It probably has something to do with or a lot to do with, Sanders, Davis, Stevenson, Kumerow. They will just run more 4-5 wide instead of three. Hollister is no inline TE. If he’s going to be split we’re better off having a WR out there. This is the first thing I've read that makes me at least understand the move. Thank you. Still nervous about Knox catching passes.

I’m a huge supporter of Brandon Beane but the move to keep Tommy Sweeney over Hollister is a move I don’t understand. I’m guessing they went with the better blocker in Sweeney but I do feel that Hollister’s skills gives the offense a quick threat that can get open downfield better than Knox. I would not be shocked to see Hollister making some clutch catches this reason. I think this move is a mistake 3

BuffaloRebound
This reminds me of the Edmunds debate. Thumping MLB’s don’t exist anymore. Bills seem to have decided that unless you have a Waller, Gronk, Kittle, or Kelce, it’s better to get an extra WR on the field than a mediocre Tight End. We’ll see if they’re right. 1

The other side of this argument is for an offense built around passing you shouldn't make a TE decision based on their blocking ability. An athletic TE with good hands is a good fit for that offense. A TE with drop problems that you use for run blocking is not. I have no problem with the Bills running single TE sets all year long. I just don't agree that Knox should be handed the job or that Sweeney should be kept over Hollister because he's a slightly better blocker.

When you run an inline TE the defense has to adjust usually an extra LB v DB. You can then run or pass out of that formation. Or use them as wingbacks. Hollister almost always would be split wide. They sometimes used him as a H-back type but I think Kumerow is as good a blocker. You don't use him the same way you would use Knox or Sweeney who do both inline and split out. Sweeney is not a son quick or athletic as Hollister but he allows you to do a lot more.
Turk71
One of the worst te groups in the league for sure. I do think the Bills will play a lot 4 wide formations and I guess having a decent pass catching te is just not considered important in their offense. Turk71
Hollister started for the Seahawks weeks 7-17 in 2019 and was 12th in the league among tes in fantasy points for that period, he averaged 6 targets per game catching 70% of them.
BigAl2526
I think a collection of factors led to Hollister being released: 1. Sweeney was close to being healthy (practiced today) and gives Buffalo a more rounded TE than Hollister. Sweeney can block. 2. Reggie Gilliam can contribute in multiple TE sets when Buffalo wants to use him there. I understand he practiced as a tight end today. 3. Jake Kumerow can do a lot of the things a receiving TE can do. 4. Buffalo decided to go a little heavier on the OL and receiver position, though Stevenson was sent to the IR (available to return) 1

Not like he’s thought of as a stud around the league. Maybe not even worthy of any 53 although I think eventually he will sign with someone. He was undrafted. The Pats traded him for a 7th round pick. He was released by Seahawks then re-signed to PS before making roster halfway through season. He was literally carried off the field by his Seahawks teammates; so his teammates appear to think of him highly. 3 hours ago, Kelly the Dog said: Edited September 2, 2021 by OrediggerPoke

QCity
If you told me last Spring that the team would sustain no major injuries to key players this offseason and the biggest controversy about the 53-man roster is that we cut our 3rd string TE, I would have said you're dreaming and your expectations are set way too high.

Hollister is a proven pass catcher on the pro level. Sweeney is not. He's not had much of a chance due to injury. Frankly, we don't know how good he is or isn't. Sweeney is a better blocker. Yes, Gilliam is short. He's also been little used in Buffalo's offense thus far. Of course, he played his college career as a tight end, so he knows the position. He's also very athletic. While he's been little used in the offense thus far, the Bills have seen lots of plays in practice and probably have a better grasp of his potential. Kumerow doesn't have tight end body mass, but he certainly has tight end height and reach. He has great hands and wins one on one battles with DBs. No, Kumerow is not going to run through linebackers, but there are going to be lots of occasions where he could serve as a safety valve in a similar manner to a tight end. At this point, nobody knows why the Bills chose to cut bait with Hollister, but the fact is they did, and they had some reason for doing so.. I expressed an opinion. You have a perfect right to a different one. Edited September 2, 2021 by BigAl2526
