BR worst free agent signing of 2020

They actually list Mario Addison as worst which I think is dumb but I will admit we overpaid for him by a large amount, apparently 14 million for that one year of average DE play. The good news is we can cut him and get some salary cap room but I see the other contracts and am glad we did not get Beasley or Hooper

That's ridiculous to list him first.  First of all, the Bills can part ways with him this year for a $4M cap hit.  Second they disagree with Overthecap on the guarantees, with B/R saying $15.25 ("more than half") of the contract guaranteed while OTC basically says we're free of guaranteed money after what was paid out last year, $13.25M ($4M signing bonus still on the books).

Second, while he didn't contribute as the Bills had hoped, he did play in 15 games + 3 playoffs and contribute 6 sacks, 9 QB hits, 4 passes defensed, a forced fumble, and 40 tackles.

That's actually better production than Beasley, Fowler, Clowney etc.

Still, not a good signing for Beane.  Hope he treats it as sunk cost and releases/restructures.

Kinda silly. Basically every edge and defensive line player busted from free agency last offseason. Lawson and Phillips included.
Addison at least had some production vs all the guys who had almost none or ended up hurt non stop.

Beasley getting cut mid season would make him higher on my list.

This is so wrong on top of wrong, I don't even know where to start.  I think HBF said it the best.

Guy will be 34 next year. There was no need to sign him to a deal like they did.

Yup-obsession with ex Panthers stings on this one.  A fine player to add for much cheaper- doubt any other team in the NFL would have offered a contract like this

Thanks. Despite watching every game, those are better numbers than I would have guessed. Facts can matter.

Completely agree, I think it was more for the surprise factor to not put clowney or hooper first as probably most people thought they would be.

I hated the Addison signing basically from day 1. Watching him with Carolina in 2019 I saw a clearly declining player and that same player was on the field in Buffalo in 2020. But the worst free agent signing in the whole NFL? I struggle to see it as that. One of Beane's worst moves as Bills GM I could get on board with.

The problem guys is sitting in Beane’s seat.  He did not value J. Phillips and Shaq’s at what AZ and Miami did so he was in a bind.  He has his colleague and friend McD in his ear, we need a pass rusher and now.  They went to a guy who was avg. 9.5 sacks a year for the last four years and they knew him.

It’s easy in retrospect to say this was a mistake, and maybe they should’ve kept Phillips, but Phillips didn’t exactly have a banner year in 2020 with 2 sacks.

Addision wasn't a tragic signing. But they overpaid for alright production and are looking at eating 4 million to get rid of his 10 million dollar cap hit. Or they will have to ask him to take a pay cut to be a rotational/depth DE.

The reason I was so against it was the opportunity cost. If he is cut they will have paid him just a shade under $14m for one year of mediocre production. That might be the difference now between being able to add a difference maker or not. And he was clearly on the decline in 2019. I said it until I was blue in the face but his sack number was a mirage to some extent. It was unsustainable production from so few pass rush wins. I will now doubt get the "Beane and McDermott obviously disagreed and they know more than you" response. Sure. They know more than me. It doesn't mean they get everything right. My view is that they likely saw the drop in performance in 2019 and attributed it to the Panthers switching to a 3-4 in Rivera's final year and believed that back in a 4-3 they would be able to get him back to his best form. Sadly it didn't work.

I do not think it is silly.  I think the NFL decided to let a lot more go in terms of offensive holding this season which really hurt pass rushers overall and a certain style of pass rusher more than others.  Teams just didn’t know what was coming when they signed these rushers.  That said, giving that much guaranteed money to Addison at his age was not a good move.  That cap space might cost us a free agent this season.

I wonder how many on this board would gladly take Jimmy Graham's production at Jimmy Graham's contract for a vet tight end option (Ertz, Rudolph, etc.).

2 years/$16 million

456 yards, 8 TDs

Sounds like Charles Clay, without the TD's.....

He was pretty nonexistent and should be let go, regardless of dead cap.  I thought he was a detriment

Addison was only noticed when he tried to collapse in on Kyler Murray vs keeping containment on the edge. We all know how that ended.
