Topic of the day 6/27: What is your worst game day memory?

Recommended Posts

Ok, we often recall the best moments. Now, revisit your worst game day memory. Whether it was at the stadium or at home watching (listening) a game tell us about your agony.

Just to take the obvious ones off the board - you can't say:

- Wide right

- Any of the other SB losses

- The music city forward pass

Anything else is fair game....

The loss to Denver (2007 opener?) for two reasons -- Kevin Everett paralyzed, and the Broncos won on a last second FG when they didn't have a TO but were still able to get the FG team onto the field.

I was at the game...nobody felt good afterwards.

October 11, 2009 Browns 6, Bills 3

Winning QB Derek Anderson 2-17 23 yds

9 false start penalties by the Bills

I was at that debacle. It is the worst professional game I ever saw in person or on TV. It was bad play by both teams and there were not any comical plays that at least you could laugh at. Plus the weather was not bad: no rain, upper 40s, and occasional wind gusts.

10/8/2007 The Bills play the Cowboys on Monday night in Buffalo. At the time I lived in Dallas. I watched the game on TV. You could literally feel the drunken electricity from the Buffalo crowd through the TV - it was a thing to behold. The Boys score 9 points in the final 20 seconds due to an on sides kick recovery and field goal. The Bills truly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory that night.

What a letdown....

Opener against Jax in 2004. GW TD force out as time expired. This came a few plays after Jimmy smith converted a 4th and like 20.

I recall it because my shouts of anger woke my newborn nephew, and so I felt especially bad.

By the way, London game last year gets honorable mention, given the early time and streaming aspects to it.

This one. And not just because I saw it coming a mile away (that's easy with the Bills). It's because Jauron, the same guy who never met a FG opportunity he wouldn't take, choose to have his rookie QB throw into the end zone (and picked, naturally) late in the 4th quarter with a 8 point lead when an 11 point lead at that stage would have almost clinched the game.

Showing up for the first pre-season game at Rich Stadium in 1973, a little late due to traffic, and hearing the rising anticipation from inside the stadium as we made our way into the entry line. First game out of the Rockpile. We were playing the Redskins, and Herb Mul-Key quickly hushed the crowd returning the opening kick off for a TD. I feel ill just thinking about it....

Was there too. Totally agree. Other than the obvious big losses, this one was the first game that popped into my head. Exact same reasons.

Ed Rutkowski playing QB.

Ha! Granted, the Run for the Bus Season finale @ Houston left a sour taste -but we landed OJ! Otherwise, I thought Eddie was heroic! Of course we were terrible and very likely the most desperate time in team franchise, but Eddie stepped up the best he could.

Think of all the QB's we went through that season. Jack Kemp, Tom Flores, Dan Darragh, Kay Stephenson, Sam Wyche. Heck even original #32 Gary McDermott threw a few passes. Despite all this, we tied Miami, narrowly lost to Oakland, @ Jets and Denver and BEAT THE SB Champs Jets.

The traffic that night was horrendous. If we weren't there a few hours early, we would have missed it too. 'Skins drubbed us, but we won the regular Season Home Opener vs the Jets 9-7 to launch Rich Stadium. OJ and John Leypolt providing all the O. So there's that..

Mckelvin fumbles the kickoff in the last 2 minutes against NE in the Monday night opener.

First one that came to my mind ^^^

Other one was Bryce Brown end zone fumble vs KC 2014

A couple of people have mentioned the Stevie drop against Pittsburgh...it's funny, but that's not even close on my list because the Bills stunk and it was a meaningless game. I was so happy that afternoon because they were even in the ballgame at all.

I was at the Browns Monday night game circa 2008 where Trentative threw three picks in the first quarter. We came all the way back, and Lindell missed the kick to win it.

Fans just sat in their seats with looks of despair LONG after the game ended.

After that game, I recall there was a mass exodus from here with a ton of "I am done" threads.

For me it was on Sunday, October 26th, 1980... a Pats* game that The Bills won at home 31-13.

It burned in me a hatred for The Pats that I still hold today.

Sounds like an oxymoron doesn't it? Well, it isn't.

And, no. No betting was involved.

Same here. I was at the game and it was a terrible day.

Comforting to known that KE recovered from this.

I will go with some older ones that maybe not top of my list, but ones that may not be brought up

1) Loss to Tampa Bay in 82 on Rosie Leaks fumble. 9 game season, 16 teams make playoffs. Bills go into this game with the hapless Bucs at 4-2 in massive control of their own destiny, lose on Rosie's fumble, and my brother and i just knew we were done.

Two more road losses, one at Miami then at the Pats in front of like 20K fans...and good bye Chuck Knox, hello Kay Stephenson!!!! hello back to back 2-14...all cause of one freaking fumble.

2) Loss to Cinci in the playoffs getting delay of game after taking a timout and converting a 4th down to Lou Piccone.

1. That season still hurts. Cribbs left for the USFL and a young, great team died that year.

2. Didn't Fergy have a pass deflect off someone's helmet in the endzone on our last ditch play?

First Super Bowl... I was an army lieutenant serving in Desert Storm somewhere in the middle of the Arabian Desert. I had no access to TV or radio broadcasts of the game and the game was going to be played in the middle of the night, local time.

So I went to sleep on my cot as usual but told the young Specialist on radio watch to wake me up if he heard a Super Bowl score. At maybe 3am he did. "The Bills won!" he yelled excitedly.

"Really?" I said anxiously.

"Yeah! At least I think so. I picked up something from the BBC but there was a lot of static. It sounded like Buffalo won on a last minute field goal."

So I spent the next few hours thoroughly scouring the radio waves looking for news from the BBC or VOA, hoping for confirmation.

When I learned the truth after all my frantic, hopeful radio searching, I was crushed.

And what became of the person on radio watch?

This is great history.

Despite being a soldier, I am not a violent man. But that day I really wanted to beat him to bloody pulp to release all my frustrations and disappointments.

He was a good soldier & man and spent the next three days apologizing to me. And my response evolved from "How could you make such a monumental effing mistake like that?!?!?!" to "No worries. It wasn't your fault."

Does anyone remember the home game vs the Pat's when we had bledsoe? We were driving down the field late in the game to take a lead. Then bledsoe gets strip sacked and richard Seymour runs down the field 70 yards to win the game for the Pat's.

Then there's the Sunday night at the Pat's maybe 2005 or 2006. We had a 16 point lead after halftime and slowly blew it.

Then theres the jp losman fumble against the jets

Also that KC Sunday night game where we scored the first 5 points of the game and ended up losing like 47-5. Priest holmes was good

I was at this game. Truly awful football.

When Tuel threw the pick 6 against the chiefs. he had actually played pretty well up to that point and I thought they had a chance despite everything else. But as he got farther down the field, the place got so quiet.

Last years against the Pats, I actually won tickets from the Bills smack dab in the middle of about 100 patriot* "fans". My girlfriends grandmother had been on her deathbed all weekend and we decided to go to the game just to get her mind off it. Game got ugly, everyone was taunting us including some drunk Canadian dude in jean short that got in my girlfriends face after she said to me "Wow he's really drunk.". We finally decided to move and the Bills started coming back, then lost. So as we were walking to the car, my girlfriends sister called me to tell me her grandmother had passed. I never fault worse after a game in my life.

We went back to the grandparents house in Rochester and I showed up in a Bills garb without a voice as everyone is giving hugs and crying. I just felt so out of place and like a real jerk. Later that night I got a speeding ticket as i just wanted to get home and be done with that day

Not a great day

I'm nominating Hindsight as the "winner" of this thread, anyone want to second the motion?

Haven't been to many games but other than guys pissing in the sinks not much. It wasn't bad for me but I saw a guy sitting on a fire hydrant pissing himself drunk and then getting up and looking at the hydrant to see where all the water was coming from  . I actually thought it was leaking too because nobody could pee that long guess we were both wrong lol.
