Bills sign Trent Murphy

The scouting report that you posted describes him perfectly. He is not a great athlete but he is maximum effort player that when the film is broken down shows that he played well and responsibly. When watching a game he doesn't draw much attention because he lacks the explosiveness and flash. Without question he is the type of people and players the wrestling coach wants on his roster. I'm ecstatic.

Good 3 cone and solid vert. He isnt von miller but has good measurables.

What?  Hughes had an excellent year.

There are fans who are against picking Darnold or Rosen because Rob Johnson was from California. So I'm not surprised some fans cant get over 1 season, 3 years ago, where he had a few bad penalties called on him (even though a couple of them were complete BS, like when he got flagged for patting his own teammate on the helmet).

This does NOT mean Lawson or Hughes is on the way out (although the way things are going, never say never).  A few years ago the Bills were so stocked with D linemen they could roll out two complete four-man lines without much change in performance.  Guys got old (Mario), guys left for FA (Branch), guys got rich and then lazy (Dareus).  Whatever the reason, the Bills need a massive rebuild.  This seems like a good signing at a reasonable price.

To answer the questions that have followed my tweet about Jerry Hughes staying put with Trent Murphy addition, the same goes for Shaq Lawson. #Bills want as much DE depth as possible.

Well there goes my trade idea. Bills front 7 is a LB and DT away from being pretty good.

My son, a big Redskins fan, just sent me a message: "He's a bum and is always getting busted for steroids or getting injured."  I assume Beane knows what he's doing on this one.

Perhaps the Bills have decided to not spend money on what's left of the FA quarterback crop and will draft two quarterbacks, another Redskins thing.  To those who say it will take two first round picks to move way up, why not have one of them be next year's first?

Before his ACL/MCL injury, he played in all but one game in three years.

@Yardsperpass put up some clips of him getting around the edge. He isn't going to be Von Miller flying off the edge, but looks like he can get around OT's with some speed and has decent hand usage.

They desperately needed help at DE, so i'm happy they're doing something.

I don’t remember ever watching the guy play. I just assumed that scouting report would accurately describe him.

He's the type of guy whose best description is that he is a "football player." He's the antithesis of Dareus. You don't have to worry about him because he is the self-motivated type. If there is a problem it would be more due to working too hard to the point of exhaustion and obsession. He's a terrific pickup.

Scouting Report: He’s a blue collar player, with a good motor. Murphy is relentless in pursuit. What he lacks in athleticism he makes up for in effort. He brings his lunch pail to work everyday. He’s a smart player that is the 1st guy in and the last to leave.

Not a high motor - only good???  Also missing a hard hat??  WTF   Bills overpaid.  So done with this team

I was just about to post these same exact words. Once I read blue collar and lunchpail Kelsay came to mind

Kelsay's best year was 5.5 sacks (2006).    Murphy could/should be much better than that, if not used in a rotational role...

I do like Stanford dlineman.

9 sacks in 2016 is nothing to laugh about. We are definitely buying low on this guy. Similar to our approach in FA last year.

I bet we draft Harrison Phillips DT, Stanford this year.

Way to much money for Murphy.Between him and Kyle..that's 13 million. Not good.

Keep in mind Kyle is for one year and we could get a rookie this year or next year who will take over for Kyle at some point and have that contract versus a fat vet contract.

Trent Murphy was suspended first four games of 2017 for testing positive to PED's -- which Murphy claims was related to a generic supplement he was taking and has since switched to a more common type. He said he couldn't even pronounce the substance that he was busted for....

Quote

The 6-foot-5, 290-pound Murphy explained that his suspension stemmed from the use of what he believes was a tainted supplement. Murphy said he couldn’t even pronounce the name of the banned substance that was found in his system, but he got rid of all of his supplements and has since switched to a brand that is more closely monitored.

Also -- (from a different article) I found this interesting speaking about his 2016 season. I wonder if the PED's were related to his rapid weight gain/loss...

Quote

The Redskins decided to switch him to defensive end at the start of last offseason ahead of his third season. Murphy gained nearly 30 pounds as part of the adjustment to his new role during offseason practices. The team lacked depth at outside linebacker, however, after Junior Galette tore his Achilles’ tendon for the second straight year and was placed on the non-football injury list before the team reported to Richmond. With a roster relying mainly on Kerrigan and Smith at the position, the Redskins decided to switch Murphy back to outside linebacker during training camp.

It forced Murphy to cut the weight he had gained in anticipation of playing defensive end, but he was still able to produce his most productive season in the NFL under then-position coach Greg Manusky, who was promoted to defensive coordinator this offseason.

Super twitchy edge rusher with good size.

A signing with upside who should give us some speed off the edge that Lawson hasn't provided.

You said he was twitchy. Does he adhd like marcel Darius?

I'm not worried about next year..we'll be under by about 90 million...we are tapped now.

If Hughes and Lawson AREN'T on their way out....................

I guess the Bills plan is have 20 DE's this year.

Aren't they supposedly moving Alexander back to an exclusive pass rushing role? If so, it gets really complicated then.

Stop with the Kelsay comparison, you guys are making yourselves look bad. Murphy was the top performer at the combine for 3 cone drill and is a much better pass rusher. In college Kelsay had 13 TOTAL sacks in 43 games while Murphy led the country with 15 his senior year.

Kelsay never had more than 5.5 sacks in a year, Murphy had 9 his 3rd year.

At least say Schobel if you're going to be that lazy about it.

Is he a DE or outside LB in a 4-3. My guess Alexander is gone and he plays linebacker with Bradham soon outside. Lawson and Hughes still the DE's.

Umm Bradham is re-signing with Philly so Murphy won't be playing with him anytime soon.
