If he dated subordinates in consensual relationships, but failed to disclose it to the owners in violation of company policy (and perhaps used personal email accounts to correspond with his partners, which could be the "other stuff"), it's fairly common activity and possibly not all that reprehensible. I feel really sorry for him if he exercised bad professional judgment. Having done the same thing...I can't criticize only tell him to not hide from this or deny it if it happened. You don't know if they are unwanted, or otherwise, until after you've made the advance.
