He may be best remembered as dying at a way too yound age of 42 in a plane crash but I'll remember him for something different.

The guy dressed in NFL related garb on the golf course. Here he is pictured blasting out of the sand wearing Bills gear.

One of a kind.....or, were there other in the entertainment/sports world?

There was a time when he was known for choking in the majors, and it didn't go unnoticed that he wore Bills' gear.  Fortunately, he finally won that Master's and got the yoke off his neck.  He was a great personality, and it was very sad that he left this earth too soon...

Just a point of fact correction.  Payne never won the Masters.  He won I believe 2 PGAs and 2 US Opens; the Open he win at Pinehurst with the 15 foot putt on 18 was just months before his death.

Yes, it was the US Open on Father's DAy beating Mickelson, yes?  Thanks for that.

How is this Bills related? He wore any NFL team colors, dependent on the proximity of the closest franchise.

I am sorry the way his life ended though......

I don't know....maybe because he wore Bills and other NFL gear while playing in a major sport?

He did it for money and recognition (which equates to money).  I have ZERO problem with that. I used to live on the Harbour Town course in Hilton Head, SC and he was one of the “cool guys” back then. Very sad that he was lost so soon.

Not sure if this fits your narrative but the first guy that popped into my head was post-Detroit Pistons Dennis Rodman rocking all the different hair colors and his "exotic" personality.  Biggest character in professional sports history in my opinion.

I was kind of thinking about athletes sporting gear of other professional teams.

I remember Islanders great, Billy Smith, used to wear a NY Jets sticker in the back of his helmet/cage.

pretty interesting. I didn’t realize Stewart wore football stuff. When I just looked it up on wiki, looks like he had a NFL sponsorship, which is why he wore that NFL gear.

Out of curiosity, what got you thinking of Stewart all of a sudden? The Tiger crash?

Yeah. I was thinking about when Tiger was a young guy on the tour and Stewart popped into my head and I remembered his NFL outfits.

He would wear the NFL gear of the closest team to where he was playing.  Likely was wearing Bills gear when they were playing at Oak Hill in Rochester.  Don't believe there's any PGA events in Buffalo so would assume that's the closest??

Saw the "Air Disasters" on this.  Turned out the fresh air valve on the plane malfunctioned.  The pilots would have had about 10-15 seconds to get on supplemental oxygen before motor and cognitive impairment due to hypoxia.  Luckily the plane crashed in an empty field.  A true tragedy.

It was a sad, sickening, horrifying day.  The entire (interested) world watched/listened to it unfold as it happened.  Heavy, to say the least.

He was always one of my favorites.  RIP.

I wondered that day if they would shoot it down if near populated areas. RIP Payne

Not totally related, but: Isn’t Shaq a Bills fan? I’m not 100%, but I feel like on MTV cribs years ago he had a room in his house dedicated to the Bills

Not sure but I know NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick is.

This is an NFL board with a Bills focus. Not everything has to 100% pertain to the Bills.

Now you have been educated.

I lived in Orlando in the 90s and saw Payne about town a few times at the supermarket, post office and saw him play @ Bay Hill a few times. Also was lucky enough to be at the 1999 Ryder Cup for the big comeback on Sunday and when Payne was so gracious to Colin Montgomerie.

This is complete speculation on my part but if this is even true about him having a room dedicated to the Bills it might have something to do with the 90s era Bills in particular because that was around the time he was coming up.  I would have to say Shaq is not a true Bills fan because I feel like we would hear way more about it but he might have a fondness for the Jim Kelly/Bruce Smith/Thurman Thomas days...he might even know some of them personally but like I said I'm just 100 percent speculating.  I don't remember ever hearing this story.

Some golfers like Mcllroy, Thomas and other players at the tournament today will be dressing either like Tiger Woods today, or using some similar theme or logos to show respect/love for him, and hoping he gets well. As for players who passed away too early, near the end of their great careers, Thurman Munson, who died in a plane crash too.

I remembered this is a Sportscenter Kid, but never heard the details., but remember being bummed out.  Hopefully that was an easier way to go than living through it awake

Sometimes when I'm channel surfing, I get sucked into this show...and always sorry I did.  Often times just the stupidest little thing, either mechanical or pilot error, brings these jets down.  It's almost enough to quit flying.
