with 12 TDs.

That's more gas in the tank than any TE on this team (forget this roster) has shown in a decade or more.   He would walk through the door and be the #1 on this roster right now.

Re-read your post. The answer is right there. All of those guys are extremely young - he is a seasoned vet that can show them the ropes as a mentor and be another great locker room presence.

I would love this signing.

Plenty of...what?  2 are rookies (1 might make the team), 1 is a 2nd round bust at T who has never had an NFL pass thrown at him.  The other 2 are barely TE 2 or 3's.

Almost half those yards were from his last season with the Saints, 3 years ago.  Over the past 2 seasons he's amassed 922 yards and 6 TD's, and had 400 and 2 last year.

Suffice it to say that at 38 years old his prime is in the rear view mirror.  And his prime was never that prime.

We have to many Tight Ends already, they are spilling out the door into the parking lot, causing a huge mess

922 yards in 2 seasons is good output doc.  Who’s the guy on the roster with those numbers?

Your original statement was stone cold wrong.

While our TE room is underwhelming, I can’t believe you, of all people, would be banging the table for a 39 year old TE that was bleh with Drew Brees throwing him the ball.

Im glad he’s back with the Pats and not in buffalo.  The only thing he’d be good for imo, is texting the kids around the ropes.

Veteran tight end Benjamin Watson is putting his retirement on hold, and he's coming home to do it. The New England Patriotsintend to sign the 38-year-old Watson -- one of their first-round draft choices in 2004 -- to a one-year deal worth up to $3 million, sources tell ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Think him missing NFC Championship Game made a difference in Saints losing to Rams?

Good leader. Interesting for a year with him and Gore. Good veteran presence is not a bad thing with a young QB.

Edit: He’s washed up. Glad he’s with the Pats.

He's been a middling TE who has bounced-around a lot.  My statement was less wrong than you including his outlying career-season 3 years ago with the Saints was disingenuous.

And 462 yards a season the past 2 years is bottom half of the league.  But more concerning is that his trend over the past 3 years had been going the wrong way and he'll be close to 39 years old when the season starts.

You said "his prime has long since passed".

That was easily proven incorrect as he has been productive for the past 3 seasons despite his age.

His "past 2 years" have yielded more yards than any of the bums they have on the roster right now.  He still had 11+ YPC last year.

Numbers are fun and so are sample sizes.

That said, why don’t we look at his production  over the past 5 seasons. His average goes way down. He only had 136 yards in 2014, so he could regress. I hope he regresses at least.

He's a high character guy but old.  May or may not be a good pickup for you guys.  I don't see a ton of risk.

Id rather see what Knox, Croom, Sweeney, etc can do than sign a 1 year guy who's 38/39.

Makes more sense for the Pats than for us.

They can have his old ass- easier for us to lock them down this year

I sampled the entirety of his last three seasons to show his productivity at this point in time.

Actually I erred.  That season was 4 years ago.  I forgot that he got injured and had to miss the following season.   And it was obviously an outlier and you're not really "in your prime" at at 34 when you're a TE.

As for his production that past 2 years compared to the Bills' TE's, big deal.  At his age things are trending downward.  I'd rather see what the younger guys can do.
